The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Chicago – The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Cso) has come up with the perfect celebration for the pre-holiday weekend, presenting Frank Capra’s classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life in Concert.” On Dec. 10th and 11th, 2016. The Cso will accompany the soundtrack on a restored version of the film.

"After everything we've seen, there isn't much that rattles either of us anymore," Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) says toward the start of the new "Conjuring 2" trailer. "But this one? This one still haunts me."
This one is the story of "England's Amityville," following a family in North London dealing with a possessed little girl who apparently goes full Linda Blair in a seriously haunted house. In the trailer, Lorraine tells her husband Ed (Patrick Wilson) that she had a premonition of his death, saying the family is just a pawn and "something inhuman wants to kill you." Thanks for the tip!
This is all happening around Christmas, which is a particularly scary time for crosses to turn themselves upside-down on the wall. While a haunting version of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" plays, we see these words on screen: "Discover the truth behind the event that shocked the world."

There are always plenty of Christmas-music roundups this time of year. This one's different. The others usually focus on the newest offerings. Nothing I've gotten this year has really struck a chord, but there is no shortage of favorites from years past that have proven their merits and held up over time. It is those in the classical realm, where trends matter least; and choral, because it's sacred choir music that's at the heart of the celebration of Christmas, that are listed below.

If you want some Christmas music you don't already know by heart, just look further back in history. The early music movement of the past half-century has unearthed many long-forgotten masterpieces from the Medieval and Renaissance eras.

You might not know this, but Christopher Lee is the greatest 92-year-old to have ever graced the earth. Not only is he one of the most dedicated and talented actors to ever be committed to celluloid, but he is also a bona-fide heavy metal artist, too. And he even has a brand-new Christmas single out. You can hear a snippet from it in the video below. Christopher Lee.s festive Christmas single is titled, Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing. And while it may not be the normal sort of track that you hear around the Christmas season, you can.t help but adore it since The Wicker Man actor.s famous dulcet tones feature on it. As you can probably tell, the metal song is actually set to the music of Hark the Herald Angels Sing. However the lyrics themselves have been slightly altered to fit in with the metal vibe.

Bet you didn't expect to be singing Christmas carols with a Lord of the Rings star this holiday season! At 92 years young, Christopher Lee has decided to rock out with a brand new single titled "Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing." The heavy metal tune is described as a playful rendition of the holiday classic "Hark! The Heralds Angels Sing." "It's light-hearted, joyful and fun," Lee shared with reporters. "It's a band singing on how metal should be played, the effect it has on the band and its listeners." What makes this even more unique is the fact that Lee can now call himself the oldest heavy metal artist ever. "At my age, the most...

Saving Mr. Banks (Disney)
How many of you remember Walt Disney and Tinkerbell's opening every Sunday night on his primetime television show? That director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) recreates that magical moment is just one of the many small charms in this wonderful movie. Award-winning actors taking on American's greatest children's entertainment advocate seems a delicious proposition. And it is. This is the story of Walt's (Tom Hanks) -- he preferred that everyone refer to each other by their first names on his studio lot -- relentless pursuit (20 years!) of Mrs. P.L. Travers's (Emma Thompson) much-beloved literary classic Mary Poppins.
Director Hancock seamlessly threads two plots together: the trials and tribulations of the backstage Hollywood drama of creating the film version of Mary Poppins, and the Australian-based melodrama of Mrs. Travers's childhood with her loving but tragically alcoholic father "Ginty" Goth, portrayed by the charismatic Colin Farrell.

It's an indisputable fact that Christmas music is the most horrible music, as clearly demonstrated by the multitude of holiday songs incorporating onomatopoeia — click-click-click, thumpety thump-thump, pa-rum pa pum-pum.
Your dignity is diminished just by singing it. And the most awful film genre is Christmas films, with the exception of Die Hard and every movie written by Shane Black. It stands to reason that an Austin-based Christmas film is going to feature a whole lot of Christmas music, and indeed, Angels Sing has a cast that includes Harry Connick Jr., Lyle Lovett, Nashville's Connie Britton, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson.
So there's a lot of onscreen music-making, some of it amazing, the rest Santa-related...

You don’t exactly get to hear Angels Sing, as the title of the new Christmas-themed movie would have it, but the film comes pretty close. This Austin-set, modern-day variation of Miracle on 34th Street about a father who disdains Christmas features Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett singing holiday classics, as well as cameos by such music stars as Dale Watson, Sara Hickman, Marcia Ball, Charlie Sexton, Miss Lavelle White and Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson. In the trailer for the upcoming family holiday movie Angels Sing, it looks like Willie Nelson is Santa Claus. But come to think of it, hasn't Willie Nelson always been Santa in our hearts? The movie also stars Harry Connick Jr., Connie Britton, and Lyle Lovett, and it tells the story of a man who relearns the importance of Christmas. Though it sounds like a made-for-tv type of holiday flick, a limited release is planned for this fall. We kind of like the idea of a smaller, low-key Christmas movie in theaters. It could be a nice change of pace.

