i enjoy them all
subwmn8 April 2015
The movie was cute because it is the penguins. I saw the Madagascar movies and watch the penguins TV series. I liked it except for different voices for the movies and the TV series. The only constant voice and same character was skipper. The others looked different from the show. Another thing I do not like are the name innuendos. What point does it have? Just for laughs? I think they could have done with out that. It would have been nice if they would have tied it in with the TV series as they did a tie in for the Madagascar movies. How did they get all the gadgets for the TV series? They are supposed to be an elite squad, where are the gadgets?

Fun Bond villain adventure
SnoopyStyle4 April 2015
Skipper, Kowalski and Rico rescue an egg but they drift out to sea. The egg hatch into Private and the gang go off to adventures together. Ten years later, they break into Fort Knox to get the Cheezy dibbles from the vending machine. They are abducted by Doctor Octavius Brine who was Dave the octopus. Dave lost his fans at the various zoos to penguins and now plans to take revenge on them using the Medusa Serum. The penguins have to stop Dave with the help of the animal spy agency The North Wind.

The Penguins are the funniest thing in the Madagascar franchise. The core story is fun. It has a lot of great references. It takes cute unexpected turns and has great cartoon action. There are big laughs and funny throughout. I like it even better than the Madagascar movies.

Good spin off
kosmasp4 June 2015
I didn't think I would like this as much or that it would be and feel as good as it did. It's not easy with spin-offs, the characters are there, but can you make a movie with them that can hold up? Obviously you can, which is something I expected (and expect) from the Minions movie, but not really from the Penguins.

While it's a kids movie, it also has a lot to offer for adults to. Which every good kids movie is doing nowadays of course. The story is pretty thin, but we get a couple of new people involved and of course an "enemy" we have to engage with. The ending might feel like a letdown for some (to some more than to others), but overall the movie did achieve what it set out to do.

Light and breezy with consistent laughs.
Troy_Campbell2 January 2015
2015 kicks off with a stupendously silly but mostly amusing animated film that is best enjoyed with easy-to-please toddlers chuckling by your side. After stealing the limelight in the Madagascar trilogy, the awesome foursome get their own adventure, complete with globetrotting hijinks, high-flying acrobatics and extravagant escapes. Filled to the brim with physical comedy and written quips (a string of celebrity themed puns are hilarious), this spin off adheres to the franchise's humour-formula of quantity over quality, but is so light in tone it's hard to begrudge it. The eponymous flightless seabirds – Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private – are as intrepid, idiotic and cuddly as ever, but are arguably better suited to stealing scenes at second fiddle rather than leading from the front for a whole movie. There's an underpinning message – don't underestimate the little guy – that permeates throughout the swift runtime, building up to a stock standard finale that skimps on laughs in favour of a moral payoff. Penguins lacks the adorability of Paddington, the exhilaration of Big Hero 6, or the intelligence of either, yet remains a decent option for families looking to waste a couple of hours during the school break.

Much Better & Funnier Than The Other Madagascar Films
dfa12037430 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In all honesty, I had my reservations about watching a feature length movie involving the penguins from the Madagascar films because 1) I never really thought any of the Madagascar films were all that funny (apart from King Julien), and 2) I thought the penguins weren't as good as they could have been in those movies. So, when I saw that they had a movie of their own, I definitely thought that we were in for a bit of a boring film.

I'm glad to say that I was wrong, because the Penguins of Madagascar was actually a pretty enjoyable flick. I mean it wasn't an amazing film or anything, but it's definitely much better than what I thought it would be.

The humour is pretty constant all the way through, and it's not just from the slap-stick comedy that we're used to seeing when it comes to any of the Madagascar films either. A great deal of amusement comes from a lot of the dialogue (which is really well scripted) between Skipper, Rico, Private, and Kowalski, which in itself is great, but it gets better when Dave the octopus ("Nicolas! Cage them! Hugh! Jack! Man the battle stations!") and Classified enter the fray.

Some of the dialogue does fall a bit flat, but there are a lot of good little one-liners and bigger scenes with a couple of the best ones being where Skipper keeps interrupting Classified by munching on cheese dibbles, and where Dave is trying to use a web-cam (reminiscent to anyone whose grandparents have tried to use one). Even little scenes like Skipper slapping a baby squid (thinking it's an octopus) to get information from it and it starts to cry are well executed.

