A film about dealing with loss, childhood and motherhood
Trentflix24 January 2013
Writer/Director Francesca Gregorini brings a unique and entertaining voice to her new film Emanuel and the Truth about Fishes. This is a darkly comic yet dramatic film about a young misfit girl who befriends her new next-door neighbor who is a single mother with a newborn.

This film is about, among other things, dealing with loss, motherhood and relationships with mothers. Not being able to be a mother but wanting to, not having a mother and wanting one. It may not sound exciting, or it may sound like a set-up for a romantic comedy of sorts, but this film has elements of horror, mystery, surrealism and gets quite intense at times. The film while it is dramatic and has many moments of the above is surprisingly comedic which helps balance the darker aspects of the film. Few films can pull off the level of comedy and heart- breaking reality that this film employs.

I knew fairly early on that I was going to like this film, the way it played perfectly with the audience's emotion and the striking production design. It is amazing how fresh and different this film feels, there is always an undercurrent that something is wrong which latches you to everything on screen.

I was emotionally invested in our main protagonist Emanuel (played by Kaya Scodelario) and in-turn with the single mother Linda (played by Jessica Biel). Between this and Wuthering Heights, I think Kaya Scodelario is an actress to keep an eye on. I've never been a Jessica Biel fan, until now, she is perfect in her role as 'the perfect mother'. The family dynamic too feels authentic with great supporting roles by Alfred Molina and Frances O'Conner.

The only thing that doesn't quite work in this film is the ending; it ends a bit abruptly and offers some emotional satisfaction but in terms of 'reality' feels like more should have happened to find a resolution for the characters. Maybe that's the point though, in difficult situations like these there is no neat bow to tie and make everyone feel perfect and the dissonance at the end is a manifestation of that. Other reactions may be more mixed but thematically and emotionally it was engaging and I appreciated it a great deal.

Sensitive and Touching Story of Loss and Friendship
claudio_carvalho13 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The bitter and introspective seventeen year-old Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario) is a troubled girl that lost her mother giving birth to her and she feels guilty for her loss. She lives with her father Dennis (Alfred Molina) and her estranged stepmother Janice (Frances O'Connor) in a house in the suburb. Emanuel has not gone to college and works in a drugstore with her colleague Arthur (Jimmi Simpson). She uses to flirt with the teenager Claude (Aneurin Barnard) in the train she uses to go to her job.

When her next door neighbor Linda (Jessica Biel) offers Emanuel to be the babysitter of her newborn Chloe, Emanuel accepts the job offer but she does not see the baby that is sleeping. But Emanuel and Linda feel connected to each other and Emanuel visits Linda in her leisure time to help her with Chloe. When Emanuel finally sees Chloe, she realizes that her new friend is living a great illusion but she keeps her secret. When Linda dates Arthur, the touching truth about her is disclosed.

"The Truth About Emanuel" is a beautiful movie with a sensitive and touching story of loss and friendship. Emanuel and Linda are troubled women bonded by their losses. The beginning of the story is ambiguous and the viewer is never sure whether what Emanuel is seeing is her insane perception or reality until the moment that her stepmother visits Linda. I believe the water is a metaphor with the amniotic fluid that connects Emanuel and Linda and rebirth, but I did not understand the meaning of fishes. The performances are great and despite the bad reviews, the viewer may like it like I did. My vote is seven.

A really long swim to the end, but it is worth it once you get there.
face-819-93372627 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Well that was a lot deeper than I expected it to be, but most Jessica Biel movies are. So the question that you are asked is: What do you owe to someone who dies so that you can live? How do you make payments? They seem to say that the answer is: When you feel like you are so deep under water that you just cant breathe, then you need to let go, and trust that the currents will carry you to where you are supposed to be. I guess. This movie is creepy, but not scary.(Take it from someone who's first real memory is like the awakening scene in this movie) There has been a lot of loss, and these characters are trying to fill the emptiness. You will not know who are the bad people in this movie, and it is to the credit of the actors that you will side with the young Emanuel from the start, and everyone will seem suspicious. If you like really long drawn out dramatic movies that never seem to get anywhere fast, but that finally pay out fully, and with extra butter. Then you will Enjoy this movie a lot. If you would rather remove your own eyes than watch a bunch of women sitting around talking(not what this is, just what it represents), then miss this one.

aka the truth about fishes

Softness, quiescence, mellow and dull, this movie builds towards a breaking point.

