Michael Cera is an annoying prick
SnoopyStyle5 November 2020
Alicia (Juno Temple) visits her cousin Sara (Emily Browning) and her boyfriend Agustín in Chile. It's her first time outside of America. They with Agustin's sister Bárbara (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and his friend Brink (Michael Cera) go on a road trip. Sara had to go back to school before they arrive at the remote vacation house.

Michael Cera is an annoying prick and it's infuriating to watch him. He almost makes this unwatchable all by himself. He's an annoying jerk and he's so whiny about it. Of course, he's written that way and I can't complain about his acting. It does make it hard to stay with the movie. It does get to an interesting place as Alicia slowly breaks down. Agustin is also a bit annoying with the sleeping pills but he's nothing compared to Brink. If one can live with the annoyance, this is an ok movie.

A Weird Movie that will Leave you Confused and Uneasy
simon-d-cesair12 August 2013
Long Story Short: The Story evolves around Alicia (Juno Temple) – an emotionally fragile young woman, who visits her cousin Sarah (Emily Browning) in Chile. Together with Sarah's boyfriend Agustín (Agustín Silva), Agustín's sister Barbara (Catalina Sandina Moreno), and their very strange friend Brink (Michael Cera) they travel to the countryside. But things aren't as pleasant as they are supposed to be, and especially Brink turns out to be very insensitive and doesn't show any sympathy for Alicia retentiveness. What was meant to be a relaxing vacation for Alicia soon turns into a horrifying experience.

Review: Magic Magic is often advertised as a horror movie, however, I would say it's more of a psychological thriller with a very dark and intense undertone. Juno Temple is giving a master performance, her acting is on point and very disturbing. Michael Cera plays this psycho, who shows not only anti-social but also sadistic tendencies, and everyone was wondering if he would be able to portray a character like Brink. I think he did great, but at the same time, he annoyed the living hell out of me. The camera-work is stunning, and the landscape shots are beautiful. The movie starts very strong and interesting, but leaves you clueless not only until the end, but even past that. There is absolutely no conclusion, the audience is completely left in the dark, and even though the tension and suspense rises it turns out to be a thick cloud of confusion. It seems like someone came up with a good idea but ran out of time to write a satisfying ending. So let's just end it somehow, because at the end of the day indie movies are supposed to keep you guessing and that's what makes them artistic. Not true. Furthermore, character development is hardly existing, and even if Juno Temple convinced with her performance, I couldn't relate to her character because I didn't know enough about her. Magic Magic is not a bad movie but towards the end there are just too many questions unanswered, which might be very unsatisfying.

Warning: Spoilers
Alicia (Juno Temple) visits her cousin Sarah (Emily Browning) in Chile. Sarah is suddenly called back to Santiago to take exams (weak plot point) while Alicia remains isolated with Sarah's inhospitable friends. Brink (Michael Cera) is a tag-a-long who keeps hitting on Alicia who does not like him. In fact I didn't like him. He was immature, prissy, dorky, and creepy all rolled up into one. Barbara (Catalina Sandino Moreno), the host, was cold while Agustin (Agustín Silva) an amateur hypnotist and Sarah's BF lacked personality.

The film was boring for the first hour as sleepless, jet lagged, Alicia didn't want to be on the island anymore than the other people wanted her there. We get clues early on that there are issues. After the first hour, the film turns weird, but I found it lacking in entertainment value because the characters and dialouge had been dead for too long.

This film is not a horror film, nor is it an action-thriller. It is a drama which teases you into thinking it is a thriller. Not something I will own, and regretted the rental.

Parental Guide: F-bomb (2 languages) Nudity (Juno Temple) sex?

If you like closure, don't watch this film.

I still have no idea what this film was about. And I continued watching so I could at least see the ending for the film to just end with no closure... 2 hours of my life I can't get back.

