Darrell Van Citters is a genius
kobe8915 August 2012
This film is just awesome and so original! I was shocked nobody had come up with the idea of a 'Kung Fu Panda' before.. the ONLY thing that brought the stars from 10/10 down to 1/10 was the monkey.. he didn't say a word throughout the entire film.. What a let down! I love monkeys and hearing them talk in cartoons usually brings tears of joy to my eyes.

Saying that, everything else was perfect. A panda doing kung fu.. it's the kind of thing Pixar should be doing! It's obviously made on a tramp's shoestring, so to have made a 40 minute film that only sent me to sleep twice, it's just fantastic. Two thumbs up!! - but again, was disappointed about the mute monkey.

good animation but it is a copy of kung fu panda
FilmMan4720 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
if you are into animated films you know that kung fu panda didn't started the trend of fighting cartoons and all that it was was before that since 1970s.as a kid of 90s i have seen enough cartoons and animie films is still love cartoons now that i am into new films its 2013 mostly i am a action & romance film lover.but that doesn't keep me away from cartoons.

chop kick panda is another film that shamelessly copied kung fu panda but the animation was good enough with some comedy to keep you glued but at the end its not original.the same story is copied here what was the reason these people made this

the kung fu panda franchise has proved itself that its the best.this was real bad i tell you.enough said my rating is 2/10

Copy and paste, crap
maxinerouge4 March 2016
This film tells the story about "a fat lazy Panda named Zibo who wants to be a master of martial arts, but is stuck as a mere cleaner for a training place of martial arts. And there is an evil tiger has plans to take over the kingdom, so Zibo must stop the tiger." See? Is this a pseudo-remake or something like that? They took nearly everything from Kung Fu Panda and changed the title to a very dull name: "Chop Kick Panda".

Surprise! The screenplay is not totally same with Kung Fu Panda. It's way way way worse than this. I wish it had the same.

If there were a half star, it completely deserves it. 0,5/10.

It's bad enough for me to rant about it
dfgremnants4 April 2012
I am more offended by the fact that NF thought I would like this than I would be if a homeless man grabbed my privates on the train, announced that two of were to be married and then successfully argued in court that said proclamation constitutes a verbal contract. Furthermore, if I were to marry aforementioned bum and subsequently be cheated on multiple times by my forced same sex partner, I would still be less offended by that that I am by the fact that I would like this movie. If GOD himself came down to Earth and announced to the world that I am the creation he is least proud off (including Lucifer) and I am to walk the Earth for eternity for the expressed purpose of demonstrating to the rest of creation what happens when you have the misfortune of being a loathsome wretched creation so hideous that you are an affront o the creator, I would be less offend than I am by the fact that NG though I would like this.

In short avoid this movie.

Another take on Kung Fu Panda, not bad, not good
Horst_In_Translation2 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Chop Kick Panda" is a 36-minute animated movie from 2011, so it has its 5th anniversary this year. The director is the fairly experienced Darrell Van Citters and the writer is the not so experienced Robert Zappia. I am not familiar with any of the voice actors I must admit, but I guess most of you aren't either. It is a Canadian/American co-production, so the language is English and it is not one of these Brazilian Portuguese-languages rip-offs. But you can still call it a bit of a rip-off, not just because of the title, but also because of the characters and story a bit I guess. All in all, I would not say this was a watch as bad as the IMDb rating suggests as there are occasionally even funny moments and the plot was not entirely unoriginal either in my opinion. But also the story could have been a bit better. I am still glad they did not force-push it to the exact length of the KFP movies, which means for about another hour as then I may not have been this generous with my rating. It's not a disastrous watch. but there is also nothing that stands out from it. Thumbs-down from me overall and I don't recommend seeing this (relatively long) short film.

