As Legend hits UK cinemas, Brian Helgeland talks to us about working with Tom Hardy, and why he wanted to make a movie and not a TV series.
Brian Helgeland's career began in horror, as he wrote the scripts for such genre pieces as A Nightmare On Elm Sreet 4 and 976-evil. But it was his adapted screenplay for the 1997 thriller La Confidential that really put Helgeland on the Hollywood map; netting him an Oscar and receiving rave reviews, its success paved the way for his more recent career, which included the hit thriller Payback (1999), Helgeland's big-screen debut as a director, and his script for the acclaimed drama Mystic River (2003).
Helgeland's latest film is Legend, a British gangster thriller about the exploits of the Kray twins. Rising from London's underworld to become unlikely celebrities at the height of the swinging 60s, Ron and Reggie Kray were more famous as nightclub...

Richard Johnson (far right) in the 1963 supernatural masterpiece "The Haunting" with Claire Bloom, Russ Tamblyn and Julie Harris.

Cinema Retro mourns the loss of our friend, actor Richard Johnson, who has passed away at age 87. Johnson was a classically trained actor, having attended Rada and was also one of the founding members of the Royal Shakespeare Company. His acting career was interrupted by service in the Royal Navy during WWII but Johnson resumed his profession at the end of the war. He alternated between playing small parts in feature films and leading roles in stage productions. In 1959, he got his first significant screen role starring with Frank Sinatra and young Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson in the WWII film "Never So Few". He was initially offered the role of James Bond but turned down the opportunity. He later told Cinema Retro that he had no regrets because...

The legendary Rowan Atkinson will be French detective Jules Maigret for two new ITV telly movies…
Interesting news, this – ITV have announced two TV movies based on fictional French detective Jules Maigret. In the starring role will be Mr Rowan Atkinson. We assume you’re as intrigued as we are to see how this one turns out.
If you’re not familiar, Jules Maigret is the protagonist of Georges Simenon’s series of detective novels set in 1950s Paris. It’s a statement of confidence, surely, that ITV have announced two films from the off.
The first of these films will be Maigret Sets A Trap, followed by Maigret’s Dead Man. Treasure Island and Marple director Stewart Harcourt will helm both of them. This choice makes us think that a more serious tone than Atkinson’s Mr Bean and Johnny English exploits will be on the cards here, which should be interesting.

Cinema, as Jean-Luc Godard wrote, is truth 24 times a second. Documentaries both prove and disprove the point; but the truth is their strongest weapon. Here, Guardian and Observer critics pick the 10 best
• Top 10 arthouse movies
• Top 10 family movies
• Top 10 war movies
• Top 10 teen movies
• Top 10 superhero movies
• Top 10 westerns
• More Guardian and Observer critics' top 10s
10. Man With a Movie Camera
To best understand this 1929 silent documentary, one ought to know that its director, the exotically named "Dziga Vertov", was actually born David Abelevich Kaufman in 1896. Some say the name derives from the Russian word for spinning top, but the pseudonym is more likely an onomatopeic approximation of the sound made by the twin reels of film as the director ran them backwards and forwards through his flatbed editor. For Vertov, film was something physical, to be manipulated by man, and yet, paradoxically, he also saw it as a medium...

Get past the title, and uwantme2killhim? is a movie with one or two good tricks up its sleeve...
Produced by Bryan Singer (yes, that one), and directed by the 2005 Amityville Horror/countless adverts helmer Andrew Douglas, uwantme2killhim is a solid, well constructed story about teenage isolation. Its mysteries play out well, resolved quickly and satisfactorily, though it never quite realises its potential. Based on a true story, its focus on one of its subjects is both a boon and a problem for the movie.
Mark (Jamie Blackley), is a popular 16 year old boy. We see a little of his life before the start of the main narrative, but not enough to really get to know him. uwantme2killhim came with a free pamphlet detailing the cast and crew, and their thoughts on the film, and here the idea of Mark peaking too soon is brought up.

Spanish director dies following a stroke: Best known for his nearly two hundred underground, "exploitation" films "I think I was born because my father and my mother had sex ... ." Nope, that has nothing to do with the anti-censorship lectured delivered by Oz the Great and Powerful and Interior. Leather Bar's James Franco online. The words above were uttered by another Franco, a Spaniard. No, not the foaming-at-the-mouth right-wing military ruler Francisco Franco, but multitasking filmmaker Jesús Franco, aka Jess Franco aka dozens of other aliases, including those in honor of jazz performers Clifford Brown and James P. Johnson. His oeuvre included about 200 films, among them The White Slave, The Sexual History of O, Macumba Sexual, , Emmanuelle Exposed, Vampyros Lesbos, The Mistresses of Dr. Jekyll, and White Cannibal Queen. The director died today in Malaga, a city in southern Spain, after suffering a stroke. According to reports, he had never truly...

