A Disappointing and Unlikable Film that Fails to Deliver on Its Potential
FilmFanatic202313 January 2023
"The Drop" is a film that had the potential to be a cringe-worthy comedy, but unfortunately, it falls short in delivering on that promise. The premise of a woman dropping her friends' baby on her head while attending their tropical getaway wedding is intriguing, but the film fails to fully explore the comedic potential of that situation. Director and co-writer Sarah Adina Smith offers some inspired moments and laughs here and there, but too often, running bits simply don't pay off. The pacing is shaggy, and it feels as if the actors did a lot of improvising. The characters are all so superficial and unlikable that it often makes the film feel interminable.

The film follows married Los Angeles bakers Lex and Mani as they attend the destination wedding of their lesbian friends, Peggy and Mia. The wedding party is made up of a bunch of awful, selfish people who rip into each other, but they are not flawed in a complicated, compelling way. The dialogue is low-key, and the pacing is shaggy, making it difficult to care when the film aims for real emotional stakes towards the end. The film starts off upbeat and optimistic, but as the weekend progresses, the problems arise, and the film never feels like it's going anywhere.

In conclusion, "The Drop" is a film that had the potential to be a cringe-worthy comedy, but it falls short in delivering on that promise. The pacing is shaggy, the characters are unlikable, and the film never feels like it's going anywhere.

A comedy without laughs...
paul_haakonsen14 January 2023
I sat down to watch the 2022 comedy "The Drop" here in 2023 without ever having heard about it. But I figured with it being a comedy, that I would give the movie a chance.

Writers Sarah Adina Smith and Joshua Leonard put together a somewhat offbeat storyline and script here. And I guess it is sort of either a love or hate it thing. I found the movie to be a bit too monotonous, and I was sort of disappointed with the total lack of comedy throughout the 92 minutes that the movie ran for.

The acting performances in "The Drop" were actually fairly good, and they had a good cast ensemble. I was only familiar with Jillian Bell and Susan Sullivan on the cast list here.

Sure, "The Drop" was a watchable movie, and there was something interesting about the offbeat approach that they writers took to the storyline. However, I was expecting laughs, as the movie was labeled as a comedy, so I ended up somewhat disappointed.

My rating of director Sarah Adina Smith's 2022 movie lands on a four out of ten stars.

It wanted to be funny. Wasn't.

Bad. Maybe I don't get it!? Not funny. The set up was there but not the punchline. Again. I just might not get it. Not for me. So I guess it's maybe a very long narrative that is the setup and then the punchline, if you can call it that, didn't deliver. This "comedy" goes over my head. Bad. Maybe I don't get it!? Not funny. The set up was there but not the punchline. Again. I just might not get it. Not for me. So I guess it's maybe a very long narrative that is the setup and then the punchline, if you can call it that, didn't deliver. This "comedy" goes over my head. Maybe it's French style comedy that I don't "get". Definitely a different take on a comedy movie. You tell me. I say bad. Waste of time.

Very bad overall

Here's the thing about a Duplass brother's film : they come up with a concept, an idea, usually one that's thought provoking or is intended on holding a mirror up to society and the viewer - but these screenplays are very thin and tend to rely heavily on the talent of the respective cast to fill in all of the gaps and spaces and "lacking moments" - and don't get me wrong, I LOVE Aparna and Anna Konkle (they are both madly funny although in different ways - and huge talents) and, of course with Jillian Bell it goes d without saying - buy in my opinion, in many of the more recent Duplass productions and definitely in 'The Drop' this is especially true - it's just lacking and to label it a 'cringe comedy' Is a cop out -

Such a waste of my time
drsawnlh13 January 2023
Even though the trailer is not attractable, I expected some quite good things from this movie because of some familiar talents and also the Production companies which are "Hulu" & "Stage 6 Film". But it was such a total Lack of taste at all & a waste of my time. I didn't see any comedic sense throughout the entire movie. Most of their scripts are all about Dirty Jokes which are not funny or hilarious as well. The Cinematogrpahy standard is too low which feels like they have filmed with a Director's smartphone. It is too early to say that but this could be one of the worst movies for 2023 for sure.

