This year’s BFI Flare, London’s Lgbtiq+ Film Festival, announced their full programme. BFI Flare celebrates queer-identified film and filmmakers, especially those based in the UK. With special events, club nights, and of course film screenings, this year’s “hug”-themed festival welcomes visitors and attendees to embrace all identities and intimacies alike.
While most titles in this year’s BFI Flare line-up are from the Us and UK, we’ve picked out the Asian films – feature and shorts alike. BFI Flare will take place at BFI Southbank from March 18-19.

BBC One has ordered a TV series based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. Here's why TV should fare better than previous adaptations...
In 2007 New Line Cinema produced The Golden Compass. It was planned as the first in a trilogy, with the hope that it would provide a similar motion picture event to the studio's Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Instead, it nearly killed the studio. We looked at what went wrong with the movie in an earlier article: a tale of studio interference, patronising the audience, and not committing sufficiently to a story.
Now New Line has returned to the source material, and this time hopes are high. It was announced yesterday that Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter's newly formed Bad Wolf production company would be working with New Line to produce an adaptation for BBC One. Considering one of the problems with the...

Anyone who had the pleasure of witnessing Professor Brian Cox try to answer some of the many questions behind ‘ The Science Of Doctor Who’ could have been forgiven for thinking to themselves that old Coxy would make an excellent Thirteenth Doctor.
If you did, we salute you, and here are just some of many, many reasons the former D-Ream keyboard player and telly science institution could be an inspired choice at the helm of the Tardis once Peter Capaldi exits. Not that he won’t be brilliant, it’s just, well, you saw how enthusiastic he got over Michael Faraday & those equations, right?
Seems only right he should be allowed to observe the Wonders Of The Universe at first hand, and I hope to present a compelling argument in his favour. Amazing!

Rule One: The Moffat Lies.
Rule One-a: So Does The McGann.
After nearly a year of what showrunner Steven Moffat described as “lying through my teeth”, the prequel to the Doctor Who anniversary episode “The Day of the Doctor” reveals that the one fact that upset people the most is the one that was the biggest lie.
Watch, and squee with me.
Ok, so technically, Paul McGann isn’t in the Anniversary episode proper, so his year-long claim that he wasn’t asked to take part wasn’t quite a lie, but it’s close enough.
And it was released on his birthday, which is just a case of the universe rolling the right way on occasion.
The Sisterhood of Karn made their first appearance in the Tom Baker adventure The Brain of Morbius. The Sisterhood have had a long history with the Time Lords, as described in numerous prose and audio adventures.

Kate Hudson is forced to watch motoring shows on TV. The 33-year-old actress is a fan of British programmes but is tired of being forced to join her partner Matt Bellamy, their 19-month-old son Bingham and Ryder, her nine-year-old son with ex-husband Chris Robinson, in tuning into car enthusiasts' show 'Top Gear'. She said: 'I like staying in and watching British TV. It's a lot of 'Top Gear' - I've got boys. I love them but I can't watch this again.' When she manages to take control of the TV, Kate enjoys watching shows fronted by Professor Brian Cox because she finds his programmes, such as 'Stargazing Live' and 'Wonders of the Universe', 'inspiring'. She added: 'My favourite is Brian...

Professor Brian Cox's popular astronomy series now has a companion mobile app offering television footage, text and a 3D tour of the universe. Publisher Harper Collins has created the Wonders of the Universe app for iPad after agreeing a deal with the BBC for footage from Cox's TV shows Wonders of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe. The app features two and half hours of video footage from the shows (viewable over Wi-Fi), and the full text from Harper Collins's companion books, written by Cox and Andrew Cohen. Users can also take a "mind-blowing 3D tour" of the Universe with Cox as their guide, pointing out the moons, planets, stars and distant galaxies on the edge of the known universe. Sites include Red Giants, beautiful Nebulae, pulsing Neutron stars and a "daunting vision of a Black Hole sucking down a hapless (more)...

Dune Re-read, Part 10
We are almost to the end! From here on out the ratio of favorite scenes to pages is pretty close. I don’t know if there is anyone out there reading Dune for the first time but take your time with these last few chapters. You will want to rush through them because everything is Finally happening but go slowly. Savor the landscape descriptions and the quiet conversations. Some of the reasons this book is one of my all time favorites ever lie in these last few chapters.
There is something comforting about the team you root for winning. It’s right. It makes you feel good. There’s also something cunning and wonderful about the good guys being a little bad, a little morally suspect. This is a war after all, a war with devious players and a protagonist who is quite happy with manipulating an...