Emanuel, a young woman whose mother died in child birth is still haunted by the absence. Longing, hurt inside, she forms a connection with a new next door neighbor named Linda (played by Jessica Biel).

Can't spoil the movie, but Linda and Emanuel are connected by loss.

We need one another, we love one another and sometimes, the bereavement even if we never got to truly know that lost one, is so strong it breaks our hearts, minds, souls, and future. We find ourselves surrounded by water, drowning and watching our love fall deeper and get carried away by the current.

I enjoyed this movie.

Kaya Scodelario carried the movie and Jessica Biel delivered in a believable way.

Written and Directed by Francesca Gregorini, I didn't have any complaints with the script and felt there was a great pace and rhythm to the movie, supported nicely with music.

Other world
kosmasp11 May 2014
Movies (unless documentaries, though even those are not entirely "real") are not supposed to be taken straight up, because they are what someone else thought of, so its supposed to be otherworldly. In this case the movie takes it to other places literally. Not always and only at special points in the story.

The German title also might indicate this to be a bit different than you'd expect (especially concerning our female lead): Linda's Child. But the Germans always like to explain the movies you're about to watch. The female lead, a young very beautiful actress has more than a couple of flaws and issues. Not a very sociable person (even though she has the charisma to pull that off, the looks as mentioned are there from the get go), but a person that might be able to help others who have issues of their own. Be it from the male or female gender.

This isn't perfect by a long shot, the points can be guessed, but they could've been made better. Still the performances (also Jessica Biel) are more than phenomenal. If you like weird thrillers with some extra touch, you are right on the spot with this one

Great acting and character development but misses the mark
jlbrown10027 February 2015
The lead actresses deserve 9/10. The story concept 8/10. The whole package 6/10. The symbiotic relationship between the lead characters is realistic and develops quickly. The story line is a bit contrived but does express the characters' deep sense of loss and interdependency. It is very unfortunate that some of that energy is lost during the final symbolic scenes. Instead of leaving a lasting impression, they fall a bit flat. Nevertheless, this film is worth watching for the acting alone. It was impressive that Kaya Scodelario developed such a realistic American accent for the role. It adds another dimension to her excellent acting ability and (like Jessica Biel) she has the natural and very good looks to go with it.

The Truth is It's Ok
FetchDonk10 November 2019
TL;DR An interesting watch. Probably will not stick. Passable.

This film's certainly an interesting one, at least conceptually and how it presents certain ideas, but that's about it. Visually, I can appreciate the film but it's really nothing outstanding. Lots of the dialogue feels strange, some characters feel irrelevant to the point that you could take them out and It'd literally be the same story, and some things just detract from the main focus of the film. The acting is fine but not outstanding to me, the main character never really reaches me and does some questionable things but is understandable contextually, and its unique imagery makes it stand out.

Not much great to say that's great about it in my opinion. It's just ok and I think its artistic qualities are what make this movie's concept interesting. Solid hit-or-miss in my opinion with lots of glaring flaws.

Swimming with damaged fish
tigerfish5019 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
More a surreal allegory than a realistic narrative, 'The Truth about Emanuel' portrays how two women deal with loss. One of them is Emanuel, an abrasive seventeen-year-old whose mother had died at her birth, who becomes increasingly alienated after her father's remarriage. The other is Linda, who moves into the next-door house with a new-born infant. After Emanuel impulsively offers babysitting services to her neighbor, she soon learns the older woman is more troubled than appearances would indicate.

