Entertaining, but desperate editing tries why to hard, to make it more exciting, than it is
ejvind7629 December 2013
An interesting (although shallow) look, into the production of Moonshine. Although there is a lot of talk about the heritage and dying art of making moonshine, it's obviously the (repeatably labeled 'TAX FREE') money, that is the primary motivation for the moonshiners involved.

The shows strongest asset, is its many likable personalities. However the desperately bad attempts by the producers, to edit the show into suggesting, that the moonshiners are constantly on the verge of being caught by the police, really sticks out and make the show seem more like another bad run of the mill reality show, rather than what it could and should be: A honest depiction of the life and challenges, of modern day moonshiners.

Interesting characters but problems with repetition & fear of the law.

You come to really like some of these guys. The problem is that they keep trying to change things up because the show has run so long. Every moonshine season they can't be doing the same thing they did the last season. They honestly come from moonshine ancestors. I really don't like it when they act like they're afraid of "the law" since they have permission from authorities to film the show. I guess they could be trying to show how things were. As an aside, the story of Popcorn Sutton is interesting. There's a lot more to it than they show. The guy says I'd rather be dead than go to prison. I've seen it in my work. It's not really unusual.

This is how we make the moonshine.

Entertaining and full of good information. To argue if this show is real or not is like arguing if rastlin' is real. For the guy who left a review about discovery channel promoting illegal activity and dumbing down audiences. All I can say is if you think it should be illegal for anyone to make themselves something to drink, well I guess the government has done their job at brainwashing you.

Decent but has flaws
ResalovsIzzy2 July 2023
Most reviews point out the tiresome misleading exaggerations and lies. My complaint is whenever one of them gets hurt, they carry on about paying "Doctor Bills". We don't have debtor prisons, even in the South, so please stop.

Tks We know how much they get paid per episode; so whining about Dr bills right out of the gate of an injury is borderline fraud and a slap in the face to the truly impoverished and disabled trying to live off of average 1700.00 a month. I do like that the editors stay away from politics.

It has been a couple of seasons since I last saw a pet. Maybe bring in a puppy or 2.

Excellent Show

Moonshiners is a feel good show. No hard - no foul. Year ahead of all of the other reality shows which are pointless and trivial.

Not real
bdfnjtgfkr26 December 2023
Even though the federal government asked them to put a disclaimer up, the producers refused to, this show is not real, these are not real moonshiners, and why would they fear the law, everything they are doing is overseen by the local and federal authorities, so why put something out there like this giving people ideas, and going out and starting their own moonshine buisness. Even the characters are fake, none of them use their real names, the locations are bogus, and the whole lets look for a spot to put our new still at, and start making some more moonshine, why is this garbage allowed to be put on the air.

Moonshining was a way of life in America at one time! It's part of this great country's history! Entertaining show, I love it!

FAKE

Dumbest show ever. Why promote illegal activity. Dumbing down America. Discovery should be ashamed of themselves. Proves we are now one step closer to Idiocracy.

If you do not live in this area I guess it is hard to follow
kballew-3889312 January 2019
People in these areas still carry on this tradition and this show tells of some of the problems that exist. Sure moonshine is now available in liquor stores but are no comparison to the hill variety. These guys are not actor's like some of the other so called reality shows. If anyone thinks this is easy give it a go. They could be in a pawn shop and bring in a bunch of so called experts and then pay about a third of what stuff is worst Maybe the guys could dress in womans clothes and get into a drag race. This is a good show that shows what things use to be like and still is in parts of the country.

I love to drink it!
bigdonnieazd8 February 2021
My daily consumption is one large drink. My moonshine is made from grapes. I've only seen it done once on the show. I've seen quite a number of stills. Since I'm sure it's authentic I'll say watch the series and learn too!!

Great show
wellerwilliam-0757631 March 2022
I love the show. But we all know they are legal distillers. Stop trying to ham it up like they are illegal distillers. The show is good enough without the editors trying to make it something it isn't.

Perilously close to jumping the shark
jkimble-113 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched this show since the first episode. I mostly watch because it's mindless entertainment with a cast of characters that are very likable. However, as is often the case with "reality" shows the fact it is scripted and not actual reality becomes very apparent at some point.

For example: The contrived and overly dramatized feud between Richard and Mike has crossed the line over into pure make believe. It's a borderline "professional wrestling" type storyline at this point. So much of what is shown is obviously faked it's become laughable. The finale that had Kelly call Mike and lead him to the crushed still in Mike's driveway that could have in no way ended up in that shape from the building being pulled down is a perfect example. The pile of crushed copper was probably the still Richard collapsed earlier in the season and Kelly just folded it up good with his excavator. The cloak and dagger sneaking around in the dark pretending the lights on the cameras recording the show wouldn't stand out like a beacon is ridiculous.

The end of the season summit was just the icing on the cake of ridiculousness with Mike and Richard verbally sparring at the table. What was once a very good show is about to slide down a slippery slope if they don't stop with all the faked drama.

Illegal Distilling My Left Foot...LOL!
AudioFileZ10 March 2024
We all know it's scripted. No one could pay off enough law enforcement & politicians to do this when you're taunting them weekly on national TV. But, you know, it really doesn't matter. These characters are pretty true to the type of renegades who actually have done this for a well over a century. They build authentic stills and add some zany creativity in the mix. I really find it funny when they're selling this stuff for top prices when you can go now to any legal liquor store and buy authentic moonshine for not very much more. People always will want what someone tells them they can't have and this whole show masterfully taps into that ethos. It's the characters though that put this show over-the-top. Well done for entertainment purposes.

Sore loser
dionysiuswill15 June 2023
All I can say is that you got a couple sore losers on there. Mike and Jerry can't handle a little healthy competition no Mike has to go and destroy someone still that's their livelihood who cares if they're on your turf make some better moonshine and then they buy yours. All I can say Mike is that your insecure little girl . I would expect this from Mike but not I cannot even watch the show because it pisses me off I hope somebody teaches you to a lesson that you never forget. I hope Richard has plans for you and I'm pretty sure he does . I hope that Digger and Mark help them get revenge on you. I really hope you take precautions because I have a feeling Richard's going to come out in a full revenge and I hope he does. You guys need to learn how to make your own moonshine better and then you wouldn't have this problem..

What happened?
debragutowski28 April 2022
What happened to the original idea behind moonshiners? All the other spin offs are not good. Boring, silly and totally scripted. The episode with the confederate is ridiculous. Please return to the original show with new episodes asap.