The voice cast who deliver these lines are all excellent as well, from Tom McGrath as Skipper to Benedict Cumberbatch & John Malkovich as Classified & Dave.

Penguins of Madagascar is definitely a fast-paced, wacky animation that never gets boring, and should keep you entertained & chuckling throughout.

A high one (you'll understand when you see the film) to all those involved.

An uneven film and could have been much better but has a lot of entertaining things
TheLittleSongbird14 December 2014
Penguins of Madagascar may be one of Dreamworks' weakest(Prince of Egypt, How to Train Your Dragon and Shrek it's not, it's better than Bee Movie and Shark Tale though) and is nowhere near as good as the wonderful TV series, but from the reviews here I was expecting it to be a waste of time but instead(personal opinion) got a very uneven but entertaining film. It is badly let down by the story, it started off delightfully but much of it was rather tired, formulaic and over-stretched(like an extended episode from the series), especially in the third act which was draggy and clichéd at points. It also tries to incorporate a lot of story strands other than being just an origin story which is commendable but it did make the film a little over-stuffed and lacking in focus. Pacing was an issue here, Penguins of Madagascar wasn't ever dull, in fact the problem was the opposite in that everything was so frantic that there were frequent points where it felt incredibly rushed and in serious need of a slowing down. Because the humour and storytelling came by so fast, you have little time to breathe and you are likely to find that you don't catch every gag and bit of dialogue or follow the story entirely.

The animation is very good this said, not the best there's ever been but the colours are bright and colourful, the backgrounds are detailed and smooth, the editing is tight and the characters move easily. The music score is very catchy and most of the voice acting is superb. Tom McGrath and Christopher Knights are excellent as Skipper and Private and provide the emotional heart that the film has, Peter Stormare is fun and Benedict Cumberbatch- as ever showing showing an ability to turn not so strong material to something more- brings distinguished class and witty comic timing to Classified. But it is John Malkovich who is especially good, he's brilliantly off the wall as the villain, being both hilarious and sinister, and has some of the best lines. Werner Herzog is also very entertaining as a documentary narrator sort of character. Two of the voice actors don't come off so well, Ken Jeong has very little to do and his voice doesn't really fit his character- I couldn't help being reminded of the voice he used to voice Kim-Ly in Turbo and it was jarring- and Chris Miller did sound bored and rather arrogant sounding as Kowalski.

In terms of characters, the penguins are entertaining enough but they do fare better as scene stealing supporting characters than the lead characters in a feature film and their personalities have been far more individual before, Private is very relatable actually but Kowalski comes across as an arrogant douche which was a turn off and Rico is bland. Of the rest of the characters, the most interesting of them is Dave/Dr. Brine, part of it is to do with Malkovich's voice acting, part of it is the clever character design and part of it is the writing. The rest however are one-dimensional and lacking in individuality, if I were to be asked which characters I would remember most it would be Private and Dave/Dr. Brine, but the others not so much. The script has a lot of parts where it works wonderfully but others where it falls flat, there are some smart wordplay, witty dialogue that would make one smile and some hilarious celebrity puns that adults will love(they will go over the heads of children however) but there are some jokes that do come over as contrived and like they were recycled from somewhere else. For instance Dave's name keeps getting forgotten, a running gag that was funny that was funny the first few times but got stale for the rest of them. The action comes by thick and fast and is enormous fun to watch, the pratfalls are very silly but look good and do amuse at all(children will enjoy them), particularly fun were the chase sequence in Venice and the final showdown.

All in all, could have been much better, Penguins of Madagascar is a very uneven film and is one of Dreamworks' weakest but it was an entertaining watch. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Wait I Thought This Was A Documentary?
BabelAlexandria21 April 2020
They couldn't resist a penguins spin-off, given the (unexpected?) success of the Madagascar trilogy (and perhaps also happy feet), but in my view, this movie falls flat. The penguins are best as comic sidekicks, not leads. On the other hand, the kiddos both enjoyed it much more than I did.