Very confused...
foreversmom9 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure where to start. I feel like I just wasted my time on a movie that really went nowhere. The movie starts out fine, has an interesting cast of characters, and what sounds like an interesting plot. After watching about 30 minutes of the movie, I started to get bored with the way things were going. As I'm sure most people do, I started to form my own opinions on what was going on and was leaning towards Alicia being nuts and having some kind of mental breakdown. I continued to watch the remainder of the film hoping for that 'surprise twist'. Like perhaps we would find out that there really was some kind of "magic magic" going on and Alicia was being affected by it. Some form of possession or ritualistic voodoo type stuff... NOPE! I watch all the way to the end and find out that Alicia was just crazy. But then, her 'friends' take her to a witch doctor and I start thinking "okay, maybe some spirit is going to fly out of her mouth, or she's going to vomit the evil out". NOPE! Just some crazy witch doctor doing some weird ritual that, in essence, just kills her. I watched through the credits still thinking that maybe 'her spirit will be cleansed and re-enter her body, and she would wake up' like the witch doctor said... NOPE! For me, this movie was a huge let down. It had the ability to be something better, but just fell short with the ending.

Non-Entertaining
clovis-57 August 2013
My disappointment from this film is exacerbated by the way the DVD is marketed, with the box cover plastered with a quote from a review that proclaims: "stomach-churning psychological horror . . . a great thrill ride". Perhaps that reviewer is a friend of somebody connected to this film because I found there to be no horror elements, psychological or otherwise, nor any thrills. The characters are unpleasant and annoying, and so is their dialogue. John Cera's portrayal of "Brink" was somewhat diverting for about 5 minutes, after which I found the character to be insufferable. Difficult and unpleasant topics and characters can be presented in an entertaining way, in the hands of the right director and writer. But that's not the case here -- it's just difficult and unpleasant characters and topics in a manifestly non-entertaining, non-interesting film. There's decent camera-work, there's a story somewhere, but it simply is not cinematic. There are some wonderful shots of the southern Chilean landscape, but otherwise I feel like I just lost 97 minutes of my life.

Slow-burning psychological thriller
Red-Barracuda24 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A shy young girl called Alicia goes on a trip to a remote area of Chile for a vacation. When there, she begins to feel threatened by her companions. Before long she starts to experience strange events and the others begin to become alarmed by her behaviour.

This is a real slow-burner of a movie. It hints at all manner of things and remains to the end somewhat enigmatic. It's all about tone and feel. Not a great deal really happens in Magic Magic, so in order to appreciate it you need to just go with its rhythms. It's helped a lot by fine acting; especially lead Juno Temple who puts in another fearless performance. I saw her in the recent Killer Joe in which she was very good and here she is even better in a pretty complex role. Also impressive was Michael Cera who played the annoying man-child Brink who is involved in most of the amusing moments. The cast do well but the group itself is a very strange one in which you probably wouldn't want to spend a lot of time with yourself.

The combination of a paranoid central character with the mysterious foreign setting means that there is often some uncertainty about whether Alicia's problems are psychological or if there is some strange supernatural source in some way involved. By the end there is still a level of doubt and ambiguity on this, although others may have more definite views. For a thriller it's a little too subtle for its own good perhaps, it maybe more accurately could be described as a character study. Either way it does have an interesting ambiance that kept my attention.

They should be sued for moviemagic malpractice.
kylere8 August 2013
I am not sure why this movie is described as, "Ancient indigenous rites, disturbing animal behavior, and captivating hypnotic trances come together in an intense exploration into the darkest corners... when the games go too far, reality unravels with astonishing and deadly consequences." None of this is really true. This movie is about taking a group of reasonably talented actors and handing them a script with awful dialog and a complete lack of plot. Nothing is unique, nothing is surprising, all the "reveals" are really just daily trivia.

In the end, people travel to far away camp, some of them are jerks, one of them is going to go insane, nothing really happens and you will wish you had not wasted your time.

Insanity on film
themissingpatient9 August 2013
Juno Temple plays Alicia, a young American woman who has traveled to South America to share some adventures with her cousin, Sarah, played by Emily Browning. Sarah introduces Alicia to her boyfriend, Agustín, who is currently studying hypnotism, his sister, Barbara, and their mutual American friend, Brink, played by Michael Cera. Together the five of them begin to head for a remote island off the coast of Chile when Sarah is called to return to the city. Alicia then finds herself alone with her cousin's four friends, who speak more Spanish than English, in an unfamiliar land. As culture shock sets in, insomnia and paranoia take control as Brink desperately tries to seduce the emotionally unstable Alicia.

