Headless horror fun
TheLittleSongbird4 June 2023
The Scooby Doo franchise has had a good run with having headless villains, with 'Scooby Doo Where are You's' "Haunted House Hang Up" and 'The Scooby Doo Show's' "The Headless Horseman of Halloween" immediately springing to mind. 'Scooby Doo and the Goblin King' also had a very memorable scene featuring the Headless Horseman. My first impressions of 'Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated's' "Attack of the Headless Horror" were very positive on first watch, loving almost everything about it before losing its way a little.

Recently rewatched the whole of 'Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated' (to me one of the best Scooby Doo shows and the best since 'The Scooby Doo Show') and the standard of almost all the episodes is so high. Really liked "Attack of the Headless Horror" on first watch, it still is a very well put together and high standard episode. Like first watch, almost everything is great about it and its only fault is very late on. Not one of the best episodes of Season 1 or of the show, but a very, very good one.

First and foremost, the animation has its usual atmosphere and slickness, loved the use of colour and the villain is especially well designed. It took me a while to get used to how the characters looked in the show overall, but there is no issue had with them now in any of the episodes. The music has energy and eeriness and the opening titles sequence is eye catching with a catchy theme tune. The voice acting is great, especially Matthew Lillard, gloriously deadpan Patrick Warburton and the voice work of the villain.

When it comes to the writing, "Attack of the Headless Horror" is a triumph and it is a near triumph when it comes to the story and atmosphere. The writing is chockful of funny moments, Sheriff Stone is an absolute hoot. The thought provoking intrigue in the ongoing mystery balances beautifully. The story is incredibly fun and atmosphere, while not one of the most eventful mysteries of the show it's not too thin and doesn't drag. The creepy vibe is also very strong throughout.

Especially with one of the scarier villains of the season and also on 'Mystery Incorporated'. The voice alone is enough to give one nightmares. The supporting characters are colourful and the gang are spot on, both individual character writing and team dynamic.

Only the over obviousness of the denouement lets the side down in a season that actually for the franchise had a surprising number of shockers.

In summary, very, very good. 8/10.

A great plot, writing, voice acting, animation etc etc. With a few bits I doubt they'd dare make today. But I like it all the same. I remember seeing it back when it came out and I liked it then and I still like it now - just as good as I remember it.