And, speaking of show-stealing animals: the octopus villain was too creepy! American pop culture seems to have a love-hate relationship with these eight-legged marine creatures right now - see the much more positive depiction in Finding Dorie. This means a use of the

laugh riot , go for it
inanisumeet19 March 2015
It is funny all the way , never a dull moment . They managed to sneak in touching moments too . These penguins are wily & go-getters . Nobody can mess with them . Kowalski is tech support , skipper is leader (obviously) , rico is worker & private is sincere eager follower . They can and do outwit everybody . I remember in 'madagascar 3' where skipper said 'you only get one chance at first impression' after hippo lady could not break the door . Some people are saying it as hard selling and by-product of successful 'madagascar' franchise . But , this is thoughtfully scripted . Full entertainment for family . Dialogues are glib and mocking .

Previews WRECKED a fun movie
jrodway29 November 2014
I would give the movie a 9 if you are seeing it someplace other than the theater. We had to endure 25 minutes - literally - of previews and some of them (in particular Pan) are NOT kid friendly. My 4 year old enjoys a movie and has no issues sitting through them. Before the movie had even started he was asking to go home. Parents around us were actually complaining out loud with every new preview (now that's a first). What made it worse was the movie starts a bit slowly. I thought we were in trouble and I basically had to insist that we stay.

The movie itself was surprisingly entertaining and funny. Both myself and my son laughed throughout (although at different parts). What was a really nice change is the "adult humor" wasn't completely based on sex like has been the trend on so many Disney and Pixar films as of late. Much of it was clever with fun references to other movies.

My four year old - who likes Madagascar - laughed and cheered. The bad guy wasn't too bad and there was enough action to keep everyone's attention. The movie did run a bit long but that was really due to the previews. My son got pretty restless near the end.

Who knew that penguins could be so enjoyable???

I would definitely recommend Penguins but NOT at the movie theater (which pains me to say). If you are a parent wait for the DVD or streaming. They really wrecked a fun movie going experience. Clearly the executives and marketers don't have the children that should be the target audience for this movie.

"Penguins" is full of witty humor, but a weak third act deflates what could have been a great movie
attackofthespaceturtles26 November 2014
When I first heard about this movie, I was thankful that Dreamworks chose to go this route instead of just giving us a Madagascar 4 (though at this point I won't be surprised if we see one sometime down the road) and rehashing what we have already seen for three movies. The Penguins offer a lot of potential. Unfortunately, while Penguins of Madagascar finally escapes the rehashed feeling of the Madagascar films with something new, it still proves to be underwhelming.

As the title suggest, the movie focuses on the four penguins from the Madagascar films, though it isn't necessary to have seen the other movies to understand this one. When the four penguins have a run-in with a new villain, Dave, they are forced to team up with another group of animal secret agents to stop Dave's evil plan.

It's a pretty straightforward plot up until the last bit (which I will talk about later). The film starts out fantastic. After a bit of back story the viewer is thrown straight into the action and it keeps up a nice fast pace. It is extremely entertaining to watch the action scenes unfold and the humor is top-notch. There are a lot of very clever jokes and a second viewing is probably required to catch everything. The voice acting is also top notch and I appreciate that they did not feel the need to rely on celebrities like many Dreamworks films do (the only big name was Benedict Cumberbatch, who also did a great job). For the first part of the film I was very entertained and began to think that this movie had surpassed my expectations.

But then, just like a balloon deflating, all of the fun, humor, and energy got sucked out in the third act. The energy was replaced by clichés and the clever humor from earlier was replaced with just downright weird jokes that didn't make any sense to me. For the last fifteen to twenty minutes the film just seems to drag, and by the time it was over all of the fun and excitement I had been feeling earlier was replaced by a "Eh, it was OK." I am quite disappointed that the writers could not keep up the fun feeling from the first half or give us something truly new.

While I appreciate Dreamworks trying to give us something a little different from the previous Madagascar films, this one just fell flat by the end. The kids will probably enjoy it and parents will have a few laughs at some of the jokes from the beginning of the film, but it lacks the creativity or emotion to leave an impact the way How to Train Your Dragon 2 did.