Willie Nelson turns 80 this month, and the country music legend is celebrating -- you guessed it -- by going on the road again in support of a new album. Out April 16 from Legacy Recordings, "Let's Face the Music and Dance" is heavy on covers from the the 1930s, the decade when Nelson was born. The singer-songwriter, actor and activist has composed some of the most indelible tunes of our times (did you know that he wrote "Crazy," popularized by Patsy Cline?), but it's a pleasure to hear him breathe new life into these sturdy old numbers, and a relief to know that his vocal and guitar stylings are aging like fine Kentucky bourbon. (Yes, he's from the Lone Star State, but who's ever heard of Texas bourbon?)
Nelson recently visited the South by Southwest festival in Austin, where he played a modern St. Nick in the indie film "When Angels Sing,...

My third day of the fest was my busiest for film watching, with three titles. I'm finding this year that transportation considerations are taking more time than ever. Parking downtown is a complaint on everyone's lips as the Convention Center garages fill up in the early morning, and many surface lots that would normally serve overflow have been covered in tents for different events. Since this is my first year taking SXSW Film red carpet photos, I've learned it's a big drain on time as check-in can be 90 minutes to two hours before showtime.
So, my Sunday included a red carpet for the Turk Pipkin Christmas movie When Angels Sing (my review) and ended with the ass-demon horror comedy Milo (my review). Sandwiched in between, I caught Alex Winters' Napster documentary Downloaded.

Austin -- The Christmas film "When Angels Sing" boasts Willie Nelson as Santa Claus; Lyle Lovett as a holiday-happy neighbor to Harry Connick, Jr.'s Scrooge, due to his unhappy Christmas past; and Kris Kristofferson as his dad, and his heart if full of the season's joy. So, of course, the soundtrack is X-mas excellence. The film -- shot in Austin and premiered at South By Southwest -- is as family-friendly as they come, with Connick's usual charm and easiness oozing from in between the green and red trim. The trademark seems to be Hallmark, though the film has yet to get...

There are a few classic holiday films we like to pull out each year in addition to the Rankin/Bass Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, such as A Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life and the more modern A Christmas Story. A common thread between these films that has helped make them annual favorites is that they don't focus on the religious or ritual aspects of the holiday, but instead on it as a time for homecomings and shared memories with family and loved ones, friends and neighbors. Soon to join those ranks is When Angels Sing, the adaptation of a Turk Pipkin story by director Tim McCanlies and writer Lou Berney.
Easily the best Christmas movie since 1983's A Christmas Story, When Angels Sing was shot in Austin and features a Who's Who of talent with Texas ties. Stars Harry Connick Jr. and Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights...

Austin-based actress Heather Kafka shows up in features Pit Stop, The Bounceback, Loves Her Gun, When Angels Sing, and short Black Metal which are all screening at SXSW next month. Let's just say that if you see a film with local ties during the festival, there's about a 75% chance that Kafka will be in it. You might have seen her previously in locally made movies like Lovers of Hate, Saturday Morning Massacre, Slacker 2011 (pictured above) ... and she's the woman trying to buy from the Carl's Jr. kiosk in Idiocracy.

When Angels Sing – they already describe this movie as a life-affirming story for all ages, so I guess that one short preview of the whole thing won’t hurt. The movie comes from director Tim McCanlies, it stars Harry Connick Jr. and Connie Britton in the leading roles, and is also one of the films that will premiere at this year’s SXSW (which runs from March 8 – 17). Take a look, and let us know what you think! Tim McCanlies directed the movie from a script written by Lou Berney, which centers on a man named Michael Walker who struggles to make peace with...

The feature-film selections for the 2013 SXSW Film Festival were announced last week and boy, are there a lot of movies with Austin connections on the program -- so many that we had to split this article in two! We'll start with the narrative feature films, and the second half will highlight the documentaries and "festival favorites." These lists don't include the short films or the midnight movies, which will be announced later today.
Headliners:
When Angels Sing -- Austin director Tim McCanlies' new film is based on a novel by Turk Pipkin (who also appears in the movie), wherein the main character has a troubled relationship with Christmas. Sometimes-Austinite Connie Britton stars as the wife, and the cast also includes Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Heather Kafka (who appears in four SXSW feature films this year), and the Red Headed Stranger himself! Elizabeth Avellan of Troublemaker Studios is one of the producers on this film,...

