Even though I don't have children, and even though there's still many years left of my life where I will not have children and won't even think about having them, I have heard stories about having them and everyone that have had children have said that it's one of the most magical experiences that you can ever experience. And you know what, even though I have no way of confirming that as I (as I mentioned before) don't have children, I've never doubted that what they told me was right. Having children seems like a life-changing experience and the fact that something so new can have such a profound impact on your life is one of the real wonders of life. In the second season opener of "Louie," an entire episode is dedicated to the idea of having children, but also the idea of living with children from a divorced marriage. Keeping with the tradition of mixing comedy with deep and existential questions, "Louie" tackles the entire foundation of children in this episode, which includes an unexpected visit from Louie's sister and a very painful and loud trip to the hospital. And in best "Louie" fashion, this is another episode that tackles its themes incredibly well, providing a very human look at how difficult it is to take care of people on our own. It provides the backdrop for a serious change within Louie that may or may not have some ripple effects on the rest of the season; if not that, then definitely on Louie's life.

It's not easy being a co-parent. In fact, for Louie, it can be very devastating as we see in an opening scene that is part-hilarious, part-devastating. For Louie, it certainly sets the tone and his behavior for the rest of the episode, and it's all done in an attempt to show how much he actually loves his daughters. He loves them so much that he decides to end the episode with a beautiful monologue about the wonders of having a child and how it truly changes one's life. It has a real impact, especially after the rest of the episode.

The episode gains another level of tenderness after Louie's sister is introduced. In a very funny conversation between the two, Louie is finally able to talk to another person about something that's very close to him, and even though the conversation goes from pleasant to name-calling very quickly, it still feels like an honest moment for this tragic character. Louie is slowly growing as a character, and even if that development he had in the first season was hidden under a layer of clever jokes, he wouldn't have been able to do all of this without all of that.

When his sister had a medical scare (his pregnant sister, by the way!) Louie has to take the help of his neighbors, who help him to the best of their abilities. At the end, they share a very touching moment with Louie, who finally seems to have come out of that shell and realized that it's not always bad to take the time to get to know other people. It's actually the best thing you can do, because you never know when you may need their help. "Louie" is a genius show, but this is on another level, really!

Louis C. K. is taking on a lot with this show, having once again performed all the major job titles on this episode, so the fact that he still has it in him to perform this character the way he does is incredible. A lot of it probably comes from himself, but the obvious care that he puts into the crafting of the character should probably make it harder to portray, but C. K. falls into the role so seemingly easy that it's unbelievable. If he can hold that emotion in his performance all the way, this is for the history books.

"Pregnant" is a perfect "welcome back" to fans of this show and it continues to explore the show's themes and ideas to the perfect extend. It's a heartfelt episode that seems to bring Louie into the light about himself and his relationship to others; the result of a chaotic day with his children and a terrifying trip to the hospital.