The chaos captured in the film is enough to induce a panic attack in some unsuspecting audience members. This is far from a fun film to watch, do not be fooled by Michael Cera's name. Cera does play the perfect creep though and is a surprisingly good antagonist, even if only in Alicia's perspective. Those looking for Michael Cera comedy in a horror flick are going to hate this. This is an indie psychological drama that will win over film festivals but the majority will despise it for being so obscure and frustrating to watch. No matter how good the film does get, the ending will leave you feeling a little cheated. But perhaps that is the point.

Magic Magic is a well-crafted nightmare in the shell of a story that could have been a romantic comedy adventure. There is so much that could be said to be wrong with the film and yet all the wrongs helped portray a mental breakdown better. It's a heart-breaking story that most people are never going to want to witness again, even if they liked the film.

Weird and Boring
claudio_carvalho9 August 2013
The American Alicia (Juno Temple) travels to Chile to meet her cousin Sarah (Emily Browning) and they immediately travel to a remote island with Sarah's boyfriend Agustin (Agustin Silva), his sister Barbara (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and their friend Brink (Michael Cera). Out of the blue, Sarah returns to the city and Alicia is left alone with the trio of Chileans that speak most of the time in Spanish. Soon the unstable Alicia is unable to sleep and becomes paranoid; she uses lots of pills and gets in a journey with no return.

"Magic Magic" is a weird and boring movie about a tale of paranoia. There is no story; therefore the screenplay is only a development of the storyline (unstable young woman travels to Chile and becomes paranoid with tragic consequences). The result is a hateful movie with non- charismatic characters, no story, no nothing but waste of time. My vote is two.

Title (Brazil): "Viagem Sem Volta" ("Journey with no Return")

Completely misunderstood masterpiece.
eternitycomplex23 August 2013
Perhaps this movie only works if you've known someone with the kind of debilitating paranoia that Alicia (Juno Temple) suffers from. I don't know. All I can say is that I was glued to it from start to finish and I honestly feel that it was masterfully crafted and offers so much more than most people are giving it credit for.

I understand the backlash... it really is NOT a horror movie. But its not a showcase of intangible visual art-house dream-sequence garbage either, which is what I think people might imagine it to be when they read the synopsis. For me, it was never even the slightest bit boring.

If you want to see how mundane situations can be brilliantly transformed into nightmarish experiences for one character, while other characters awkwardly try to deal with it (and often provoke it), eventually watching this dynamic grow to high levels of darkness and intensity, well then this is the movie for you!

I wish more people could look a little deeper and appreciate the many layers and eccentricities of this movie! Like another reviewer mentioned, many of the scenes could be perceived as flat out hilarious. That is, if you can allow yourself to be simultaneously mortified and amused. This movie has the ability to provoke a wide array of CONTRASTING emotions. I've never seen anything quite like it.

It's not a movie for everyone. But if you read this review and still want to watch it, you'll probably think its pretty neat.

Cera and Temple are great in this and the movie really makes you feel uncomfortable the whole time, which helps it. I say B+
cosmo_tiger31 July 2013
"She's not a bad person, I know her, she just needs a doctor for her hand." Alicia (Temple) is a young woman travels to Chile to visit her cousin and her friends. While there the friends begin to make her feel uncomfortable and she wants nothing more then to leave. What starts off as a fun vacation for her soon starts to unravel and becomes something out of a nightmare, for everyone. I will admit that I was kind of looking forward to this mainly for the fact that it looked like Michael Cera was playing a creepy bad guy. Without ruining anything he's not a bad guy but this is a very different part for him. I have to say that Juno Temple was great in this and should get some type of award. As far as the movie, from the opening shot the movie made you feel a little uncomfortable and never really let up at all. The camera work and the acting really leaves you feeling unable to relax and because of that the movie reaches a level of creepiness I wasn't ready for. Watching Temple start to unravel is mesmerizing and when the end finally comes you are left stunned and not sure what to make of what you just saw. A movie that leaves you thinking and wondering to me is the sign of a good movie. Overall, a movie that really comes out of nowhere and makes you feel uncomfortable the whole time, which in this case is a good thing. I give it a B+.