It's amazing!
flexsorproduction22 July 2015
This is masterpiece. Being 20 years old guy, i still like to watching this cartoon. Sometimes my 40 y\o father when have a time watch this. It's really funny cartoon where are different stories, like about love, about friendship, about action, about moral values! Each character full of their life way!

Skipper-Team leader. Always keeps team in healthy shape. Always says what to do and how to do. He use his "King slap" to calm down members of team. It's really funny and by this he emphasizes his leadership. And it is ridiculous in my opinion, is when he says the name of the operation. "Okay guys, we start operation "******" Let's go!" (c) Skipper. Ahahahah :D

Kowalski-Brain of team. He always have plan. Always! True scientist! His inventions strange but very interesting :D Scientist's language very funny. When Kowalski start to explain something, it's line OMG, wut :DD Which makes it really funny :) In many movies\cartoons in every team must be clever guy, i think in penguins it depicts the most fun, cool and exciting!

Rico-"Mad KABOOM Guy" I gave him this name :) Very strange one, which makes him very special in this team. He can only speak a few words, and the rest he can only make sounds. That's what makes him special :) Really funny guy :) YOu should watch him and u will understand me :))

Private-cutie of team. Very friendly one :) He always finds in people's kindness and honesty (with Skipper all the way around). When Skipper see potential enemy, Private meanwhile trying friend with him :) Hahaha :) So cute one ;)

What about another guys in Zoo. I just wanna say Dreamworks have very good taste!!! All personage are amazing! I cant imagine them in another taste's! Keep doing Dreamworks! I love you!!

10\10!!!!! <3

PS. Sorry for low English :)

Good entertainment!!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Penguins of Madagascar is a good movie I watched it last night on my phone it was amazing!!!

It has got a good Comedy sequences and the penguins were just good especially "Skipper".

The story was normal but still I liked it I was surprised by its shows under-performing in North America but it is hit in Overseas so I am happy.

It has earned above 300 million on its 132 million budget so it is good so I request the makers to make a sequel of this.

The "North Wind" agency "Villian Doctor braine" were also good and the sequence they turned Penguins into monsters and all.

Overall it was fun good movie.

Franchise Killer
lorenyager6 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
While everyone else in the world adores penguins, there is one group out to destroy their cuteness. Their name is...

Dreamworks Studios.

Even though skipper, kowalski, rico, and private are amazing characters, combining the elements of penguin cuteness, sophisticated humor, and slapstick comedy, this movie certainly did not uphold those previous character elements.

The first part of the movie is a nice introduction to how the penguins became who they are now and gave a nice backstory. However, the rest of the movie (to put it lightly), sucked REALLY bad. This was easily the worst Dreamworks movie I had ever seen. The main villain looks like a cartoon version of a Tim Burton character, the plot is meaningless, and the jokes are few and far between.

They could have made countless jokes about fracking, global warming, oil spills and the countless other environmental problems we have today. They could've gotten morgan freeman to do the introduction, they could have had a few cameos from the other madagascar characters.

(SPOLIER SENTENCE NEXT)

But instead, the main villain was an octopus that was jealous of how cute the penguins were so he captured them all and tried to turn them ugly. So they partnered up with four one dimensional secret agent characters who somehow have millions of dollars. Care to elaborate on those characters? Can we have an introduction? Maybe just something? No? Okay.

I'm sorry but what a waste. Seriously the transformers movies have a comparable plot. Wait did I just say that?

Sparknotes: Do yourself a favor and don't go see this movie. It honestly spoiled the Madagascar franchise for me.

SERIOUSLY IT SUCKED

Films on Top of Films
tedg3 December 2014
Some reviews you will read may remark on how self-aware this is as a movie. The target audience of kids won't get any of the movie references, but some of their parents will. It is pretty obvious that a strategy of the producers was to satisfy the two audiences with different techniques. For the kids, well there is kid stuff: some small drama and lots of motion. The adults are assumed to be fully aware through the whole experience that they are in a film they cannot engage with.

So there is a layer of references that sometimes are jokes but mostly constitute the narrative of: "we know you are there and think this movie is silly, so here is some movie silliness for you." Someone somewhere likely has a list of these.

