Only Character....But Could Have Advanced the Plot
Hitchcoc17 January 2017
I guess we need to get to know Holder and Linden, but it would be better through bits and pieces of discovery. It's almost like they decided to completely ignore Rosie's murder and go on the sidetrack. Jack takes off and the entire episode involves a sort of combat between the two principle characters. I guess if you know there are going to be four years from the start, you can afford the luxury of an episode like this. My issue with this episode is that it cheats us of significant events that have been boiling away. We get no follow-up on anything until the last thirty seconds. I do admit that this is an odd couple who are trying to survive one another, but for me, Jack is not very interesting. He is underdeveloped as a character and seems in the way. Oh, one other thing. I know we're talking Seattle, but does it ever stop raining. I'm going to need windshield wipers for my TV.

Brilliant episode!

The Killing is an intriguing show, but I wouldn't say that any episode of it has been brilliant and has achieved real greatness... until now.

This episode benefits that it's a character-episode. We finally get to really dig into both Linden and holder. This episode reminds me of Mad Men's "The Suitcase" and Breaking Bad's "Fly" (which both stand as some of their respective show's bests). Some may call this episode slow-paced, but in all honesty, it stands apart proudly. If the show was like this every week then it would be great. For now, this will do though. Also, Mireille Enos has proved that she is a force to be reckoned with.

It's all about the characters!

Warning: Spoilers
Taking a detour from the quest of finding Rosie's murderer this episode follows Detective Linden on the quest to find her missing son. Her partner decides to help her and they start searching the whole city in order to find her missing kid.

This episode abandons Rosie until the ending scenes.Instead it's an episode entirely focused on Linden and the relationship between her and her partner, Stephen Holder. It demonstrates their differences and similarities and their distinct points of view. But for me the best thing on this episode is that it feels not like a cheap filler to the main story but like an analysis on the character's behaviors and weaknesses. I really enjoyed the part when Stephen teases Linden because she lacks the ability to care for her son and the quarrel that ensues. What makes a smart and caring woman a negligent parent, her character or is it something else that, being in the foster home system, she hasn't learned from her parents herself? The scenario leaves these things open showcasing the question, not the answer, which I applaud. Another thing I loved is that though Holder sacrifices some of his personal relationships for his partner's sake (brave thing given the possibility of not seeing her again after the case closes) he still remains strong and true to his moral code. He is a man who does not care about other people's opinions he just creates his own system of values and sticks to it.

In summary though during the episode I missed Darren Richmond (by far my favorite character on the whole show) I really liked the way the whole thing was structured. This is TV as it should be every time, it just doesn't get any better!

Pointless

Warning: Spoilers
"The Killing" always has been a poor substitute for "Forbrydelsen", but this episode was where it finally did what it's been threatening to do from the start and tipped off the edge and plunged into the abyss of obscurity.

There was no advancement of the plot, there was no added depth to the characters. If the broadcaster forgot to broadcast it you wouldn't know it was missing. In short, it gave the impression that the producers were contracted to deliver 13 episodes but only had enough plot for 12. Never mind not returning for series 2, I really don't see the function in returning for the end of series 1. All hail the Danes, at least they knew what they were doing.

Just Terrible.

Warning: Spoilers
That name wasn't a friend but the name of a ferry that goes to an island. Sarah remembered the emblem of a casino on the island from Rosie's necklace. It was Native American territory so it was hard to have a search warrant so they both tried to find his missing son. Nothing much happened but I got to know about them. She grew up in foster homes and he was a meth addict. He turned up eventually.
