Filler episode

I'm doing a rewatch for the first time since the show originally aired. I obviously liked it the first time around because I watched the whole thing. This time, I notice season 2 is not doing it for me as much as season 1. Perhaps this is partly because it's a longer season so they have to spread out the storyline. This episode especially felt like filler and is probably my least favorite so far.

Part of what is so unsatisfying is that one big plotline and one minor one basically fizzle out. It reminds you that the same thing happened to most of the plotlines that originated in season 1. The biggest was Annie's relationship with Ben including the mystery of who he was. She was fixated on him for years, she found him, then he left her again. In the end she says "well, he's safe" and that's it. Done. It's like it never happened. Such a letdown.

It seems now the investigation into Arthur is just over, which might be for the best. Personally, I never really understood exactly what the investigation was about. We knew Henry was feeding possibly false info the Liza to take Arthur down. But it always felt like some bombshell accusation about him was missing. Maybe part of the problem was that everything was happening off screen. We were just told about fragments. Meanwhile, the audience did find out who the mole was - but the Agency never did. But that was just dropped. They stopped looking. And now the investigation into Arthur is just over also.

Auggie's promotion storyline seemed to be pointless beyond giving us this single episode with his replacement. Thankfully, she's gone quickly. Very tired at this point that every procedural has to have a (usually female) tech person who is on the spectrum and oh gosh they don't have people skills but they can rattle off statistics and tech jargon with rapid speech. It's hacky and cliché.

So at this point, they've forgotten the mole. Henry has disappeared. Jay is mostly in the background. Annie has wiped Ben from her memory and is completely over him. Arthur and Joan are getting along for now. Instead, the only character being developed is Annie's sister who is having marital trouble and, frankly, I don't think many people who are watch are tuning in for that. On top of that, the mission of the week was way to easy and mundane.

Very unsatisfying episode.