Better than The Little Panda Fighter, but that's not really a compliment
TheLittleSongbird9 July 2014
Chop Kick Panda is not a good movie at all, in fact it's very bad, but it is nowhere near as bad as The Little Panda Fighter(the first Kung Fu Panda rip-off) and is also better than any of Video Brinquedo's and Spark Plug Entertainment's output put together. The animation quality is nowhere near as awful, the characters anywhere near as annoying and it doesn't make as glaring a mistake of not knowing what the target audience is, though that mistake is still made. Chop Kick Panda does have some moderately amusing one-liners, a few vibrant colours and background art that certainly flows smoother than those of The Little Panda Fighter going for it. This said, the animation quality in general is neither good or terrible, as aforementioned it has its moments, but the character designs are very lazy, there is some blockiness and some of the colours are quite flat. The soundtrack at best is forgettable, and while the characters are not as annoying the movie make the opposite mistake and makes them completely personality-less apart from the occasional spark with Bali and character development is almost non-existent. This is made even worse in that the voice actors show little signs of trying. The script and especially the story fare the worst. The script thankfully does not take a disturbingly sadistic approach that was seen with Spark Plug Entertainment's A Car's Life, which was what was meant early on in the review but it is one script that neither children or adults will take much pleasure from. The type of humour will fly over children's heads and could be seen as too crude for them, but while not as juvenile as that of Little Panda Fighter or the rest of Video Brinquedo's output adults will find the jokes here randomly structured, forced and more insultingly stupid than funny. The story is literally a carbon copy of Kung Fu Panda- like with the opening- minus the fun, charm and heart, the lack of originality would be forgivable if the story was engaging. But engaging is the last word to sum up the story, structurally it is as thin as paper and scenes are stretched to try and hide this, meaning that ideas run out and the running time despite being short actually feels too long. Plus subplots(ie. the idea to have the panda as a single dad) are shoe-horned in that are placed so clumsily that you question why they were there at all. In conclusion, a very bad movie though never reaching into abysmal territory like The Little Panda Fighter did. 2/10 Bethany Cox

I was scared to put this in my DVD player
natblvd9 July 2016
I was a bit scared of what was going to be shown on my TV through my DVD player when I bought this roll of toilet paper at Giant for $3.99, but I was surprised that it wasn't that bad. All of the jokes were timed correctly and the animation was better than The Little Panda Fighter. DEFINITELY better.

One thing I have a problem with is that the back of the DVD case has the main character's name as Lu, when in the movie, his name is Zibo and in parentheses it has the words 'okay' and 'fat'.

The little monkey was very entertaining and should get his own spin-off movie or talk show or something like that, I would definitely watch it all the time.

All in all, it was meh. But it's still a Kung Fu Panda rip-off

The animation is good but it's a cheap knockoff.
toddreidbb1 July 2021
Honestly, this is one of those rare rip offs that have good animation and (mostly) decent acting. My main problem is that it's basically a copy, nothing original is only made for a cash grab.

Is It As Bad As You Think?
Darkraiclone26 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Well i have watched this movie from beginning to end and pretty much it took me by surprise, it wasn't good but it wasn't terrible either. Despite it being a Kung Fu Panda knock off it's actually pretty decent for what it is.

Seeing how most knock off movies try to add or take away from the movies they're ripping off, this movie tries to be somewhat original, even though the story is pretty much the same as Kung Fu Panda's story from start to finish you'll notice some differences in between the two there are some things in the story that work and some things that don't, basically the story is a mixed opinion type of review.

I also like the fact that they decided to use flash animation instead of using cheap CGI animation that's normally in most movie knock offs, still the animation ain't that great but it's one of those "It's not good but it could've been much worse" things that can be accepted by most viewers.

Half of the characters in the movie are bland and most of them have no personality outside of what their role in the movie is, for example the villains are just regular everyday villains, the heroes are just regular everyday heroes, and the kids are just regular everyday kids and that's pretty much it in a nutshell.

My verdict. even though the movie is not that good it's still just a harmless and decent family flick but it's more of a movie you should watch on Netflix or rent from your nearest video store, it's an OK movie but your not missing much.

Beautifully animated and exceptional storyline. I watched it with my wife for our date night and we have both now found a love for Pandas and Kung Fu. We are moving to China to open a dojo and take part in conservation for these beautiful creatures. This movie was inspiring!

Animation Is Wonderful

I loved this movie, the animation was just good as a cartoon on Nickelodeon. The character designs are very cool, and this film is better than The Little Panda Fighter, I would like to watch it every weekend.

One of the best mockbusters ever but still awful
thesterlingweaver11 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason I compliment because there is one positive to it, the animation, it's good and isn't terrible like almost any other mockbuster, but it's still very, very, VERY, boring, the whole movie is a janitor talking to kids about Kung Fu falsely, THATS LITERALLY ALL THAT HAPPENS, the movie, oddly enough, came out around the same time as Kung Fu Panda 2, the climax lasts 5 minutes and it's so predictable, the tiger who is a ripoff of oogways character LITERALLY STEALS LINES FROM STAR WARS AND SOMEHOW THATS LEGAL, none of the characters are likable, nothing about this movie is likable, overall, it's awful, but there is actually one positive, the animation.