Really Bad.
ohmyblondie15 January 2023
Not witty, not funny, not anything really. Horrible writing and character development because I seriously couldn't have cared less about the majority of them or any of the relationships working out. Jillian Bell is the only reason this movie got bumped up from 1 star to 2, at least she is good for some chuckles given you like her brand of humor. If she wasn't in it, I don't think I would've made it through the whole movie. I've never been more annoyed by an entire cast in my life. Cringe doesn't even describe it. More like painful.

I audibly laughed when I saw a 10 star review in here. You can't convince me that wasn't posted by someone from the cast, crew or one of their friends or family.

Yikes. What did I just watch?

Warning: Spoilers
The 2 stars I gave this film go to each of the Duplass brothers , because I respect their work. I feel bad giving this such a low score , but this movie was bad. I was hoping it would be a comedic take on the tv show " The Slap" . Which I really enjoyed a few years back .

The previews of this made me laugh. I thought I was going to watch a relatable comedy about different parenting styles and what can happen to a close knit group of friends as they begin to age and have children.

Unfortunately, my thought process while watching this went from " ok , these characters are a little bit over the top and exaggerated, but it's kind of funny and I kind of get where they are going ..." to " I hate every one of this weird group and don't care what happens to any of them".

I wanted to root for the main couple , but I found myself wishing Mani would have swam to shore & caught the next plane home to surprise his mom for her Birthday . Before he filed for divorce ! I did like the character of Manis mom. Being a mom of a grown son about to have his first child , I found her texts to him hilarious and relatable . But she wasn't in the film enough to make a difference . The couple who were getting married could have been cute , but I couldn't get past the feeling that the one with the gun was having some serious anxiety &mental health issues related to her baby . Seems someone needed to take that gun away and she needed a good therapist more than an island wedding . Them firing a gun in the air at the end was just one more bizarre thing that made no sense . But at that point ,I had given up trying to make sense of any of those characters. They were all self absorbed ( not just and obnoxious. To be fair , the non gun toting , seemingly more mentally stable part of the couple who was getting married s was more likable than the rest of them . I found it odd that the woman who dropped the baby had also slept with just about everyone in that friend group and they all still seemed to have some unresolved feelings involving her, yet it was never really addressed as anymore than a passing thought . The worst part though ,was the sex obsessed kid . Maybe I am just very naive and sheltered , but I don't know any parents that would defend their kids use of porn in public with no headphones , no matter how" sex positive" they are. Then the whole part about him getting off at the table ?Gross , Ridiculous & not funny at all. I know I was supposed to be won over by mani & lexis sudden willingness to move. And sacrifice for each other , at least in that brief moment, after all the awful things the audience had to endure about them before that. But all I could think was " wow , that poor kid" and also "these people are a marriage and family therapists dream ! " I think the end sums up the whole movie for me. Instead of something enjoyable and cute coming out of it, what was delivered instead was a big pile of crap. Better luck next time Duplass bros . I still love you and will watch your stuff !

No movie will try harder to make you laugh
Jblum514 January 2023
The Drop tells the story of 4 couples at a destination wedding when one friend drops a baby. The movie will then spend most of the runtime in the fall out of this and the wedding after.

Mark Duplass is one of my favorite film makers/actors and when I saw him promote this, I figured I'd give it a shot. The story itself is dreadfully written. The movie itself has been done many times where a group of couples have a weekend together and compare their relationships for one reason or another. I feel like the writer thought wouldn't it be just hilarious if the reason was that someone dropped a child? No not really it turns out.

The characters are remarkably unlikeable. Most are selfish , one demential narcissistic and have terrible chemistry with each other. The entire story itself is so shallow it doesn't justify the movie's gimmick. This isn't a dark comedy and most of the humor comes from sex jokes. Some work, most don't and thinking back I can think of 4-5 times I laughed out loud. With so many desperate jokes though it has a very low hit rate and it takes away from the things that actually do work.

Overall due to the terrible plot, shallow writing and characters this makes for a dreadful and pointless movie. There are some laughable moments but they are pancaked in by udder dreadfulness. Drop this entire movie from your que.