The one that I really appreciated is the biggest, earliest one, and surely the deepest.

The movie is framed first as a documentary leading to an origin episode.

All of us have suffered through Morgan Freeman's avuncular treacle about the wonder of penguins. Here we have 'documentarian' Werner Herzog aping the same thing, but not to celebrate the wonder of it, but the desperate cruelty.

Now the thing is that Herzog at one time mattered. He changed dreams. He risked everything for his art and gave us worlds we now assume were always there. Now he is content to be a modern Robert Ripley with a minor career in parodying himself.

Because his appearance is the first of the adult layer of the movie, one would expect it to be gently silly. All the movie references that follow are. But no, someone who knows about these things decided that the creation of this folded adult narrative had to be bold, obvious and intelligent. I can just imagine him trying to sell this to the corporate story executives as a way to match Pixar in narrative sophistication.

Well, it worked for me. While a two and three year old sat next to me, surfing the kiddie layer, I actually watched this gently residing in an adult film lover's layer. It wasn't particularly satisfying, but I didn't get sick. The last attempt for me at watching with the kids was "The Lego Movie." We had to leave, in part because it decided to have one layer, one narrative that satisfied adults and kids. The requirement for in-narrative irony was too much to let the movie breath.

Penguins of Madagascar is next to what i expected,i loved it and hoping for part 2
shakilabuzafor08 March 2015
Well,we all have been waiting for this film for a long time and i must say it was worth waiting for. When we first saw the MADAGASCAR movie we were very much curious about these penguins. They were like the Minions of Madagascar,we loved their intelligent,straight-forward and funny behavior a lot.yeah,of course thats the reason they made this film. Now,lets talk about this film.from the beginning of this film it was full of actions, brilliant funny dialogs.Usually we don't expect animation films to be that kind of action packed, but this film done a beautiful work on that because between actions there were clever and hilarious commands of skipper.Besides fun and actions we saw emotions a little but it was pretty good. And the villain's plot was good but it could've been better.I didn't kinda like him because it didn't felt like super villain,Dave(Dr. Octavius Brine) needed a little more evilness. The north wind team was a good plot to give this movie a serious look.Ending was pretty awesome too with all the actions and strategies especially the one when skipper throw chip to press the button. The look of Private was still cute and cuddly after reversion process (yeah, private returned to his original look later).Dreamworks done a fabulous job on this movie and i admire it very much.

Very cute film, heeheh

Warning: Spoilers
Film was fantastic. Great comedy was ensured. Plot was simple. The film started off with how the penguins Kowalski(Miller), Private(Knights), Skipper(McGrath) and Rico(Vernon) came to be. Most adorable film if u ask me. Awwwww.

Plot continues they encounter Dr. Octavius Brine(aka Dave(Malkovich) the Octopus). While the encounter ensues they meet North Wind. Again too adorable. North Wind consists of Wolf(aka Classified(Cumberbatch), 2 owls(Eva(Mahendru), Short Fuse(Keong) and a Bear(Corporal(Stormore). North Wind are also trying to run after Dave the octopus. The reason why Dave is running after the penguins is that he is trying to get the penguins to recall. After failing to recall, Dave recalls it for them. Dave and the Penguins are in a New York Zoo. However the Penguins steal the show on a constant basis. No matter what zoo they go to, they still manage to steal the show.

70% entertaining, 30% disappointing (no spoilers in the review)
RemusGrey9 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
You read the title correctly (so no need to worry about spoilers). These adorable penguins now star in their very own movie. It's a kind of film like the MCU solo entries where their events take place after a movie but are not a sequel nor a spin-off. But there is one thing different from the Penguins of Madagascar and MCU solo entries. Penguins of Madagascar is a movie that felt like Despicable Me 2 all over again. I don't know which one is copied among Shrek (Puss in Boots), Madagascar (Penguins of Madagascar), and Despicable Me (Minions), but I find this movie 30% disappointing. The spin-off idea felt like I was watching the Minion movie, or even a kid-friendly MCU entry. Yet this film is 70% entertaining! It's not the best Dreamworks has done. It's not even the worst. It's average, not good, not bad. Those funny scenes still make me laugh up to now. These penguins are still memorable, too. The pun humor idea feels like a new thing from Dreamworks. The humor in Dreamworks movies may be the only new thing and nothing else, but they still entertain! Remember, if any Dreamworks movies lack better humor, you can always remember the storytelling. This one is not gonna part of the best Dreamworks movie bookshelf, but you will still be entertained. Benedict Cumberbatch and John Malkovich's octopus and husky voice, funny jokes, and entertaining spin-off story makes this entertaining! But the movie still leaving a 30% disappointment rating. Nevermind. This movie is still entertaining anyway.

