Drama gets better
jpismyname21 December 2017
Lady Sybil and Branson plan to marry and elope. Sir Richard, who is quite possessive and intimidating, asks Anna to spy on Lady Mary. Bates think that he might get in trouble with his wife's suicide.

This episode is better than the previous one.

If I had a nickel for every time that O'Brien and Thomas whispered conspiracies, I could buy Downton Abbey!

Warning: Spoilers
Anna and Bates get rid of one schemer in Vera and gain another in Richard Carlisle who tries to pay Anna to spy on her. Of course when she refuses, he asks her to keep silent, and her look indicates that she's onto the potential troubles down the road. As for Carson, he's torn on whether or not to leave Downton because of his loyalty to Lady Mary which Mrs. Hughes does not understand and he explains their closeness and his understanding of Mary beneath the surface. Mrs. Hughes tries to aide Ethel further by approaching her babies grandparents. It's a mixed reaction and of course the paternal grandmother is the one more anxious to accept the truth.

As for those schemers O'Brien and Thomas, they are more than willing to see Bates go down, but Thomas is breaking the law himself by running a black market ring. When Robert impulsively kisses Jane, the new maid, his temptation shocks himself. The main story is the explosion much needed in Sybil and Tom's romance, and she agrees to run away and marry him. Happiness comes in the form of Matthew regaining the use of his legs which creates the announcement of his intention to marry Livinia. But Lady Violet has a plan, and it's a speech that only Maggie Smith can deliver in her intimidable way.

So Much Tension
Hitchcoc6 August 2020
We have several plot elements going on. Lavinia is a true soldier, but Matthew loves Mary. Lord Grantham gets together with Jane. Will more happen? Branson and Sybil begin to fulfill their mission. Thomas begins what could be a criminal career, but fate takes him on. Mr. Bates comes to realize that the death of his estranged wife is going to lead to trouble for him. This episode is rife with possibilities and is skillfully done.

This show is so Good.
There is nothing like the Christmas season to bring out the best and worst in relationships. It was the perfect setting for the finale of season two of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece Classic PBS last night. Packed with resolution and romance, we were treated to couples grappling for love and others smoothing out rough patches. We were very happy to see screenwriter Julian Fellowes return to the more sophisticated, AND interesting, sphere of personal relationships to wrap up this tumultuous, and at times outrageous, second season. Upstairs entanglements: While, it ONLY took two seasons and eleven episodes to finally bring heir Matthew Crawley and Lady Mary together, we were happy none-the-less. They deserve each other: each with their hang-up's canceling each other's out quite nicely. We were also introduced to a new amour of the older generation that at first impression appeared promising, but their defects could not be overlooked. Lady Rosamund Painswick's beau Lord Hepworth looked great in Burke's Peerage, but with the help of that super sleuth, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, who is really the relationship whisperer of Downton, you know, and the observant housemaid Anna, we learn the nasty truth. On the other hand, we were very pleased to see that Lady Edith took our advice and sought out her own happiness by reconnecting with her former beau, Sir Anthony Strallen. Go #TeamEdith! And, there is nothing like a near death experience to put all to right in the romance department. No one expects the Spanish Flu, but almost losing Lady Grantham to the grim reaper has done wonders for the floundering, mid-life crisis inflicted Lord Grantham. He and his lady seem to have rekindled their affections enough for her to feel confident to wheedle his approval for their newly married, rebel, expat, daughter Lady Sybil off in Ireland making babies.
