Kevin Phillips’ feature directorial debut is a knock-out. There’s no other way to put it, really. Comparison is being made by many to Stand By Me, but I think it’s closer to Jacob Estes’ 2004 thriller Mean Creek. To talk about either film, the same spoiler is unavoidable: a bully dies, accidentally, and the rest of the film is how the characters deal with it. Where the two films depart is that fallout and the tone therein. Mean Creek handles how the guilt can consume you, and while Super Dark Times absolutely deals with that, the manifestation of it is drastically different. It’s strange, occasionally comedic, and always intriguing.

Lucky Mckee has had his ups and downs with various projects from the criminally underseen The Woods to the success of films like The Woman. With his latest, All Cheerleaders Die, Mckee collaborated with his old college buddy Chris Sivertson to relive their college days by fleshing out a short film to a full feature film filled with cheerful mayhem.
Here’s what Mckee had to say about the film, which is now available on VOD with a Blu-ray/DVD release on July .
Dread Central: Did your success working with Jack Ketchum lean you towards collaborating again this time around with Chris? What advantages do you find in that kind of mutual relationship?
Lucky McKee: Film is, in its essence, a collaborative art. It's a blast to create stories with good brains. Chris and I have collaborated like this since we were teenagers so it's pretty natural at this point.

Co-director and writer Chris Sivertson took the time to speak with us recently regarding his collaboration with longtime friend and cohort Lucky Mckee for their new film All Cheerleaders Die, which enjoyed its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Dread Central:Can you talk a little about how long the idea for All Cheerleaders Die has been rolling around in both of your heads? Did it just arise from a late night wandering around the USC campus?
Chris Sivertson: We came up with the idea about a year out of film school at USC. We'd been reading indie magazines, seeing how filmmakers were picking up the first Dv cameras and making b-movies for very little money. We watched a bunch of those films and decided that it would be a great format to shoot our first feature. Low cost, low risk, freedom to experiment. So we cooked up a simple idea: football players vs.

The newest crowd-sourcing resource for indie filmmakers, TentSquare, has officially launched and is offering all kinds of goodies in their search for the next Carpenter or Romero. Think you have the chops? Then you had better listen up!
Directors and Cinematographers can submit today for a chance to be flown to set and paid to direct or shoot the first TentSquare short film, While You Were in a Coma. Members have been voting on the story direction as the McManus Bros. (Funeral Kings) have been writing it over the last month.
When voting opens up for the competitions on April 24th, voters will be entered into the TentSquare Voter Sweepstakes, for a chance to become an Executive Producer and get TentSquare merchandise. Each vote is treated as an entry, so the more you vote the better your chances to win.
Later this summer, TentSquare will begin its first Feature Film Competitions and Screenplay Development.

Like them or not, Kickstarter and Indiegogo have helped countless filmmakers realize visions that would never have been realized without the benefit of crowdsourcing. What's the next step in the future of fan-funded films? It just might be a new service called Tentsquare. Read on for details!
Deadline reports that Modernciné and Modern Distributors CEO and filmmaker Andrew van den Houten (Offspring) is set to launch the brand new digital film hub, which uses crowdsourcing as its hook.
Tentsquare integrates a social networking element in the making of short and feature-length film projects, forming what van den Houten describes as a "digital production studio." He’s recruited fellow indie filmmakers including the McManus Brothers (Funeral Kings) and Jeffrey Reddick (the Final Destination franchise) to the budding platform.
Members can track and interact with each other via the Tentsquare network and, in theory, contribute input into story, character development, and casting of Tentsquare projects.