"Cute and Cuddly, Boys, Cute and Cuddly!"
www-thecheetah1071 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The Penguins of Madagascar is the follow up of the events of Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted -- in the four lovable & hilarious penguin's perspective. And does it succeed? The answer is it improves and deteriorates from sequence to sequence, but stands out in a fine fashion.

The first 2/3rd's of this spin off flick will most likely leave you bursting with laughter or chuckling for the least bit. The characters, excluding the four flightless protagonists (which are awesome without doubts) are great in their own way, whether they have great character development or just straight out funny and likable.

However, as fun as it is, the final sequence in New York City is what makes a standing out movie break a few ranks. It leaves you confused and is the worst and most boring part of the theatrical feature.

P.S - You might miss it, but there is a running gag in the film where the villain (Dave/Dr. Octavius Brine)'s henchmen are being called out coincidentally named after celebrities and the said action would follow the celebrity's surname.

Pros: Fantastic Characters, Humor & Celebrity references

Cons: Dull-witted finale

Awesome, just awesome
buly_boy20072 June 2015
Awesome, just awesome movie.

I don't know how to say this but it is a while since I've last seen a movie that made me laugh freely.

It is a complete movie from my point of view because it's understandable for children and it has plenty of jokes for grown ups. And I enjoyed a lot the jokes related to celebrities names like: Charlize Theron, Kevin Bacon, Hugh Jackman and others I don't remember right now.

It has plenty of surprises and it is after all a comedy wrapped into an animation movie that totally deserves the time spend watching it. I gave it a 9, maybe a little bit higher that rated but in my opinion you just have to see this :D.

Different and lower than its predecessors, but still funny
sumanmondal9526 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
DreamWorks' Madagascar series continues with its latest release penguins of Madagascar. But the actual flavor of Madagascar series is missing in this movie as unlike the previous films the lead characters Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman totally swiped out here and we can get that image as the name of the movie tells that it is all about that four tiny penguins. Yes, it is skipper, Kowalski, Rico and private are here to freshen up viewers mind. The film starts with the three baby penguins skipper, Kowalski and Rico found a rolling egg and their enormous effort to save the egg. They got succeed in their job and they found private from the egg. As private did not have any family the three penguins welcomed him in their team. Then they got some huge troubles as they were trapped under the plan of squid Dave who is personally known to world as a human Dr. Octavius. But somehow they managed to escape from him and his squid army initially and met another great team named North Wind that has a wolf as their captain and a bear, an owl and a seal as their member. Dave's intention was to make a world without penguins by turning them ugly monsters as he got ripped out from zoo as the penguins got famous for their cuteness. He really missed kids' adoration and suddenly got jealous of the penguins. Team North Wind was there to save the innocent penguins and capture Dr. Octavius to stop his fatal activities. The four penguins were saved by team North Wind and they were meant to help them as they showed some details data of Dr. Octavius. But they didn't match with them as the skipper and the leading wolf have various dissimilarities in the plans to stop Dave. Finally they got separated in Shanghai and started their mission on their own way. Meanwhile, Dave and his army stole penguins from all over the world except shanghai and they were in the plan to steal the famous mermaid penguins from Shanghai. Skipper and the penguins got failed in their plan and the squid army got private too. Then the rest 3 penguins decided to join in the North wind team and they would attack Dave together. But they all got captured including team north wind by Dave. Dave already turned all the penguins into monsters except private as he managed to run away from the squids. Then private saved the north wind team and they got escaped from them. At the end when Dr. Octavius told the whole world he managed to save all the penguins he got admiration from people. But when he released all the scary penguins all the people ran away from them. Finally private turned out the hero and he changed them in their normal look by sacrificing him and Dave too got shrink and again got love from kids for his cuteness. But private got a monster look and then another character from previous Madagascar king Julian was introduced in the film to get private his old look back with his pet in his funny way. No doubt, the film has the potential to make you laugh through the whole movie. The characters are really funny and they did their job. But as a film it lacks a good story and the new characters were not enough to remove the image of the missing characters from our mind. So, definitely we missed Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman in this movie and we need them back in future Madagascar. And the final thing, the theory of turning some animals into freaking monsters is already shown to us by despicable me 2.