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

Director/Screenwriter: Todd Sklar, Screenwriter: Alex Rennie

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...

Whatever number of Austin films I might have guessed would be in the SXSW Film Festival feature lineup released this afternoon, I would have been short. Texas is everywhere in this year's festival, and the midnight movies and short films won't even be announced for another week.
In addition, we at Slackerwood have some news about the SXSW Film 2013 screening locations, as we prepare our annual stellar SXSW Film Venue Guide. Apart from Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar (sob), the theaters will be the same as last year, with a couple of additions. The brand-new Topfer Theatre at Zach Scott will be a film venue, about which I know nothing, so if you've been there please share your impressions in the comments. And all four screens of Violet Crown Cinema will be used for screenings -- no details yet on how, but we'll keep you posted.

Gary R. Benz (President & CEO) of long established TV company Grb Entertainment announced today the official launch of the company.s international feature film division which will be selling rights to two films at this year.s Marche du Film. Grb.s expansion into feature theatrical films began last year when Benz set up the feature division and brought Todd Olsson on board. The company has been looking for high quality commercially viable features that are a cut above the usual fare.
.We.ve been working hard to find the right films to get off to a great start, and both of these films are extraordinary,. said Benz.
The company will bring Queen Freak, which stars Matthew Modine, Kristin Chenoweth, Joey King, Shirley Jones, and a relatively new-comer in the lead, Olesya Rulin. It.s a wickedly sharp tale about a dysfunctional family, where the kids take matters into their...

We know they can sing, but can they act? With Dolly Parton’s return to the big screen in “Joyful Noise,” NextMovie was inspired to take a look at some of country music’s biggest stars who’ve transferred their talents from the recording studio to the screen.
They may be the toast of the town in Nashville, but do they make the grade in Hollywood? These nine crooner-thespians have had varying degrees of success, from “um, you should probably keep your day job” to starring roles that garner great reviews.

In real life, this country queen is married to Nashville superstar Tim McGraw, and her one turn on the big screen was also as a wife -- one of the Stepford Wives -- in the 2004 film that costarred Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close and Bette Midler.

Before "Friday Night Lights" was a TV show, it was a movie (and before that, a book). Now, the executive producer Peter Berg (also the director of the movie) is considering making a movie out of the TV show. So, rather than a sequel to the original film (which is the movie that made everyone notice singer Tim McGraw as an actor), this movie would be an extension of the TV show like the Sex and the City movies. Universal (NBC's parent company which owns/runs "Fnl") says they don't currently have this project in development but that doesn't mean the idea isn't being kicked around upstairs.
What's interesting is that most of the "Friday Night Lights" cast have transitioned into movie stars:
* Minka Kelly ("Lyla Garrity") is now a major star with lead roles in The Roommate and Just Go With It.
* Aimee Teegarden ("Julie Taylor," pictured) was the...

"Isn't it great?" says Connie Britton, calling in to Zap2it from the set of "When Angels Sing," a movie she's shooting with Harry Connick Jr. in Austin, Texas. "So awesome. I was thrilled!"
She's talking about her friend and "Friday Night Lights" co-star Adrianne Palicki, who has been cast in the lead role of Wonder Woman/Diana Prince in David E. Kelley's re-imagining of DC Comics superheroine "Wonder Woman" for NBC and Warner Bros.
Britton and Palicki spent several years together shooting "Lights" in Austin -- the fifth and final season starts airing on NBC on April 15, and Palicki returns for the last two episodes -- and Britton has kept close tabs on her pal's progress.
"I knew," says Britton, "because we're very close, I knew that she was going in [for the role]. Then she found out it was Jeff Reiner who was directing it. Jeff Reiner was our producer and director for years,...

I mentioned the production of When Angels Sing a few weeks ago: Tim McCanlies (Secondhand Lions) is directing this adaptation of a Turk Pipkin story, and it's produced by Elizabeth Avellan. The cast includes many familiar faces from the music industry: Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett, Sara Hickman and Harry Connick, Jr., plus Connie Britton.
When Angels Sing was recently shooting over in Northwest Park by Shoal Creek Blvd. in the Allandale neighborhood. I found some photos on Flickr from the shoot. Jim Lallen, who lives in Allandale, graciously gave me permission to publish some of his photos here. He was only able to take a few before someone on the production shooed him away.
In the above photo ("Action"), you can see Kris Kristofferson preparing to shoot a scene with a younger actor, barely visible -- I am wondering if this is Houston actor Chandler Canterbury, credited on...