Coexist, the sophomore album from xx, is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2012.
With the sweeping success of the band's debut effort, 2009's xx, The xx -- Romy Madley-Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie Smith -- is hoping that lightning strikes twice for the forthcoming album.
The British indie rockers recently released the lead single from Coexist. The slow-tempo track -- "Angles" -- begins with a soft guitar lead and progresses into love song that is both moving and seemingly detached. Last week, The xx debuted a more ambient track, "Swept Away," at a show in Los Angeles. The band also unveiled two other new tracks, "Sunset" and "Reunion," at the same gig.
Listen to the new tracks below.
Here's the official Coexist track list:
1. Angels
2. Chained
3. Fiction
4. Try
5. Reunion
6. Sunset
7. Missing
8. Tides
9. Unfold
10. Swept Away

Yo ho thar mateys, there be yet anudder adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson.s Treasure Island. This one be mini-series length. It be helped that the novel arrr in the public domain. This one sports a .as appeared on SyFy. sticker on the front which usually be the kiss of death, but it turns out to be more shipshape than SyFy Mega-Long John Silver vs. Jim Hawkins-asaurus. The recent widow Meg Hawkins (Shirley Henderson) and her son Jim (Toby Regbo) have inherited the floundering Admiral Benbow Inn. Things seem lost until they run aside of Billy Bones (David Harewood) who takes up residence in the Inn and injects some money into it. Their tenant is more than a hassle...

Syfy has now (finally) ordered a pilot for the adaptation of young adult sci-fi book The Lotus Caves to be entitled High Moon, executive produced by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Mockingbird Lane) and Robert Halmi Sr (Treasure Island, Neverland). We’ve been telling you about this project since April 2010, and it was part of Syfy‘s upfront presentation back in April of this year.
Deadline broke the news last night, reporting that it was expected to begin production in Vancouver this fall. “This is a fresh and compelling vision of an exotic new world driven by character, intrigue and greed,” Syfy’s president original content Mark Stern said.
Here’s what Syfy said about the project back in April:
High Moon – Based on the novel, The Lotus Caves, by John Christopher, this imaginative, out-of-this-world series explores a world where the countries of Earth have established colonies to mine the Moon’s resources.

As I previously stated just two weeks ago in my review of Disney’s take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure story Treasure Island, it’s hard to go wrong when you have such an enduring tale as the framework. That grace extends even as far as made-for-tv Syfy movies, and it actually manages to lift up the production considerably. Directed by Steven Barron, Syfy’s latest iteration stars Eddie Izzard, Elijah Wood, and a few more notable faces in a two-part, three-hour epic tale of swashbuckling that goes a long way towards redeeming Syfy movies after Neverland, their take on the Peter Pan mythos, crashed and burned. For what it is, Treasure Island makes a lot of a modest TV-movie budget and takes just the right amount of time building the story and characters for a fully fleshed out update of Stevenson’s novel.

Most of the news for Our Kind of Shows came out during Comic-Con, but an excellent piece of news came from NBC today, suddenly and without warning, like the title character himself: Dracula will be swooping straight on to our screens. No pilot, no stress, straight to series.
It will star the man formerly known as the gorgeous version of Henry VIII on The Tudors, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and will be set in Victorian England. Ten episodes have been ordered, though it isn’t clear if that means it will conclude at the end of the ten or if that’s only the initial order. Here are the details:

Missing nominations, missing shows. Nevertheless, shaking our fists of fury into the air does no good, so let us celebrate those wonderful shows that did receive Emmy nominations. Congratulations to big nomination winners American Horror Story, who received 17, tied for the most of any program, and to Game of Thrones, who received 11.
As expected, our shows received a great number of nominations in the special effects categories, but also showed well in others, including Best Drama. American Horror Story‘s inclusion in the Miniseries categories has proven to be somewhat controversial, but TV Guide quotes TV academy chairman Bruce Rosenblum’s response:
The rules of the academy are pretty clear. If a show qualifies in more than one category that producer is entitled to choose which category they want to submit. The American Horror Story example is unique. The way the show is designed, it’s a very close-ended series this year.

TNT has ordered a pilot for "The Last Ship," a post-apocalyptic action series based on the 1988 novel by William Brinkley and executive produced by blockbuster king Michael Bay. Having announced his first major venture into television in May, Bay now seems to be, er, all aboard the idea of small screen projects. And waterborne ones at that -- "Black Sails," which has been greenlit for a full season at Starz, is a "Treasure Island" prequel about 18th century pirates, while "The Last Ship" follows the crew of a naval destroyer after a global catastrophe wipes out more of the Earth's population, leaving them to "confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they are among the only survivors." The pilot for "The Last Ship" was written by Hank Steinberg (creator and showrunner for "Without a Trace") and Steven Kane (writer/co-executive producer on "The Closer"). ...

