John Oliver spotlighted Simu Liu and John Boyega on Last Week Tonight for their beginnings as stock photo models.
In the last segment of the HBO show, Oliver talked about stock photos, noting that that’s how the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars got their start.
“Stock photos provide an income stream, not just for photographers, but also for actors starting out,” Oliver said.
Oliver cut to a photo of Boyega in a picture posing as a student. The late-night show host then presented Liu with a series of photos “pointing at a laptop, looking at the camera during a group project and exercising in a totally normal, not at all unhinged way.” Oliver was poking fun at the way Liu was posing while seemingly exercising for the picture.

Showtime's "The Curse" stars Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder as two newlyweds who attempt to launch a house-flipping HGTV series in the town of Española, Nm. However, their show, and their efforts to start a family, become complicated by the presence of what might just be a curse.
The premise might sound a bit absurd, but it also may ring a few bells if you've ever seen any of television's many, many house-flipping and home renovation shows. From HGTV's "Flip or Flop" and "Property Brothers" to Netflix's "Tiny House Nation" and "Dream Home Makeover," it's clear the public has a never-ending appetite for renovation and real-estate-related television. Meanwhile, Stone and Fielder's characters themselves might bring to mind another famous couple in the televised home improvement business - Chip and Joanna Gaines, who cohosted the HGTV show "Fixer Upper" from 2013 to 2018. From there, they launched their own media company called...

Zooey Deschanel had a breakup scare early on in her relationship with Jonathan Scott!
In a new interview, the 45-year-old Property Brothers star dished about a time his 43-year-old actress fiancée thought he was ghosting her when they were first starting to date.
Get the scoop inside…
“We talked or texted every single day, I think, and still have every day since we’ve met, except for the [time] I went up on a packed trip up into the middle of the Rocky Mountains, where there was no cell service,” Jonathan told People. “She thought I was just blowing her off because I didn’t respond for, what, three days or something?”
After that trip though, she received “the very first text I sent when I came out of the mountains,” he said. “I had recorded a video of a song she sent me and I showed the Rockies and everything.

It wasn’t during her first date with Jonathan Scott that Zooey Deschanel recognized the Property Brothers star as “the one.” In fact, the New Girl alum knew before their first date even began they were a match. What Deschanel described as a “dream” move on her now-fiancé’s part and how they had instant “chemistry.”
Jonathan’s ‘schedule’ for the first date ‘impressed’ Zooey
Scott and Deschanel, who met in 2019 while filming Carpool Karaoke (more on that later), had a three-part first date. They kicked it off with dinner followed by a visit to an escape room and, finally, karaoke.
But it wasn’t the sheer volume of activities Deschanel found impressive. Rather, Scott gave her a schedule for the evening.
“The very first date we went on, you were impressed because I sent you a schedule,” Scott recalled in an October 2023 People interview. “I was like, ‘Oh my God.

In Investigating Discovery+, Primetimer staffers and contributors comb through the Discovery+ catalog to identify hidden gems and take a closer look at breakout series.
At first glance, there are two genres that seem to dominate the Discovery+ library: true crime and home renovation. Deep dives into salacious stories under the ID banner, like The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, gain attention from social media chatter, and HGTV series like House Hunters, Home Town, and Property Brothers are household names (pun not intended). But there’s much more to the relatively new streamer than talking head interviews with detectives and way too much shiplap.

From the outside, Canadian television is having a moment. Over the past 18 months, major streaming services — Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+, Disney+ and Apple TV+ — have established Northern presences via offices, execs or PR teams.
Canadian broadcasters are also stepping up. During upfronts and a series of meetings in Toronto last week, public broadcaster CBC boasted more than 4,000 hours of new programming. Bell Media confirmed an additional 210 hours of English and French-language original content, bolstering its original library to more than 1,000 hours. Corus Entertainment announced 25 new and returning series across its brands.
Even Rogers Sports & Media, which has historically commissioned fewer hours of originals than its competitors, confirmed original programming for the Omni channel and the return of “Canada’s Got Talent” and “Hudson & Rex” while announcing the upcoming “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent.”
According to Canadian producers however, getting a TV series off the ground in Canada is harder than ever.

In 1998, Glen Salzman and Katherine Buck launched Montreal-based Cineflix Media with one of its first series, “Dogs with Jobs.” Unable to secure Canadian financing, they pitched the series at the Banff World Media Festival to international broadcasters during a market simulation session.
From there, the company produced five seasons of the factual series, which continues to sell internationally. More impressively, it was the beginning of Cineflix growing from a company with three factual shows into one of Canada’s largest independent producers, with creative, production and distribution arms in Montreal, Toronto, New York, London and Dublin.
Over the years, Cineflix has brought marquee talent and shows like “Property Brothers,” “American Pickers” and “Mayday: Air Disaster” to global audiences. Today, the group includes Cineflix Productions, Cineflix Rights, and Cineflix Studios, as well as joint venture companies Buccaneer, Connect3 Media, Husk Media and Shiny Screens Entertainment.