Warning: Spoilers
I found this move...weird. I wasn't bored out of my head, but it was so slow that you could watch first 10 minutes, then fast forward about 1 hour, then watch the ending - because nothing was really happening in between. Maybe people who like this sort of films would enjoy it, but for me it was just a waste of time. Some may appreciate the artistic value of slow camera work, but as far as entertainment value goes - this movie had none. Acting was pretty good, but even that wasn't enough for me to enjoy this movie.

If you still want to watch it - then please do. If not, here comes a spoiler: Group of kids in Chile goes for a trip to a remote island. One of the girls develops an insomnia induced paranoia (at least that what I think it was - but it could have been any other mental problem). Finally she jumps into water, they rescue her, but as there is no medical doctor nearby they take her to a witch doctor. The girl dies (or maybe not - the ending is really weird and does not explain anything). The end.

Warning: Spoilers
Not normally one for reviews but after sitting through 90 to 120 of movie only to have the credits come unexpectedly I felt compelled to write. It has great promise but when a film just "ends" like a smack in the face with a spade you are left feeling like what the fudge I feel cheated. It seems like the film was building up to some huge crescendo and then fell flat. So the main character is paranoid - or is she; OK great had me drawn in but it went from one minute she was OK running about like a loon to the next she's just dies. Like that. Just....em dies! And that's what spoiled it for me!!! Didn't make any sense and I felt cheated so in my opinion don't wasn't your time!

Emily Browning looks like Shannen Doherty's daughter Warning: Spoilers
OK, I apologize. It is perhaps not fair to begin a review with what seems like a total non-sequitur, but in that regard I have an edge on you, kind reader, inasmuch as I know in advance that the review is not going to be especially flattering. So, armed with such foreknowledge, I figured, hey, why not lead with the only really "interesting" fact that those unfortunate enough to watch this will remember when they get home...? Which is that Emily Browning looks EXACTLY like a young Shannen Doherty, the face and bone structure are identical. I mean, wow, is that cool ... or what? Speaking of cool, this movie is not. I see in the reviews that (as expected) we already have a controversy brewing between those who wish they would have had their teeth cleaned INSTEAD OF watching this.. and those who (typically) feel this is a work of suspense on par with the greatest of the great and it was a privilege to be in the same theatre where it was playing.

OK, let me help. The only close analog for this film is Repulsion, one of the most in-depth and brilliant and mesmerizing studies of descent in paranoia ever filmed. I saw Repulsion first-run in a theatre and have seen it a half-dozen times since. One, this is not Repulsion. Two, this is not Godfather. Three, this is not even an especially well-crafted movie, although it is an ambitious one. If you allow yourself to get caught up in it -- itself a dubious choice -- the strangeness of the remote setting, the oddness and lack of empathy among the characters, and the constant whining of Michael Cera (brave of him to take such a self-deprecating role!) will irritate the heck out of you, but it will not necessarily entertain you. And therein is what separates a great film from a wasted opportunity to make a film.

I've never left a review on a movie before in my life but after sitting through that dirge for over 1.5 hours i thought id at least try and warn others from suffering the same waste of time and brain power as i just did.

I think i have said it all really besides, if you are expecting a horror movie, this ain't for you, if you are expecting a thriller then this also ain't for you, drama maybes? nope this ain't for you, i'm not really sure what id class this movie as besides contrived self indulgence nonsense and avoid it at all costs, the last 20 minutes was worse then the 1st 70 and that really is saying something.

avoid at all costs, it really is that bad.

Yeah, Not a bad movie. See it, but beware of ending. SPOILERS!
pjr23530 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
-Red-Barracuda- Really hit the nail on the head about the whole thing.

I suppose I'll just give my general thoughts on it as well.

I'd like to start by saying that the trailer was totally misleading but it did help with keeping the story somewhat a surprise.

First: do not go into this thinking its a Turistas (2006) or something like that. Second: I'm like 90% sure its not about demonic possession or anything of the sort, the movie made it pretty clear.