I'm so happy that they found a great use of what tiny a budget they must have had, I'm guessing the budget was used for buying beet for a day at one of their beautiful Brazilloan beaches... hell.. hell, with all the beautiful women down there, why waste time in a stuffy old studio.

Could've been good if it wasn't plagiarism.
worldsworstwryter16 January 2022
If this wasn't a rip off movie, I actually would've rated it a bit higher, but it is definitely a rip off, and a really blatant one (more blatant than little panda fighter), so it shall stay at a measly 3.

Despite that, the animation and voice acting is fine, the monkey has a cute character design and the panther's VA was sometimes almost funny.

However, the typical rip off runtime of 40 minutes means that there are no real characters or plot in this because there's just no time to make a real story. As it is, it feels as though nothing actually happened for the 40 minutes, and then all of a sudden it was over and I was just left wondering if I'd had a 40 minute black out.

Overall it's technically adequate in some aspects, but the disgusting nature of ripping off someone else's creation means I can't support this.

To whoever made this, please try again, but with your own idea, and maybe you can make something worthwhile.

3.5/10.

Chop Kick Panda is such a ripoff.
This film was based on the DreamWorks show "Kung Fu Panda". I would rather get hit than watching this stupid movie. I hate this show so much that I never watched it, I just looked it up. I hated it because it is a knock-off of such an amazing film. It has to be removed. If imdb had half a star, I would rate it 0.5 stars.

Dumbest movie I have ever watched
banasanasizene5 September 2023
Fristly , sorry for bad English. It starts with po having 2 jobs as a janitor at the dojo and a childcare teacher . He has a child and no female counterpart. Movie really was trying to make me mad while little po really always all times blushing at weird female child tiger . I never even bothered to learn characters name , it was boring as hell . Also , all dojo-able characters is tigers . Something that when you born as a tiger you earn to be able to dojo . I hope more movies like these will be released in the future , because it was really testing my patience . I need that sometimes , y'know?

10/10 I love it!
guthriereed9 March 2020
When my mom told me about Chop Kick Panda when I was at the ripe age of eight, I wondered how anyone could ever make a movie like this interesting. But I gave it a try. Doing that was the best decision I ever made!! This movie is 39 original minutes of pure action! When there isn't action there is always perfect voice acting during the sad moments and so much comedy! Overall, this is probably my favorite movie, I have watched this original content 367 times! Definitely give it a watch!

So why do people hate this, again?
whateverbloob24 April 2024
Whenever you search the term "mockbuster" online, you are guaranteed to see numerous blog posts, countless YouTube reviews, and a myriad of meme reviews of the notorious Video Brinquedo and Spark Plug Entertainment's animated rip-offs. And for good reason. All of their movies have bland plots, insipid writing, ridiculous animation, and above all repulsive art-styles that immediately turn you away from them.

Then there's Chop Kick Panda. People are almost eager to lump it in with the likes of Ratatoing, A Car's Life, and Plan Bee. Just look at all of the reviews and reaction videos about this being a super-bad and abysmal movie. Others may have been introduced to this by I Hate Everything's "Not DreamWorks Collection" video, where it was decided that it was just a super-mediocre Flash cartoon instead. Whether you just watched videos of some YouTuber ranting about it or hate-watched it yourself, you'll probably come to the conclusion that this is just a so-so children's comedy similar to Johnny Test or something, complete with lazy animation and banal writing.

Thing is, Chop Kick Panda isn't any of these things. In fact, the writing is closer to an episode of Animaniacs or Rocky and Bullwinkle than anything else. So why all the hyperbolic hate or exasperated sighs? I have a theory, but I'll present it after the review.

STORY & WRITING:

The story of the movie is unsurprisingly simple and admittedly derivative of Kung Fu Panda (Renegade Animation was contracted by Gaiam to create a mockbuster, after all), with an incompetent panda wanting to prove himself as a mighty warrior in addition to a macguffin with supposedly limitless power and a blank document. Getting past that, however, is all just superficial similarities. It's a basic "dad lies to his son because he's embarrassed of his job, but ends up proving himself in the end" sort of deal. And you know what? It works.

People may be disappointed that the movie doesn't even attempt at having a grander story but at the end of a day, it's a comedy movie and most comedies intentionally have simple plots so they can focus on the jokes. And as luck would have it, the humor is this movie's best asset.