“What We Do in the Shadows” is in the hunt for more Emmy nominations this year after racking up a healthy collective 17 bids for its past three seasons.
This FX comedy series from Jemaine Clement, who adapted his and Taika Waititi‘s 2014 film of the same name, follows four vampire roommates living in modern-day New York while being recorded by a documentary crew. Matt Berry (Laszlo), Natasia Demetriou (Nadja), Kayvan Novak (Nandor), and Mark Proksch (Colin Robinson) are the vampires in question, assisted by Nandor’s familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén).
“What We Do in the Shadows” features dark humor, silly, slapstick comedy, plenty of satire, and a bucket load of puns — all shepherded by the central trio of lovable characters. This week, HBO Max faded to black — and was reborn as Max. But many people are still wondering: Why did Warner Bros. Discovery decide to change the name?
HBO, after all, remains a solid-gold brand representing premium-quality original TV shows, going back decades, from “The Sopranos” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to “Game of Thrones” and “Succession.” Meanwhile, Max, as observers have pointed out, is a pretty generic name from a branding standpoint.
Here are the two basic reasons Warner Bros. Discovery chose to excise HBO from the HBO Max with the relaunch:
To signal a broader programming mix: HBO Max was positioned as the successor to HBO, but from the beginning included more than just what was on HBO proper. With Max, Wbd has stuffed in a slew of nonfiction programming from the legacy Discovery Communications side of the house — Max features 35,000-plus hours of content, more than doubling the...

Zooey Deschanel loves to cook. Her specialties include risotto and various French dishes she learned from visiting family overseas.
Even so, her new Max food series, “What Am I Eating?,” is not about her life in the kitchen. “I didn’t want to do a show where it’s like, ‘I’m an actor – watch me cook!’” Deschanel told me Monday night at a dinner celebrating the “What Am I Eating?” premiere. “Nobody wants to see me do that.”
Except maybe her boyfriend, “Property Brothers” star Jonathan Scott. “Whenever someone says something to me like, ‘How was your pandemic?’ I always say, ‘I was living my best life,’” he said. “She is gourmet. She is a great chef.”

This morning, Warner Bros. Discovery officially transformed HBO Max into Max.
The rebranded and refreshed streaming service, which was first unveiled in April at an event on the company’s Burbank lot, features a slate of new original programming (known as Max Originals) and an updated user interface that includes content hubs for HBO and HGTV.
The transition began rolling out late in the evening on Monday and early Tuesday, which did result in a small spike of user issues reported on Down Detector in the early hours around 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. The rollout is expected to continue into Tuesday across the U.S.
HBO Max subscribers don’t need to do anything to transition

Max is finally here. Back in April, Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced the company's new streaming service, which combines the libraries of HBO Max and Discovery+, completely replacing the former. Shows like "Succession" and "The White Lotus" will live side by side with "Property Brothers" and "Flip or Flop." In a press release, the company described Max as an "enhanced streaming service." The new website, max.com, launched May 23.
News of plans for a joint streaming service first broke in August 2022, with CEO David Zaslav sharing it during a quarterly earnings call. Both HBO Max and Discovery+ reach a combined 92 million subscribers, per the quarterly earnings report, and the company hopes to reach 130 million global subscribers by 2025. Jean-Briac Perrette, Discovery's CEO, said at the time that he hoped the new streamer will be the best of both worlds. "We recognize that both of our existing products have shortcomings," he said during the call.

Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s bulked-up and revamped streaming service that takes the place of HBO Max, makes it U.S. debut on Tuesday (May 23). Max makes several subtle enhancements aimed at making the service easier to use and more engaging — while execs say it should also be more stable than HBO Max.
According to the company, a “large portion” of HBO Max subscribers will have their apps automatically updated to Max — while in some cases, users will be prompted to download an updated Max app. If all goes as planned, HBO Max subscribers will have their previous plan info, profiles, avatars, and settings including “Continue Watching” and “My List” items migrated over to the new Max.

Drew and Jonathan Scott, the identical twins and popular hosts of HGTV’s Property Brothers, are debuting their new preschool series, Builder Brothers Dream Factory, on Treehouse in their native Canada on March 26.
Inspired by the Canadian reality TV stars, the animated series from Sinking Ship Entertainment and Scott Brothers Entertainment and distributed by Nelvana portrays the Scott brothers as a pair of regular kids using their imagination, creativity and heart to help friends and solve problems in the neighborhood.
The Scotts, who are based in Los Angeles, broke out on HGTV with their first namesake series in 2011, and their TV series output includes spinoffs Buying & Selling and At Home and the competition show Brother vs. Brother, which are produced in part by their Scott Brothers Entertainment shingle.
But the original Treehouse series Builder Brothers Dream Factory that includes best friends Mel and Ayana follows the Scott brothers having children of their own.

Under the three-year talent pact, the twins with a gift for renovation and real estate will produce more episodes of both “Property Brothers: Forever Home” and “Celebrity Iou.” Through their Scott Brothers Entertainment banner, the Scotts will also develop more exclusive home-related series and digital content in partnership with the Warner Bros. In his incendiary Emmy-nominated Netflix comedy special The Closer, Dave Chappelle reminds his audience that Twitter may be an influential force, but it often reflects a distorted version of real life. Throughout the special, in which everything from the pandemic to police shootings is fair game, he jokes about the blowback he received from the LGBTQ community and their allies after a previous special where he cracked about anti-trans violence. As Chappelle makes very clear in The Closer, he doesn’t care if trans people or other detractors use social media to try to cancel him. “Twitter is not a real place,” he says. And the Television Academy apparently agrees.
The Closer has earned two Emmy nominations, one for directing and one for prerecorded variety special. For the latter, Chappelle is up against a rather wholesome set of contenders, including an Adele concert,...

Remember Tommy Lee’s dream of a boudoir playground in “Pam & Tommy,” and how the racy redesign led to his sex tape being stolen? That’s what Rose does for a living — well, except she doesn’t steal her clients’ personal belongings.
When she’s not planning other folks’ bedrooms, Rose is in her own home writing a series of erotic novels based on that career. It was under the guise of pitching those books as a scripted series that her manager approached Adam Sher, president of ITV America. But Sher had another idea: Why not turn her life and work into a TV-ma-rated reality show?
And so Netflix’s “How to Build a Sex Room” was born. In the show, Rose visits people who have lost some of the...