Emanuel and Linda supposedly establish a bond which gives them an opportunity to heal their respective traumas, but their relationship isn't very convincing, and the stylized nature of the film also chokes off any real connection to the characters. Although there's some competent acting and luminous cinematography, most of the time everything is too self-consciously strange and slow. Linda and Emanuel are supposed to be oddball personalities, but they're actually rather dull, and the obligatory big revelation doesn't contain any surprises. The resolution of their issues is both glib and implausible, and as a result, the climactic scenes play out without much emotional impact.

Touching movie about loss and friendship
wilhelm-2222 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
A movie with an unusual flavor and with an original theme: the friendship between a young girl, troubled by the loss of her mother, and a woman who is troubled by the loss of her daughter. The film has a very special atmosphere and the acting is very good throughout. The script isn't 100% tight. There are scenes that never lead anywhere (like the scenes with the step-mom suspecting a lesbian relationship between her stepdaughter and the neighbour). The poetic/metaphoric under water scenes seem a bit out of place, and there is also some clumpsy editing. It's easy to forgive these minor flaws though, thanks to the great acting and a touching, original story.

Had potential but falls flat midway through
spotlightne27 November 2013
An annoying 17 year old girl, whose mother died giving birth to her, comes across her new neighbour, a 31 year old stunning brunette who has a young baby, and who appears to be without a husband, boyfriend or any man in her life.

The young girl develops an obsession for her hot neighbour. BUT IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK.

It should be that. Lesbian lust, but it isn't.

Instead the girl stumbles across the neighbour's secret which she feels she must stop others knowing about.

A rather plodding drama that starts off well, then loses its way midway through. The ending could have been good, but instead we're treated to a rather unrealistic finale.

Only 5/10 from me.

beautiful and simple but intelligent film.
donnie-baybie18 February 2014
On reading the reviews for this film, I was expecting a slow paced and emotionally confusing story, but having watched this film I feel it has gone hideously unappreciated. The beginning is a little slow, and it's hard to connect to the characters initially, but the bond created between the teenager and woman is both unique and thought provoking.

This film has lovely dynamics, and deals with the issues of loss and emotional wellbeing in a very poetic and intricate manner that cannot go unappreciated.

I addition to these points, the music is also very well suited.

All in all, this story is very quiet, poetic and special, and if you are someone who appreciates the relationship one can build with a film, then definitely waste no more time and watch this.

Very solid drama!
petarmatic29 January 2014
First about acting. Acting is outstanding in this film! Alfred Molina is one fantastic actor. It is not that I am underestimating other actors, but I like him, I always did. Other actors are outstanding too, no wonder this film picked up few awards.

I do not have to mention cinematography, it is outstanding too. It also picked up few awards, it deserved it!

As far as the plot goes I was not too impressed, but it is a story of life, and as it told, it makes perfect sense. Two women bonding together, to overcome issues from the past. Hmm. Two mentally ill women bonding together. And the water. What the hell is the water all about? So plot is not as outstanding as acting and cinematography.

I would declare this film is for the women.

Slow-Moving Psychological Drama
lavatch13 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There was an intriguing bond that developed between young Emanuel and her neighbor Linda. Emanuel's mother died while giving birth to her. Linda's infant daughter died tragically with no definitive cause of death determined. Neither character has fully recovered. The film traces the common psychological trauma that the two women share.

The main problem with "The Truth Abut Emanuel" was the pacing. The glacially slow action bogged the film down, especially in the scenes with the "fake" baby of Linda. There were moments when the action even lapsed into comedy.

The content of the film was also grim and depressing. While the performances were sincere, the truth about Emanuel was that she needed help that she was not getting from her kind father and stepmother. One of the most preposterous scenes was when Emanuel assisted Linda in escaping from a nut house.

Will the catharsis of burying Linda's doll on the site of the grave of Emanuel's mother make any difference in the lives of Linda and Emanuel? Based on the profoundly troubled nature of the two characters' connection to reality, the future does not appear promising.

