Sadie says Sophocles wrote the part of Jocasta, in Oedipus Rex, for her. Dating from about 400 B.C., in this play Oedipus, who didn't know anything about his parentage, killed a total stranger his king father, married the grieving widow queen his mother Jocasta, fathered several brother sons, and searched for the vile murderer of the previous king (it was him all along). When everyone learns the truth Jocasta hangs herself and Oedipus gouges out his eyeballs and wanders off. This play is deemed the greatest of the Greek tragedies. Child mutilation and abandonment, pointless murder, incest, inbreeding, suicide, self mutilation; the stuff of great literature.
