Ramona, one of the ladies at the base hobby center, says that she is a retired Seabee. Seabee is the nickname for the United States Navy Construction Battalions who are responsible for any construction, repair or demolition needed by the Navy or Marine Corps in a combat zone. The Seabees were created during World War II to replace civilian building contractors, as a new international law at the time stated that civilian workers who resist an attack can be classified as enemy gorillas and summarily executed if captured by the enemy. As the military did not want to have a bunch of civilian construction workers who could not fight back in the event of an enemy attack the idea for the Navy's Construction Battalions was born, a group of experienced construction workers who were also trained military fighters, which is how they came to get their other nickname "The Fighting Seabees", a movie about these events was made: The Fighting Seabees (1944). In fact a new weapon of war developed by the Seabees in World War II helped the US win its island hoping campaign in the Pacific that ended with the battle of Iow Jima. The Seabees built a new type of tank called the "Satan", what was different about this tank is that it did not fire an artillery shell, instead the main gun barrel was turned into a giant flame thrower. The Satan tanks could shoot a stream of napalm from a distance of 150 feet, which became very effective at clearing out all the Japanese pillbox bunkers built across the islands they occupied. These tanks were not just an effective practical weapon, but also a very effective psychological weapon, Japanese troops greatly feared these tanks and a number of units surrendered when confronted with one of them rather than risk being burned alive. The Seabees were credited with saving a lot of American lives with their Satan tanks and became a military legend because of them.