Poetic but not much else.
borgolarici17 March 2020
The movie starts out as a honest thriller with horror undertones but the tone changes midway, shifting to poetic and ending on an oniric note. It's not a bad movie and it's entertaining enough , but it doesn't dig as deep as it could have

The Truth About Emanuel is almost like a fanfic in which Effy was adopted, but still had her charm and issues.
Amari-Sali14 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Probably the sole reason I saw this movie was Kaya Scodelario. Like many, I found the character of Effy to be entrancing, and have seen most Scodelario's movies ever since. Thing is, outside of maybe Wuthering Heights, there is that slight feeling that perhaps Scodelario is type casted. However, she hasn't really have had a breakout role to separate her from Effy, and unfortunately this movie is not that role which makes you see her in a whole new light.

Characters & Story

For The Truth About Emanuel there is a rather small cast. Scodelario plays the lead, Emanuel, who is a girl who lost her mother, is quite open about it, and pretty much has the same personality as Effy did during series/season 4. Meaning, while appealing, her issues do tend to create quite a bit of drama in her life of which some she causes, and other bits she is attracted to. Alongside her in the movie are the characters Linda (played by Jessica Biel) a woman dealing with a failed marriage; Dennis (played by Alfred Molina) who plays Emanuel's dad; and then there is Janice (played by Frances O'Connor), the only one who seems to see Emanuel for who she is and seemingly is growing tired of Dennis creating excuses for her.

As for the story though, we focus on the lead-up to Emanuel's 18th birthday. She meets a guy named Claude (played by Aneurin Barnard) who she dates for a little while; meets Linda who seems nice at first, until her eccentricities are revealed; and all the while she has a step-mom in Janice who thinks she is gay, and a dad, Dennis, who just wants a sense of normalcy. But, being that Linda has a secret and Emanuel has a slight obsession with how her mom died, what life would have been like if she died instead of her mom, and other similar topics, we see two peculiar lives converge and create many moments which just leave you turning your head.

Praise

Now, though I criticize Scodelario for nearly playing the same character each role she has, it is hard to deny that most aspects of her one trick pony aren't good. She maintains the Effy allure which gets you interested in her character, and this is what greatly helps maintain interest in the film. Also, I must note that the music in the film was quite beautiful and relaxing. And though I'm about to critique the hell out of the story, I must admit the bits between Emanuel and Claude I thought were quite cute and a saving grace for the film.

Criticism

However the rest of the film seems to not ever fully grasp the concept of grief, and while you understand the various coping mechanisms used in the film, something about the situations just feel off. Not off as in the how someone is coping or why, but the performances. Biel in particular, doesn't make you feel anything even though she has a very sympathetic character. Part of the reason for this is, she is presented as nothing but awkward. Not creepy, or just a sad case worth pity, she is just this odd woman whose secret doesn't even have a real proper build in the film. Sadly, her secret is obvious early on and though you understand why she is in the film, at the same time you sort of wish she was written out.

And while, as noted earlier, Scodelario is the film's saving saving grace, she does add onto the issues of the film. The reason I say this is Scodelario has that ability to teeter between being vulnerable, relatable and yet unobtainable, but once her character goes to a place where she isn't this interesting femme fatale type, she loses you a bit. Now, this isn't to say Scodelario isn't able to, in this film, draw sympathy out of you, but the issue is that when it comes to her character having a mental breakdown, it shows where her abilities as an actress are lacking.

Overall: Skip It

Though I do adore Scodelario, I can't recommend this film. Though the idea of Emanuel living vicariously through Linda's love for her baby wasn't lost on me, the concept just didn't click well in the writing. Also, thought I love the Effy mannerisms and personality, it is starting to get old. And really, even the cute little sub-plot of Emanuel and Claude isn't enough to even say this is worth watching on TV. So, just skip it. Maybe if you are a fan of Scodelario it may be worth checking out, but for a general audience there isn't anything here worth seeing really.

