Despite its exclusive-sounding title, The 1% Club is really anyone’s game.
The Prime Video adaptation stays true to the ongoing British original of the same name, offering as level a playing field as any game show we’ve seen. There’s no real preparation you can do before heading into the massive arena, where 100 players solve logic puzzles as host Patton Oswalt genially presents them. Extensive knowledge of some obscure subject or history won’t come in handy, so don’t bother cramming. You can also save the pop culture trivia, Oswalt’s domain and the basis for Amazon’s upcoming Jeopardy! spin-off. This race isn’t necessarily going to the swiftest either; everyone’s playing under the same time constraints, so there’s no ringing in first to answer.

After conquering broadcast syndication and establishing a solid foothold in network primetime TV, Jeopardy! is moving into the streaming realm.
Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered a version of the beloved game show called Pop Culture Jeopardy!, which will be the first iteration of the franchise to debut on a streaming service. Sony Pictures Television, which is behind all versions of Jeopardy!, is producing.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! will differ somewhat from the classic game in that three-person teams will compete against one another rather than individual players. The show will keep the classic answer-and-question format, however, and its categories will cover music, movies, sports and all elements of popular culture. Michael Davies will serve as executive producer, as he does for the syndicated show and ABC’s Celebrity Jeopardy! and Jeopardy! Masters.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with our partners at Amazon to make Prime Video the home for our new Jeopardy!

Scripted formats were placed front and center of BBC Studios’ panel at Series Mania, as the Doctor Who seller confirmed it is making up to three more versions of Ghosts and has bought Spain’s Brutal Media.
One of the hit BBC show’s creators, Simon Farnaby, recently told a podcast the show – which has achieved smash ratings on CBS in the U.S. – is being remade in Germany and Spain.
Matt Forde, who runs BBC Studios Global Entertainment, confirmed “there are two or three other versions in the works.”
“We love those shows and love the UK versions,” said Forde. “We are finding ways into these worlds in local creative communities.” Ghosts was recently renewed for a fourth CBS season, although the BBC version has ended.
Deadline revealed recently that BBC Studios’ deal with Lionsgate, which spawned the likes of Ghosts, had elapsed, but Forde was bullish about the scripted formats game.

Amazon is getting into the game show business — and bringing in Fox as a partner.
The tech giant’s Prime Video streaming platform has named Patton Oswalt as host of The 1% Club, an adaptation of a hit British quiz show. In a novel arrangement, Fox will air the show in a second window, eight days after episodes debut on Prime Video. British stand-up comedian and actor Lee Mack fears the death of the traditional TV sitcom is upon us.
The star of BBC comedy Not Going Out – which celebrates its 100th episode this Christmas and becomes the second longest-running homegrown sitcom (only Last of the Summer Wine ran longer) – told The Times he feared the demise of the genre:
“We have no young comics coming through who really see, let alone want to write, studio sitcoms. And if we’re not careful it’s going to die.”
The article included the statistic that in 1984 there were 60 newly commissioned studio sitcoms in the UK. By 2004 it was seven. This year the number is zero.
Mack added that he sees the challenge as a class issue, with middle-class commissioners and journalists failing to understand what he calls “the working-class art” of the popular genre. He added: “It is a unique thing because it...

European TV giant ProSiebenSat.1 has restructured its Seven. One Entertainment Group — with the changes seeing top German channel manager Daniel Rosemann exiting after 15 years and the CEO of Joyn also leaving.
The new structure sees ProSiebenSat.1 CEO Bert’s Habets add the same role at Seven. One Entertainment to his duties, and comes as the Unterföhring-based continues its reorganization as a digital-first operation. Some key staff have exited and about 10% of the entire ProSiebenSat.1 workforce have been cut as part of the process.
The new changes see Seven. One Chief Content Officer Henrik Pabst take on an expanded role overseeing content for all channels and platforms and Katharina Frömsdorf upped to lead streamer Joyn as Chief Platforms and Growth Officer. Tassilo Raesig, CEO of Joyn, and René Sahm, CFO and COO of Joyn are exiting by mutual agreement “due to differing views on the future direction of the platform,” according to ProSiebenSat.

Major construction work along Cannes’ famed Croisette has turned this most glamorous of French seaside towns into a chaotic building site. Television executives, in town for the MIPCOM Cannes international TV confab, which runs through Thursday, Oct. 19, have been forced to run a gauntlet of concrete slabs and roped-off danger zones.
It’s an apt metaphor for the mood at MIPCOM this year. A conflagration of factors — the actors strike, rising inflation, a slump in the advertising market, and a pull-back in investment by the global streamers — have combined to weaken the foundations of the international TV business. Executives are treading carefully as if in fear the whole structure could collapse under their feet.
“There’s a lot of fear out there, a lot of companies are worried they might not be around in six, 12, 18 months,” said one MIPCOM veteran, the CEO of a mid-sized European production and distribution company.

Germany’s Zdf Studios has secured worldwide distribution rights for documentary series “Hitler’s Power” (3 x 50’), an exploration of how and why Hitler rose to power and the terrible events that followed.
On Jan. 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. The series examines why the Nazi leader was confident of the approval of most Germans, even when the war was clearly lost, and what led Germans to support the Holocaust.
Eco Media, History Media and Zdf Digital, a Zdf Studios subsidiary, teamed to co-produce “Hitler’s Power” in association with Zdf Studios.
Ralf Rückauer, VP, unscripted, Zdf Studios, said: “’Hitler’s Power’ is very much a modern look at this period of German history, designed for a young audience that is disconnected from the generation who experienced the war or its aftermath. With the extensive research undertaken and its high production values, the series offers a distinctive and...

All through the run-up to series eight of Inside No. 9, audiences were told to expect an episode called ‘Hold on Tight!’, set on a No.9 bus. Inside No. 9 is an anthology show, in which writer-actors Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith take on different roles in each self-contained episode, alongside an impressive array of guest stars. ‘Hold on Tight!’, press were told, would be an homage to 1970s comedy On the Buses, and would feature guest star Robin Askwith, who is best known for his ‘cheeky’ 1970s sex comedy roles. Photos were released of Askwith, Pemberton and Shearsmith in costume next to a red London bus, and a movie-style poster was made. Clips of Pemberton and Shearsmith in their bus conductor costumes were included in the series eight trailer.