Mediocre Movie. A waste of potential
keshav-woottum3 January 2015
There's an old saying that says, "If you forget your past, you doom the future." This is what unfortunately happened to this movie. The plot is weak and disrespects most of what has been stated for the penguins in the first movie and the television series. Now i know some would say that the series are supposedly set in an alternate history but the series followed best the penguin characters from the first movie. The Penguins of Madagascar had great potential but wasted it. The villain was weak and pathetic compared to villains introduced in the series.

However, this movie packs some fun dialogs and good laughs (for the first half of the movie) and is also a good family fun. This movie is forgettable and frankly not one i will want to see again anytime soon. It wasted a lot of potential but its OK if you forget the previous movies and not take too seriously the way they changed the penguins characters (I elaborate on this below).

Possible SPOILER incoming so SPOILER ALERT!!!

In the first movie, the penguins made clear that they had never been to Antarctica, and yet in this movie the penguins are shown to be there! Additionally the penguins characters are mysteriously changed! Skipper for example is now some sort of overly proud fatherly like character for private. He also speaks a lot which he never did (He was always brisk). I also thought he was goofy in some actions scenes (which he never was in the movies and series)He has also always been stern and reckless (he isn't anymore!!) Kowalski no longer provides us with inventions or theories, Rico is no longer as sadistic as he was and Private is suddenly a lot less naive and timid.

These are most unforgivable mistakes that this movie makes. The penguins so brisk/cute/cold/sadistic manners is what made them so popular and such loved characters. This movie breaks that. And the villain? A most pathetic one!! Not all all in the league of villains like Dr Blowhole or Hans the Puffin.

So much potential wasted!! I would rather pretend this movie never happened.

Nicholas! Cage them!

Although the film wasn't really needed, it is absolutely brilliant. Benedict Cumberbatch is the best part of this movie. His acting is brilliant as always. I wouldn't mind seeing a spin-off about the origins of the North Wind, the spy agency that his character runs. It would be awesome. I was a bit hesitant that this would kill the Madagascar franchise like Shrek Forever After killed the Shrek franchise but I gave it a chance and it was great. Sorry, Pixar but I think Dreamworks will eventually knock you off the top spot as the best animation studio. I loved everything about this movie. It's perfect. Grade: A+ 10/10 5/5 stars

Fun spin-off on it's own, still the weakest one.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm a huge fan of Madagascar, and of course I love the penguins! And I'm not the only one who thinks so. They even got their own tv show on Nickelodeon back in 2008. And a movie was only a matter of time. Originally intended for a March 2015 release for the franchise's tenth anniversary, was pushed back to November 2014, meanwhile, another Dreamworks movie Home switched dates and got delayed til 2015. Sadly, due to it's unexpected release, it became a box office bomb. As for me, I remember seeing it in cinemas when it came out, and I've recently rewatched it, just to refresh my memories about it.

So, like I said, the main characters of this film are the titular penguins. In the beginning, we see their origins and how they became the famous quartet that we all know and love today. At first I thought that this was a prequel movie, but it's actually a follow up to the third movie. The real main plot is about the antarctican birds being stolen by an octopus mad scientist named Dave, and since the quartet know what his plans are, they will try anything to stop the villain. However, there's also a super agent team called the north wind, who are advanced with futuristic technology. At first, it may seem like they are rivals, but they had to combine their strengths and to save Private.