If I had to describe this movie's comedy, I'd say it's very reminiscent of a Jay Ward cartoon; a lot of quick wordplay, snarky dialogue, and in general having a self-aware, witty tone to it. This is primarily seen through the characters Bali and Slade, who have some great scenes together where the latter is trying his damndest to work with the former's brand of navel-gazing stupidity, but truthfully almost every scene has some gems ("Shouldn't you be in the gifted class?"). Still, Bali alone just might have one of the best jokes in the entire movie: "Why'd I ever leave jolly old England? The pubs, the royal palaces, the White Cliffs of Dover... the pubs."

One criticism I do have, though, is that the movie gets very exposition-heavy towards the middle, which slows things down significantly. Though the same smart writing is present throughout the movie, the middle is pretty boring because Zibo is honestly not that strong of a protagonist to carry it alone. I do have to commend the movie for being oddly cultured, though. It actually pronounces the word "karate" correctly and made me aware of the different names for rock-paper-scissors worldwide.

ANIMATION:

The animation itself isn't half-bad, using some decent tweening and effective poses that, while looking a bit stiff at times, is still visually-fit enough to be an actual TV show. It's certainly above Johnny Test. My problem is with the art-style which looks flat, sterile, and a little too bland for my liking.

While the character designs themselves are fine, the style they are animated in makes the movie look too generic to stand out from a visual perspective and may actually contribute to the "boring" moniker that people often ascribe to it. The backgrounds, however, work in their simplicity and are really charming to look at. I just think it would be better if they were contrasted with black outlines around the characters, instead of them both being flat.

Conclusion:

So to wrap this up, I'll answer the question: "If you think Chop Kick Panda is actually a good movie, reminiscent of animated comedies people typically really like, why are there so many videos trashing it or calling it 'painfully mediocre'?" If I had to guess, it's because, to most of the people making these critique videos, the worse the quality of the movie, the more enjoyment they get out of it.

After all, they're not watching Chop Kick Panda to assess its quality, its quality is already assumed to be very bad and they're just there to riff on it. So when they go into the movie and realize that it's trying actually be good, they have to work with attempting to mock some actually clever jokes, harping on some of the duds, or just making fun of the animation because these reviews need to fill 30 minutes somehow.

However, if you look past all of that, you'll find a pretty good animated comedy on your hands. It may not be the best of the best, but hey, Renegade Animation has two other surprisingly-good mockbusters to look out for and they've much improved on the formula Chop Kick Panda laid out for them.

Give It A Chance - Pandas Aren't Copywrited
chi-favole24 August 2012
If you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, the same should go for movies. Though "Chop Kick Panda" does share similarities with "Kung-Fu Panda", it's different enough that it doesn't deserve such ridicule.

The bare-bones synopsis would be "Dad with menial job (janitor) goes to son's Career Day and lies about what he actually does (warrior). Son and friends ask to visit his place of work, so Dad has to keep up the charade. Meanwhile, Bad Guy wants an item with power that his twin brother has hidden, and sends his henchman to retrieve it. Dad wins the day by using said item to give him courage. The End."

Look past the martial artist animals - that's been done for years. And lots of stories use the trope of a useless item giving someone courage ("Dumbo", anyone?). Watch this movie for the dialogue. You can tell the creators are self-aware. They know they were asked to design a "Kung-Fu Panda" look-alike, so they got just close enough to slide this masterpiece past their bosses. The rest of it feels witty and creative. (Some of the jokes are even "Animaniacs" and older "Family Guy" level!)

The drawing style the characters is simplistic, but they are hilariously expressive in their subtlety. And the voice acting is actually quite good! (If Bali's one-liners don't make you at least crack a smile, you may have no soul.)

All I ask is that people watch this movie for what it actually is and not for what they think it was supposed to be. If you go in expecting a KFP rip-off, that's all you're going to see. And, frankly, you're going to miss out on a surprisingly good movie!

Cinematic Masterpiece
mollyruss72 September 2013
Amazing cinematic masterpiece, Oscar worthy? Definitely. One of the best films I've seen in years. The humour is witty and genius, the animation is on par. This film puts Hayio Miyazaki to shame. I would watch again, I'd watch it 100 times, I'll show it to all my friends. I saw no resemblance to kung-fu panda, the story line was completely different, it's about an IDIOT panda and he's a father, how different can you get. It's lovable, Heart warming and family friendly. The plot development is amazing, the character development is great for a 40 minute film, you grow to love and care about these characters and want to come back for more. The end left me questioning a sequel, I pray for a Chop Kick Panda sequel. 10/10.