Cinematographer Alex Disenhof spoke to Indiewire about shooting "Fishing Without Nets," a U.S. Dramatic entry that premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was directed by Cutter Hodierne. "Fishing Without Nets" chronicles the life of a Somali husband and father forced into piracy in order to provide for his family. Disenhof previously worked on "The We and the I," "Funeral Kings" and "Emoticon." Which camera and lens did you use? We used the Red Epic and Red Scarlett cameras with Zeiss Super Speeds and Angenieux Optimo Dp 16-42mm, and 30-80mm zooms. What was the most difficult shot in your movie, and how did you pull it off? We had many difficult shots, as we often did ten minute long handheld takes looking 360 degrees. Possibly the most difficult of all was shooting handheld on a rickety wooden boat deep out at sea. I had to follow several 'pirates'...

Lauren Ashley Carter: Thanks for having me! Andrew Van Den Houten and I have worked together previously on two films, Rising Stars and The Woman. He asked me to read the script and tell him what I thought. I called him after I finished and told him I really liked it.

Modernciné has released a new behind-the-scenes image from All Cheerleaders Die, a high school-set supernatural thriller written and directed by Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) and Chris Sivertson (The Lost, I Know Who Killed Me). The flick has entered Adr. Check it out!
The film is produced by Andrew van den Houten (Funeral Kings, The Woman) and Robert Tonino (The Woman, In the Family); stars Caitlin Stasey (Tomorrow, When the War Began; I, Frankenstein) and Sianoa Smit-McPhee (“Hung”); and introduces Tom Williamson. Executive producing is Arrien Schiltkamp with Russell Dinstein on board as co-executive producer.
This is the second collaboration between McKee and Modernciné, who worked together previously on the thriller The Woman; Cheerleaders marks the first time Sivertson will work with the company. All Cheerleaders Die is actually a reimagining of a video project McKee and Sivertson wrote and shot immediately after graduating from USC Film School some ten years ago.

Three 14-year-olds cause all sorts of trouble in and around their Catholic middle school. Sounds pretty familiar, perhaps, a bit obvious, and possibly even downright dull. I mean, who still makes movies about troublemaking teenagers these days? First-time fraternal-twin filmmakers Kevin and Matthew McManus just made one, and it's sort of great. Sure, it's laden with vulgar talk for some easy laughs, but that's about where the simple stuff ends. At its best moments, Funeral Kings is a mixture of Stand By Me, Superbad, the deservedly obscure Heaven Help Us, and a particularly perceptive, enjoyably gritty independent comedy that knows what it's talking about. The town is unnamed and the era is unspecified, but our three central characters are the baby-faced Charlie (Alex Maizus), the...

Held back on Sept. 21-29, the 5th annual Arizona Underground Film Festival was a major blow-out event of extreme underground greatness. And, to top it all off, they handed out a gaggle of awards to both feature films and shorts alike.
The big winner was the Best of Fest award that went to Michael Melamedoff’s sly drama The Exhibitionists, about a bunch of hedonists gathered on New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, the Audience Award went to the reality TV parody Ghosts With Shit Jobs by Chris McCawley, Jim Morrison, Jim Munroe and Tate Young; and Kenton Bartlett’s torture flick Missing Pieces won the Director’s Award.
Some other winners include Spencer Parsons’ Saturday Morning Massacre for Best Horror Feature, a film that while not reviewed yet on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film we’ve seen it and easily declare one of the best horror movies of the last few years.

To celebrate their 5th anniversary, the Arizona Underground Film Festival has expanded to a whopping nine nights on Sept. 21-29 for a cinematic event the likes of Tucson has never seen before!
The shenanigans kick off with the opening night film The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, an experimental Italian feature directed by Davide Manuli and starring Vincent Gallo as the hero and the villain to a strange young boy, then end with the closing night film Jason M. Solomon’s nostalgic documentary 7 Years Underground: A 60′s Tale, which profiles the legendary Cafe Au Go Go in NYC that hosted such up-and-coming acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, George Carlin, Lily Tomlin and more.
In between those two films lies a twisted carnage of movie mayhem, including Spencer Parsons’ demented homage to ’70s mystery cartoons Saturday Morning Massacre; Michael Melamedoff exploitative semi-doc The Exhibitionists; Stephen Amis’ Australian WWII sci-fi...
