An award for art is ridiculous!
RainDogJr21 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I might be going a bit too far, but I think this episode is down there with that "Jakovasaurs" one from the early years as one of worst SOUTH PARK episodes ever! There are not many *bad* ones for my money (I don't think I have made a bad review for a SOUTH PARK here, aside of the one for that Jakovasaurs thing), hell, "Funnybot" is not terrible and it has the enough stuff for a 6 out of 10 rating. Nevertheless, I didn't laugh hard with any of its elements.

The main point of the episode is actually very clever; I remember a scene from PEARL JAM TWENTY in which one of the Pearl Jam members (Jeff Ament, for those who know of what I'm talking about!) makes a great comment on the Grammy awards: he basically says that an award for art is RIDICULOUS. And the main point that "Funnybot" says is that, only that is about an award for comedy (later you find out thanks to the commentary track that it was a sort of inside joke since SOUTH PARK had just been nominated for a comedy award hosted by Comedy Central! They thought it was certainly pretty damn ridiculous).

The other main thing is about Tyler Perry; now, I don't really know who this guy is but he sure gets the "South Park treatment" really well – I found amusing the jokes on Perry and the conclusion that he got is absolutely the funniest thing from "Funnybot". There's also an interesting element that made think in Charles Chaplin's THE GREAT DICTATOR. I mean, one of the early jokes from this episode is that the Germans are the least funny people of the planet, so at one point we have Trey Parker speaking German. Was it real German or a THE GREAT DICTATOR kind of thing? Certainly Parker could have go for that Chaplin thing and if he did go for it, well, it wasn't really funny anyway. Oh, and I forgot to write about the character named Funnybot (a German robot)… I guess I forgot to do it because it wasn't very funny.

PS: there's a scene in which I thought Jay Leno was going to kill Kenny! Could have been some crazy stuff.

South Park has lost it's comedy
Ladida4557 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
South Park has been a great comedy series about several year, but i get the clue that since the 15th season the authors don't have any good ideas. This episode wasn't funny and had just a few little jokes.

I am a native German and can say that the "german" they speak in this episode isn't at least a language. Sometimes you can't hardly understand what they want to tell you.

This episode looks like a filler-one which hasn't a clear and related history background or reference like e.g. "The Day The Internet Stood Still".

This episode was one of the worst i have seen in the history of South Park.

SERIOUSLY?!?
jimel9815 July 2022
I just rewatched this episode and the few reviews don't seem happy with it. SERIOUSLY? This episode has everything South Park has become famous for. They insult famous people, an entire nation and Cartman is in full obnoxiously hilarious form.

The jokes told by the Germans are so unfunny, they're a riot. This is, as are almost all South Park episodes, comedy Gold.

But is EVERY episode Gold? Nah, some achieve Silver and now and then a Bronze, but I've never seen one that failed. Those who see an episode or two that don't impress THEM, and immediately start lamenting the demise of ANY show, should lighten up. Of course TV executives have retooled shows, only to murder them, but an individual episode (or maybe even 2 or 3) that doesn't work for you, is NO indication of a show being on its way out or an indication that the makers have lost their touch. Don't take the reviews of the cranks to heart, Watch and judge for yourself.

Terrible
harmen5385 May 2011
I can't believe it. I laughed once during this episode.

The episode began not as quite as I expected, with Jimmy being the main character. The comedy award-thingy was not funny at all. I'm not able to see how they were thinking this was gonna be funny. Then the Germans, Japanese and the Eskimos come into the picture. They could have made sooo much jokes with this! But then instead they chose for the Germans, and then totally ignore ALL the jokes you can make about the Germans, and they just ignore the Japanese and the Eskimos! Come on guys! Then they make one joke about Angela Merkel (that was my smile), and that was the highlight of the episode. From that point on, I began to question my sense of humor. Just like that time Cartman lost his sense of humor. But that was funny. This episode was not.

I wasted 21 minutes of my life. All I could think was how the f*** did they think funnybot would be funny? Killing a lot of people and then joking about it? How's that funny guys?

I actually think they were trying to do a parody of a really lame south park episode or something... which did not work at all. It was so incredibly low.

I'm disappointed Trey Parker, sir. HUMANCENTiPAD did not make any sense (an iPod stuck to somebody's head and 3 bodies later it gives you an e- mail?), and this was just terrible.

Thank you, but no thanks.

Sorry

Out of Shock & Awe
tsbrownie9 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Seems they've fallen prey to their own past success with the shock and awe formula. The "make it more outrageous / uncomfortable each show" thing is getting predictable and just plain stale. They need to do some break-thru comedy again and find a new vein to mine. This show depends on the German stereotype that is only relevant to the last generation, some homage to Dr. Who (again kinda last gen.), a boring award show parity (not sure which they are making fun of), some twisted scifi logic applied to comedy and some other things that escape me now. Also instead of playing on one socially awkward issue they are now using "piling on" in order to make up in quantity what is lacking in quality.