A pretty good treatment on the impact of loss. Some unique shots. There are a few moments of absurdity and obscurity but overall a compelling drama. I have no idea why anyone would categorize this as a thriller. Not anywhere close to a thriller.

Fails to complete lesbian relationship
jsmithsdkafjsldksj6 February 2014
5 stars for the stunning actresses and one for being ingenious. There is so much potential between the two main characters to develop an intimate relationship (which was also hinted on by the stepmother). But then the movie lifts the obvious awkwardness into the realm of the realistic, destroying the ingenuity and art of the script. Making it just like any other movie.

Personally I believe they should just give up on conveying new ideas for the purpose of mainstream entertainment. It just doesn't work. Either you do something great and many will not comprehend it, or you do something average and many will empathize.

If the directors had any sense of mainstream creativity, they would have simply cloned the actresses. Like in the Resident Evil series. Many Milla Jovovich > one Milla Jovovich. Many Jessica Biel > one Jessica Biel. It is basic algebra. Though, the main character girl looked pretty attractive too, but the stepmother not really. At least there could be twins. I mean, come on!

If you read a bad review than whoever wrote that review doesn't see the full meaning...
mandalynn-access3 August 2014
I gave it a 10/10 because this movie did for me everything that I look for in a movie; it was captivating, emotional, mysterious and deep! The 2 main actresses were a perfect fit! They added beauty and real true character that I personally cannot see any other actresses that pop into my head doing such a role so perfectly! If you can relate to this movie then it really gives you feelings and something to think about, unlike a lot of movies these days that just end and leave you saying "was that really IT?!" This one left me with lots of imagination and even closure (which is actually what the end was all about!) Thank you for this piece, it truly inspired me!

feel like I have seen this movie before
evemee78725 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
i guess this movie is about loss and deficiency that could never be filled with anything. This is typical subject so it is really important how to make a story without leaving a familiar impression. Like I said, it is familiar to me. Because I have read some short s stories reminiscent of this movie. The images of fishes and ocean reminds me of " legend of suicide" written by David Vann and the story of babysitting the baby who does not exist, A short story of William Trevor which I can't remember the name of. So this movie has beautiful scenes and I like watching it but there is no impression on it. And I cannot actually feel sadness for Emmanuel or Linda

Almost funny...
westfield-john8 May 2014
Where does this movie head at? I think this question wasn't important, as the motivation of the director must have been most important. The film does excel when it comes to technical skills and standards. The whole settings and the filming location were really a good choice, and the story itself could have been more than an overused vessel. But the movie lacks as soon as I think about the main actors. Both Jessica Biel and Kaya Scodelario (what a wonderful name) wouldn't match. Until the end I was waiting for some kind of a surprising effect. Though most actors in the supporting roles were quite convincing, the movie left me with the impression of a void, a huge yawning void. May because it was too late for watching 'The Truth About Emanuel', or the unfinished, rough performance of both main actress' led only to a shallow mood. The truth is, there have been many more movies succeeding in what the director intended with this work. However, if you like Kaya Scodelario eyes', or want to see Jessica Biel failing horribly, I would definitely recommend this movie. But don't expect to see a provocative nor sensitive film, it was more like grotesque.

A "drama" which I wasn't "thrilled" to watch
jaluca-599115 July 2020
Yes, the STORY was about a profound loss. Yes, in reality, I would empathize with the loss. This movie took this very real sort of loss and turned it into a CIRCUS. If you truly expect this movie to serve some sort of higher purpose, you don't have a firm grip on reality. If have a warped sense of humor, then it is HA-larious. Therefore as a serious story, I give it 1 star, but as a fun movie to laugh at, Mystery Science 3000-style, I give it a 10! Without spoiling anything, ponder the following if you do choose to watch this "gem:" Who in their right mind would play along with this woman's broken sense of reality and not get her some sort of help!?! Give into your sarcasm and L A U G H at how seriously this movie takes itself.