So for those who didn't get it; Alicia was crazy from the start. With crazy people like this (possibly a paranoid schizophrenic) that are on medication, it is important to note that they are not cured! They are taking medication to suppress symptoms - symptoms that in this case were triggered by a few things surrounding a certain theme. Animals, Pressure and Fear.

On medication and in a calm and controlled situation, Alicia is probably functional - as we see in the beginning. However, her friend abandons her in a 3rd world country during her very first trip out of the US.

(Also hint: Alicia is crumbled on the bathtub floor after her friend tells her she is leaving her there, another person would just be scared or nervous, Alicia was totally broken down and panicked.)

After being tossed to the side and into a group of strangers in an unknown land, they begin their journey even deeper into nowhere. This is where the story becomes very unsure because as we later find out, the 'friends' of Sarah (who is Alicia's friend and lifeboat) are seen - well its a little hard to describe. What we as the viewers see is what Alicia believes she is seeing.

For example in one scene of the movie they completely give away the fact that Alicia is crazy where she is sitting down in the living room with the other woman (Barbara) and out the corner of Alicia'a eye, she thinks Barbara is staring at her in a very weird and uncomfortable way, only when Alicia turns to look (no camera trick or scene cut, she just turns her head normal and the camera focuses) Barbara was reading her book all along and totally minding her own business. Phantom phone calls, hearing voices talking crap about you. Seeing people who aren't there...

So that's really the trick with this movie is that we are watching the events unfold from a crazy persons point of view. Although he did a good job acting strange, Brink (M.Cera) was never really a weirdo - it was all in Alicia's head. Later, Brink finds Alicia's Meds and tries to call attention to it but Sarah is in denial and tells everyone to back off.

I could go on a whole lot more and there is more to talk about but there is too much to this movie, which is a good thing. As -Red-Barracuda- said, and I like that term,it is a 'slow-burner.' But I too was kept interested and entertained throughout.

Heres what I can quickly throw out about the deeper meanings of the movie. One big thing was the death and mistreatment of animals (big trigger for Alicia's metal issues) and the other is altered states of mind or just perception. With the hypnosis and Agustin staring at a wall design trying to hypnotize or put himself in a trance.

I'd like to thank the directors and writers of this story for it was a very interesting trip into the mind of a crazy person and the movie offers enough to merit more than one viewing.

Now for my big gripe. I'm on a roll this week with watching movies that have no real or good ending. I'm like: wtf was that? I don't care how right or wrong I am about my opinions or analysis of this movie, it freaking felt like they didn't know how to end it so they just threw together some ritual crap where they drug Alicia and water-board her to death as a form of ancient cure. c'mon guys.

The movie is very (but justifiably) slow and is good all the way up to the last 6 minutes. See it for the trip, but not for the ending.

I want my 1.5 hour back this torture of a movie wasted.
OmairCh28 July 2014
One star cause I cannot get any lower than that. This movie should be in the DRAMA section of IMDb so that guys like me can avoid it. I was like a thriller with some well known names so must be good.

How wrong I was. This is a complete drama and a bad one at that. Acting is OK but has too much Spanish for my liking. Even till the end I kept thinking something on the lines of horror or thriller would happen but nope nothing. I don't know who approved of the script cause if I read that, I would have gone to sleep in the middle.

But seriously the movie ends so abruptly that when the credits started rolling I was like WHATTT!! they cannot make a movie like that and my first thought was to immediately dig a hole and bury this DVD so to save others from watching it.

Bottom line: Huge disappointment. Really avoid it. There is nothing there to watch except for a very small amount of nudity from Juno Temple but even that is not worth watching this.

an unpopular topic
wvisser-leusden13 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Actually, there's nothing magic about 'Magic Magic'. This film's issue deals with mental illness, an issue sure to chase away many potential viewers - just as happens in real life.

Like its title, this film's advertising is wrong as well. Slogans like 'Stomach-churning psychological horror', and 'a great thrill-ride' evoke wrong expectations. With disappointment as a result.

What we have here, is a mentally ill girl causing trouble in the group she's supposed to function in. Due to the group's isolation on a remote island there's no escape possible; neither for the girl, nor for her companions.

Given this entrance, the process of misunderstanding and failure to connect makes the core of 'Magic Magic'. Although Juno Temple acts the mentally ill-girl fairly well, I think her companions' performances more convincing.

