This is a great series. The English is horrible. But, you can change it to Italian, French etc. Likewise the subtitles. This is the saga of a family that has a lot of ups and downs. At times it's frustrating to watch. But a great series.

All the reviews that talk about the language thing have not tried to change the language. There are options. I like the series and do not understand how the complainers never thought to look. You don't like something and never look to see if you can change it? Seriously?

I hope that they choose to do more with it. I would love to see another part of this saga.

Love the series, hate the audio!

Loving this series, but the forced English voiceover is just horrible. I enjoy watching international series in their original audio and hate that I have no choice to change it. And the music is awful too, it just doesn't match up with the era. Hated that about Peaky Blinders as well. These issues are why I can only give it 8 stars. That being said, the story and actors are great! Would've given it an easy 10 if not for my previous complaints. Reading other reviews makes me feel better that I'm not alone and exaggerating.

I also don't appreciate being forced to write a 600 review on here, so it will be my last. Happy New Year to all!

In Italian with English subtitles

If you would like to watch it in Italian with English subtitles you have to click to watch on the I Lioni di Sicilia, if you click on the The Lions of Sicily then it will be dubbed in English and it pretty awful to hear. I speak Italian so Im glad to see it in the original language.

I am writing this because some of the reviewers here have mentioned how horrible the dubbed version is, and it seems enough of you don't know how to get it in the spoken language without dubbing, which can be viewed of course with the english subtitles. I hope to have helped some of you.

Enjoy it in Sicilian, I love hearing it.

Interesting but very flawed

The history is interesting, a story of the birth of a family empire. They're a family with a hunger for success and social climbing. The series itself embodies the impatience to get to the success part. About 2 or 3 decades go by and before you know it you say goodbye to what you thought were the main characters. I mean history is history but there's a certain amount of impatience in getting through it all when we'd probably appreciate getting to know these peoples lives, there real day to day, their relationship to others in the community. My Brilliant Friend is a great example. Each season dedicated to a period in their lives. In this series it's mildly fleshed out signposted events. On top of that what's more impatient than the director is the music editor. The music has more urgency and no subtlety. This is a production that called for a beautiful, sensitive classical score. Instead what we have is low rent scores mixed with English speaking contemporary music and it just doesn't work. So many good scenes ruined by the terrible soundtrack. It's other flaws could have been more forgiven if the music wasn't so bad and intrusive.

disappointing!

This is awful, an Italian production that isnt in Italian, it is dubbed! So I for one wont watch it which is a shame, I have read the book and it s a great story but not if its dubbed! Hulu has other great productions that are in the original language, among them Italian ones so why not this one too, at least give the viewers a choice. Americans are used to seeing foreign films in the. Original language, dubbing the film loses a lot, please reconsider and put any film in its original language. Viewers are intelligent and can read subtitles, much of Disney plus gives one the chance of seeing in the original language and Hulu should do the same! I am really disappointed.

A slight disappointment

Based on the book by Stefania Auci that recounts the rise of one of the most influential families of the Italian medidione from their arrival in Sicily in the late 1700s to the Unification of Italy, the series is a bet gone wrong. Despite the enormous production effort and a very interesting cast, among which Michele Riondino stands out, the story fails precisely in portraying the characters, who are monolithic and lacking depth.

The richness of Sicily is well represented by the magnificent palaces, but the exteriors, thanks also to a gloomy cinematography, do not do justice to Palermo, where it seems that there is only Piazza Pretoria, and a port awkwardly recreated by rather approximate VFX.

I apprecciated it

As a Sicilian I am very happy that for once they try to do a series that does not talk about the mafia and the bad things that has this territory. Here instead they try to give prestige to the most illustrious family of Sicily that has done so much good for Sicily and Sicilians by giving work to many families. I liked the actors, even if they are not all Sicilians have learned Sicilian well and have made the product very credible. I liked the shooting and I recognized almost all the places, on the other hand the sicily is beautiful and the shooting at the port were made in cefalù a fantastic village near palermo. I hope so much that they will make the second season that will talk about the Targa Florio the oldest motorist race in the world, and that passes by my village.

Loved it!

I love it! Took me back to my roots (: Switch the language to Italian, far more authentic experience then. The story is amazing, the acting, the locations, the costumes, the history, the family dynamic, everything just sat right with me. It felt familiar, and I was never once bored while watching it. I really do enjoy a good period drama, and I do hop, that they will make another season!

The music is also worth mentioning! Really good. The only thing I could have needed is more closed ending, it's very abrupt and open in some ways, and ur left with a lot of questions and speculations. Of course that intrigues a lot of people, and it sure spikes my interest in watching more, and hoping for another season (;

I dont dare spell the word of that island down there in the mediterranian sea, so lets call it sissyli...no pun intended by all means...

but this italian television series, is one of the best ive seen ever ( and i found it all by myself), most of all due to the historical content and journey , but also due to an amazing cast, that acts and they parlare italiano like youre in the operahouse. Fantastic, search me...

so if youre on the lookout for a good tv serie to binge or wait for,my warmest recommends goes to ''the lions of sicily'', because it snatched me by surprise, cause it has all the elements you demand for a family saga, in love and awe, in sickness and health until eternal death...

the grumpy old man cant wait, cause i want more, ''i want it all''

There is now an option, watch in Italian! Look at the top of the screen. Subtitles on, audio Italian.

Original post follows, but no longer holds true. I will watch the series then amend it.

Had been looking forward to this but sadly dubbed in English, and refuse to watch anything not using the original language. The timbre, temper of foreign film and television is its original language. Language is our most precious and unique way of expression. It is why imperial powers throughout centuries have forbidden people to speak in their own languages, stripping places and their native peoples of identity. Until Disney and Hulu take their heads out of their accounting books and allow users to listen to what appears to be an exciting epic series .

Dubbing is horrible

I'm not sure I have 600 words worth of this to expound on, but, for those of you, so condescendingly suggesting to poor, stupid us, that we just look in the upper right hand corner and find the language options let me just say: if you are watching this on Hulu, there ARE NO options. There is only English Audio and English Sub-titles. So poor, stupid you don't actually know what you're talking about, do you.

I, for one, would love to watch at least enough of this to determine whether or not I want to watch it all. But my access is through Hulu and, thanks to a necessary wordiness requirement, I'm pleased to state I cannot because the Hulu version offers only horrible dubbed English.

Flawed but interesting

Interesting series although somewhat melodramatic at times and the characters come across as somewhat one dimensional. It has the misfortune to have one of the worst soundtracks that made me put it on mute at times to avoid listening to. During a crucial scene you'll start hearing an English soft rock song that is way off the mark. On the plus side it's a story set in a time and place of Scilly in the 1800's that's not well covered. Despite the flaws just enough interest to keep watching it through to the end but definitely could have been better with improved characterization and a totally different soundtrack.