Imagine if you will that Doctor Who had a brilliant hippie brother named Brian Cox who visited Earth and decided to settle down and smoke a little weed instead of flying around the universe in the Tardis. Now, imagine that he teamed up with the BBC to travel around the planet, hang out with sea turtles, and blow people's minds with the second law of thermodynamics and the arrow of time. BBC's Wonders of the Universe is a nature documentary series that knocked me off my feet because it is a documentary series that I always wanted but never knew I did. Not only is it shot beautifully and shows parts of the world I might not see in my lifetime but Professor Brian Cox's narration and style makes Wonders of the Universe completely different from Discovery Channel'sPlanet Earth (the standard all others try to live up to...

The second season premiere of "Outrageous Kid Parties" is on TLC tonight and I've always hated the whole concept of expensive overdone parties for kids under the age of ten. Most of them are mentally and physically exhausted after about two hours and god forbid you drop a huge chunk of cash on a day long petting zoo rental only to have the birthday boy or girl collapse into a tantrum half way through. But my feelings may also stem from the fact that I barely remember most of my childhood birthdays beyond getting cake so I'm really glad my parents got all the decorations from Oriental Trading Company and the cake from Baskin Robbins so I don't have to feel guilty about the fact that all the parties run together in my mind. One of the joys of working on the internet is, of course, your complete and utter helplessness when your equipment decides that it wants to be a bastard. Oh, sure, your computer will tell you that you've got full wireless signal and the modem will have all the little lights on saying that the internet is connected and wireless is working but does that mean you can actually access any websites? No. No it does not. And as satisfying as it would be to throw all those little gadgets that smirk at you with their little Led indicator lights across the room, you know you can't because that will just make the whole situation worse, somehow. And when you finally figure out the right combination of cords and switching it off for 30 seconds and turning it back on to make everything work, it makes even less sense which just aggravates you more.

Tonight the Science channel (the channel recently replaying Firefly, bless em) will air the season 2 finale of its Morgan Freeman-narrated Through the Wormhole, and the title has us hooked: “What Do Aliens Look Like?” Totally up our alley. This will be preceded by a new episode of Wonders of the Universe, which this week discusses the nature of Time. It’s good to get some science fact to back up the fiction. Check out the clips and press releases:

Tonight, Discovery seems to be airing a non-Shark Week themed show since "One Man Army" is airing at its usual time. I've checked the episode description and nowhere does it mention Anything about sharks so that's frustrating and confusing. They've managed to make episodes of "Mythbusters" and "Dirty Jobs" that were Shark Week themed so I don't know why they can't just do that for all shows that air during Shark Week. And since the same company owns TLC and Discovery channel maybe they could send a few sharks over to "Toddlers and Tiaras" to get these parents to have a little perspective. "What's that? Your little girl doesn't like it when you bleach her hair because it burns? That's a shame. We've got someone to help you deal with those feelings. Actually, several someones. Or somethings. Over here in Rusty-land it's one of those Wednesday that seems to be taking forever but at the same time every so often I'll look up at the clock and be like "wait, it's what time now? Crap." I find this to be a particular problem with Wednesdays, perhaps because of the transition from first half of the week to second half of the week at least if you're going by the standard Monday to Friday week schedule. Although perhaps I should be more upbeat since according to today's xkcd Wednesday is frequently Ladies' night. Oh, right, there's also some television going on. Science is sexy again- just ask Professor Brian Cox. Back in the 90s, he was strutting his stuff in forgettable (and probably regrettable) pop band D:Ream, and now he shares his time between firing particles at one another for the Atlas experiment, and fighting off the ladies while presenting his wonderful science show on BBC2 (coincidentally called Wonders of the Solar System).

Brian Cox treats us to the Wonders Of The Universe, while The Ricky Gervais Show returns to the UK. Here's our UK TV look-ahead...
Last year around this time, the BBC treated viewers to a science show with a difference in Wonders Of The Solar System. The difference was in the anti-stuffy presenter, Professor Brian Cox, whose simple, but sensible demonstrations elucidated more in one hour than a whole term of school for some. Ryan reviewed the show saying, "Cox's enthusiasm for his subject is infectious, and while a physics professor talking about science in jeans and t-shirt may sound like a school teacher's toe-curling attempt to get down with the kids, his casual approach to explaining science is refreshing, rather than condescending."