Mani is the best
ecmac-4900416 January 2023
I watched this movie today. I had no expectations and no plot knowledge. It's a good character study during a vacation. Have you ever had 2nd thoughts about going with friends on a trip? I didn't like the characters but they were solid. I only cared about Mani. Assuming he's only been been married a short time. They are going on a destination wedding and they are over involved in the planning. Maybe he is shocked by the "first" bad event in their marriage.

Am I the only person who thinks the Event was over blown? Maybe that was intended. Watching the group react to what happened is when the character study.

It's a beautiful location, quirky (selfish) characters, and there is a major transformation. I think it was entertaining for couples who have friends like these characters.

Enough Laughs to Make It a Decent Way to Pass the Time
daniel_cody_l25 June 2023
The Drop is one of those movies that is so bad it's good. While it may not be the funniest film out there, it certainly has enough funny moments to make it an enjoyable comedy.

The plot is goofy and nothing groundbreaking, but it serves as a decent enough backdrop for the film's many comedic moments.

One of the standout features of The Drop is its cast. The film features a talented group of actors who all deliver solid performances, even if the material they are working with is not always up to par.

While the film is certainly not without its flaws - the pacing can be a bit uneven at times, and some of the jokes fall flat - it is ultimately an enjoyable comedy that is worth a watch. It may not be the funniest movie out there, but it has enough laughs to make it a decent way to pass the time. If you're in the mood for a lighthearted comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously, The Drop is definitely worth checking out.

Here To Offset the Hate
gallihug14 January 2023
I have been regularly using IMDb for nearly 2 decades and have never posted a review or even rated a film. I felt compelled to write this review because it currently has a rating of 4.3 and somebody needs to vouch for this movie being an enjoyable experience.

I found this movie highly entertaining. It had me laughing out loud several times. It is a bit offbeat and definitely a fair amount of "cringe comedy". A lot of people just don't like this type of movie and I understand that. It's different. It's a good combination of dark humor and current traditional comedy.

Almost all the characters have unflattering qualities at times but I couldn't help but love every one of them. Credit to the writers for hilarious lines and situations and to all the actors for adding something uniquely humorous to their role.

If have you enjoyed dark comedy movies such as Young Adult, World's Greatest Dad, or Big Fan; I would give this one a shot.

I knew as soon as that baby hit the concrete this movie would not be for everyone, but it DEFINITELY deserves a higher rating than it currently has.

Some good scenes but also some a bit boring.
deloudelouvain4 February 2023
The Drop gets some harsh negative reviews on here. I agree it isn't the greatest comedy but there are enough funny scenes to keep you entertained. I basically watched this one because I like Jillian Bell. Without knowing what the movie was going to be about I was genuinely surprised by the actual drop, thought it was going to be something completely different. Not a bad thing though as it was surprising and funny. The problem with the plot is that there are too much scenes that aren't that funny. The good scenes compensate a bit but not enough to make it exceptionally good. The Drop is worth a watch but that's about it.

This was a good concept that falls short of its potential due to inconsistent writing
kevin_robbins23 January 2023
The Drop (2022) is a movie that my wife and I recently watched together on Hulu. The storyline follows a "happily married couple" who upon arriving at a destination wedding accidentally drops one of the guest's babies. As the couple are around the other couples during various wedding activities, they determine they aren't so happy; maybe happier than the other couples, but not where they need to be.

This movie is directed by Sarah Adina Smith (The Midnight Swim) and stars Jermaine Fowler (Coming to America 2), Anna Konkle (Rosewood), Robin Thede (Insecure), Jennifer Lafleur (Nope), Elisha Henig (The Sinner), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Free Guy) and Joshua Leonard (Blair Witch Project).

The storyline for this had some potential but the comedic content was inconsistent. The diversity of the characters and the relationship dynamics were unique and well displayed. The dialogue and soundtrack at times is painful as is some of the comedic scenarios which were stale and painful to watch. There are some good chuckles, and the cast delivers excellent performances, but the writing was very up and down. This movie doesn't take itself seriously at all and wasn't very realistic. It is shot well and I was impressed with the cinematography.

Overall, this was a good concept that falls short of its potential due to inconsistent writing. I would score this a 4/10 and only recommend if nothing better is on.