What's weird is that the story itself is similar to the second despicable me movie, which was released a year prior. Sure, it's not a complete rip off and it does have some original elements, but there are still alike. Because both have an antagonist that wants to steal some cute creatures, use a serum that turns them into crazy mutants, and a super agent team, who have a plan to stop the villain. Speaking of which, it has more elements from that franchise with technology and serums, rather than Madagascar. Which seems to be weird, since the trilogy was more down to Earth, and this one was more sci-fi like.

The humour was okay, not laugh out loud, but there were some moments where I laughed or chuckled. But the action scenes were the best out of all of the films. Thanks to it's great animation, it's entertaining and lively, especially if you watch that film in 3D and during flying scenes. I also liked how the characters went to some new locations, like Shanghai, Venice and a desert.

Lastly, there is a subplot about Private, who wants to find purpose in his life, he wants to be useful for his teammates. I actually felt bad for Private in the beginning, however, after what he did in the end, made me cheer for the youngest member. Honestly, he had the best character development out of all of them. The other members barely changed, with Skipper still being the leader, Kowalski being the brains, and Rico being the crazy one, who can swallow anything. They were okay, although, could've been so much better. As for the new cast, they aren't exactly anything special. Classified is the sophisticated leader, who cares about the mission a lot, and outsmarts Skipper, I actually think he has a lot of potential, and his voice actor Benedict Cumberbatch does provide a great performance. But since he's still a little bit generic. Other members include Eva, the smart owl, Short Fuse, the weapon expert seal and Corporal, the kind hearted polar bear, who adores penguins. I do kinda wish that they had some prequel mini series, that would explain more about them, other than just that they save poor animals from Dave. Speaking of which, the octopus is actually the most memorable character in this movie because of 2 reasons. First of all, the backstory of why Dave became evil, is actually touching. He was sadly ignored when penguins stole the attention away, and because of that, he created a special medusa serum, that turns anyone into a mindless mutant, similar to purple minions in despicable me 2. Another reason to why he's interesting, it's because he's a shapeshifter. He can transform into a human alter ego named Dr Octavius Brine, which is actually unique and different, but sadly, there's no explanation on why he can transform, leading to the fans to come up with theories. I like how this character was brought to life and definitely the reason why I still remember this film.

Not a must watch, since the main trilogy was better and more enjoyable, I would still prefer Penguins of Madagascar any day over Minions, thanks to it's decent plot, great action scenes, characters that have potential to be awesome and colorful animation. Still, it doesn't feel like Madagascar anymore with it's futuristic tone and weird ideas, which could be a turn off for some fans. I can still recommend this film to kids and fans of the penguins, I'm pretty sure they'll have a great time with it. Others can skip the film, since it's not really a follow up to Madagascar, and rather wants to be it's own thing. Even though I think it's the weakest film of the 4, I had a decent time with it.

Penguins are fun, cute and manic
jaywensley200428 November 2014
While taking too much from the "Despicable Me" franchise, "Penguins of Madagascar" is fun, funny and so maniacally paced that viewers will likely feel they got their ticket-price's worth.

But that doesn't excuse the fact that its a mediocre movie.

"Penguins" belongs in the mid-summer dross of quick-release films that count on built in audiences. This is a TV movie that got a release date during the Holiday season when family fare is compelling. This movie will likely result in a TV show (Penguins are cute! is the literal raison d'etre for this movie) but the movie is not worthy of cinematic release.

The story is too, too, familiar, the characters are rote, and the script's best gags are re-cycled. The best use of "Penguins" is to see if your eldest child is capable of riding herd on their sibs for the two hour running time of this film and its trailers. Sit a few rows behind your brood, smile at the familiar gags, then take the family out for ice cream. Chocolate may be the best compensation for sitting through "Penguins of Madagascar."

An attention deficit mess
Gordon-116 January 2015
This film tells the story of four penguins saving their species from an evil octopus, who seeks revenge because the penguins got all the love from zoo visitors.

"Penguins of Madagascar" has a contrived plot, and yet watching it gives me the feeling of having attention deficit disorder. There is so much going on, every thing is very brief and the focus changes all the time. Yet, there is little important plot lying in all the chaotic action. There are a few one liner jokes that made me giggle, but there is nothing that makes me laugh out loud. The famous actor sound alike sentences is funny the first time round, but it gets tiresome quickly. I was bored and disappointed by it.