Apart from this all, there must be praise for this film's location on an island in 'Lago Ranco' (= lake Ranco) in southern Chile. The views of its landscape really add an extra bonus.

Hateful characters
Leofwine_draca11 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
MAGIC MAGIC is a horror film with a twist, and to provide any kind of review of the material at all means that I need to spoil the twist. It starts out as your usual 'backpacking Americans run into trouble abroad' type thriller, complete with lots of animal cruelty for those who like that sort of thing, and some of the most repulsive characters ever put on screen.

As the storyline progresses the viewer gradually becomes aware that this is something different. The horrors aren't supernatural and there's no killer here after the group, instead, the horror is internal and more realistic than most; it's the horror of mental illness. Sadly, the script is quite wishy-washy when it comes to the specifics of the thing, and the aforementioned bad characterisation spoils the whole thing. The Chilean locations are nice, but Michael Cera plays one of the most irritating characters I've ever seen, and Juno Temple (KILLER JOE) isn't much better in yet another degrading part.

You don't know what it is? It's like Lars von Trier's Melancholia.
sd-forum7 August 2014
This movie is absolutely amazing and I don't understand all the negative reviews. Really? You didn't understand what this movie is about? Really? You were expecting a horror, fantastical movie?

Let me make it easy for you. This movie is about depression. Being at a strange place. Not feeling belonging to a place. This is like Lars von Trier's Melancholia. Except this is much better and less boring than Lars von Trier's movie.

I was planing on watching this movie in 2-3 sittings thinking it will be slow but this movie completely surprised me and I watched it from start to end. Juno Temple plays so well in this and I could completely understand her pain.

Misunderstood gem about mental illness
JannaCherry7 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I'm glad I went into this film without knowing anything about it.

It seems Magic Magic has been badly marketed as a horror/thriller and therefore it's easy to see why audiences are disappointed. However, what I found it to be was an atmospheric and gripping observation of the central character's fall into mental illness.

Juno Temple's performance as she loses herself in a sea of exhaustion, isolation and fear is absolutely first class. Having known people suffering from severe personality disorders, I could recognise a lot of the characteristics that slowly revealed themselves. Again, brought to screen perfectly by Temple but also a testament to Sebastian Silva's talent as writer/director.

It does begin to unravel slightly at the end as it seeks to reach a dramatic climax (that wasn't needed, in my opinion). However, despite a jarring change in tone, the final 10 minutes offered a necessary critique on the attitudes towards people suffering with mental illness. Notably, the importance of modern medical research and of family and friend's support, compassion and knowledge of the disease.

A slow-burning exploration into the horror of madness that slightly loses it's way towards the end. 7/10

Warning: Spoilers
This is my first review of anything and I'm going to try to be as blunt as I can.

I think Barbara was mean, Brink was annoying, and Sara should not have left her knowing that she had the condition that she had. That was a horrible move.(I'm guessing it's schizophrenia because of her being the age when symptoms first begin)In fact, most of the things that happened could have been avoided if everyone knew that she had an illness. Maybe her cousin wasn't ready to accept it. But I just think this was horrible and none of the characters had any common sense. And the end..just...she dies? Just like that? Completely anticlimactic.

I've seen worse movies but not very many!
jim_landt13 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The most disappointing aspect of this film was the fact that it had the potential to be decent, if the plot had simply gone in a more intelligent direction. The end result is a complete loss of logic and foundation in anything remotely entertaining, enjoyable or believable (even with Herculean suspension of disbelief).

The next most disappointing part of the movie was that Brink did not suffer an extremely graphically depicted, painful death at some point. I must hand it to Michael Cera for portraying one of the most annoying and unlikable characters I've ever seen on film. It's too bad his talents were not employed in a better story.

It makes me sad to think of all the great scripts lying around that never get produced into movies. Why does something this bad get to be seen on the screen? I wish I could get my rental fee back, plus damages for wasting my time and filling my very soul with feelings of abject disappointment. Maybe giving the viewer these feelings is the intention of this total bummer of a flick.

If you'd like to play a prank on your worst enemy, recommend this film!