Waste of time and Cringe doesn't even cover it.
mapj-9492217 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had hoped this "comedy" would have 'some' funny moments, however there literally are less than 5 "funny" parts, if you would even call them funny. Its beyond cringe and boring. I couldn't care less what happens to the characters or their relationships. Most of the characters are less than likeable and I don't find obnoxious or sexual humor to be appealing. #SPOILER# there is a teenager that is sex obsessed and makes advances towards the adults. He even jacks off during the rehearsal dinner, while talking to his adult (former) babysitter, its disgusting. But apparently it's supposed to be hilarious. It litterally was the longest 92 minutes, couldn't wait for it to end.

It's not for dumb people...
crutchsa17 January 2023
Not the greatest film ever made. Not the worst. It should be labeled more Drama with some comedic moments than a cringe comedy. While there are several funny moments, you have to have a certain level of intellect to enjoy the sass. The characters are all modern day people we know in everyday life, there are also several relatable awkward moments to happen everyday to real people. I would have enjoyed it more if the laughs were closer to the lighthearted side but its not a complete fail ! Definitely not for everyone but I thought it was mildly amusing. If you can laugh at darker situations then go forth and give it a watch. If droping a baby on the concrete offends you, then you should probably watch anything else.

Brilliant!
jeffreymetzelaar14 January 2023
I loved the movie. Started of pretty light and then comes the drop. Awkwardness all over and it was absolutely a cringe comedy.

The writing was pretty good. The story was chaotic but in a good way. You can feel the bitterness in every character developing with every minute. This movie has a lot of subtle layer that are overseen easily. For people who have quite some life experience this is a must watch, also for the people who don't. There are a lot of lessons to be learned.

Loved it from the beginning to the end and I can't wait for a sequel.

If you're looking for a dumbed down Hollywood comedy, don't watch this.

Great acting, great location, great movie.

8/10.

Levi is Exploring
nogodnomasters18 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Lexi (Anna Konkle) and Mani (Jermaine Fowler) are an LA couple who are attempting to have a baby. She operates a bakery called "Carbs." They are missing his mother's birthday in New York to go to an island and attend her friend's wedding and she has to bring the cake. The friend Mia (Aparna Nancherla_ (and former lover) is getting married to Peggy (Jennifer Lafleur). They are all flying down to a resort owned by their friends Lindsey (Jillian Bell) and Josh (Joshua Leonard). At the airport Lexi gets stuck holding the baby and while shooing an insect, drops the toddler on her head. The child will endure but the event sets off everyone into reading something more into the incident than what it was. We discover this is really Lexi's crowd as she has slept with at least three of them. Mani feels out of place.

The film has a lot of sexual humor. Most of it was funny except for Levi which was meant to be crude funny. The film would have been far better with A listers like Kevin Hart playing Mani, Kristen Wiig for Lexi and Rebel Wilson instead of Jillian Bell. Turn it into a real comedy.

Guide: F-word. Sex. Distant Nudity.

Average women
johngrenier-8408314 January 2023
I liked this movie because I saw an the average women naked. Which is nice to see. I can see swimsuit models naked any time.

I thought the movie was very funny. It showed the funny side of awkward human beings. It had a diverse cast but not pushing it down my throat. It certainly showed the awkward imperfect side of human beings. It's nice to see men in movies dating swimsuit models. The women in this movie were beautiful in their averagness (?). Women comedians can be really funny without being pc. It showed with a women punching another women. And at the very end. Only 17 characters left (letters)

Very very funny
ginalomb15 January 2023
Watched it two times. In my opinion it's the Best 1.5 hours of movie watching I've had in a while. Great character development in the time allotted. It's easy to get an idea of the backstory of each person despite i. Depth character development, enhanced by the dialogue and unspoken behaviors of each character. We felt that each character is Extremely relatable, or at least recognizable, with each and every line spoken. The humor is specialized. Too damn funny.... But only certain minds will get it... realized that while watching. Bravo to cast and screen writers who delivered a ridiculously funny presentation of what it's like to be married, in a relationship, a parent, an ex, a partner etc. Lots of layers explored in a hilarious way.