I’m never quite sure how to feel when I hear Michael Bay is working on some new project. He has this way of making movies that is at once exhilarating while being incredibly frustrating. But that’s his films. How would Bay’s methods work on a television series? We may be close to finding out just that. Bay has begun work on an apocalyptic project for TNT, of which a pilot has been ordered. Once again I’m torn. Will Bay’s particular style spoil a potentially promising series, or will the episodic format focus his almost Add like filmmaking skills. It’s quite the conundrum.
As it stands, Bay may not have that much of an affect on it. According to EW.com he is just a producer, thus he will not have the privilege of directing the series, at least not as of this time. It...

The suits up at AMC must have had an emergency meeting not too long ago: “Okay, men–and you too, of course, Marjorie–we have been hitting it out of the park lately with Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Killing, you know the list. What worries me–what worries our shareholders–is we don’t have enough crappy, over-done reality-tv programming to undercut the quality scripted programs we’ve been showing. I want five bullshit ideas on my desk by 5 Pm or you’re all fired!” And of those ideas, I guarantee you half of them were along the lines of “Dumb rednecks do stupid things and talk funny,” since Cmt has gotten all uppity with their reality shows. So now we have Small Town Security, the show that’s like a Larry the Cable Guy routine come to life. The only real bright spot in yet another god-awful “unscripted...

Fourteen years after Armageddon, Michael Bay has another apocalyptic project in the works — this time for television. TNT has ordered a pilot for drama series The Last Ship and Bay is set to produce.
After a couple decades of success on the big screen, Bay is now turning his attention to TV. He and his company Platinum Dunes also got a straight-to-series order from Starz in May for another sea-set project: a Treasure Island prequel titled Black Sails.

Britain's The xx are a preternaturally talented pop band, noted for delivering emotional melodies over minimalist soundscapes.
With "Angels," a new song from their upcoming sophomore album, "Coexist," which will be released in September on Young Turks Records, the band proves once again that less can be more -- so, so much more.
Scroll Down For Tour Dates
A twinkling guitar lead threads sparsely around a rich, yearning vocal, a scattered pulse of drums beneath. The effect is airy and moving while remaining somewhat chilly and detached.
Like a love idealized but not acted on, 'Angels' seems to hinge on the possibilities of an endless slew of "what ifs." The listener, the daydreamer in such a scenario, is left hanging on its soft hook, eager for more.

It was a totally different Situation in Las Vegas last night ... where the "Jersey Shore" star celebrated his birthday without any of trademarks making an appearance. Sitch turned 30 back on July 4 and finally got around to celebrating in Sin City at Señor Frogs, located inside the Treasure Island hotel. The night was very low key -- not only did Sitch not gel up his air or flaunt his abs ... but our spies say he didn't touch a drop of alcohol.

The Samurai Trilogy (Criterion) Director Hiroshi Inagaki’s sprawling epic filmed from 1954-56 is an early Japanese Technicolor masterpiece, rivaling the scope of filmmakers like David Lean and Luchino Visconti. Toshiro Mifune, Japan’s greatest actor, stars as real-life swordsman, artist and writer Musashi Miyamoto, following his growth from callow youth to disciplined warrior. The three films: the Oscar winning “Musashi Miyamoto,” “Duel at Ichijoji Temple,” and “Duel at Ganryu Island” are an incredible story of human growth, tender love and sublime, blood-soaked action. Elijah Wood is well used to taking part in screen adaptations of books that readers hold dear to their hearts. One of the most distinctive faces of Lord of the Rings, he's taken on Frodo duties once more in The Hobbit, currently being filmed in New Zealand.
Elijah Wood goes feral for Ben Gunn
In the meantime, he's taken on the role of Ben Gunn in the TV adaptation of Treasure Island, alongside a luminary cast led by Eddie Izzard, Donald Sutherland and Rupert Penry-Jones. Here, he talks about getting back into a tunic, desert island luxuries, and a bit more gossip on The Hobbit...
Why did you want to be involved in this adaptation?

Yesterday we showed you the first trailer for Revolution, the excellent-looking new series coming to NBC in the fall. Today at the official NBC upfronts they made an announcement about another show we’ll be watching: Crossbones. It’s about the pirate colony run by Blackbeard, which also happens to be “the first functioning democracy in the Americas.”
This is not to be confused with another pirate series, the Starz Treasure Island prequel Black Sails that we told you about a week ago. Hmm, last year fairy tales, this year pirates. We are totally good with that. Here’s hoping that the pirate horde is as successful as the fairy tale gang, especially Crossbones, given that this series creator, Neil Cross, was the creator of the fully excellent British crime drama Luther.

Benedict Cumberbatch is "startlingly aware" of the slashfic of him and Martin Freeman. “It’s cool… I suppose my bodily proportions are quite flattering. I’m ripped, doing something I wouldn’t normally do with my body, or having done to it, involving Watson. So that’s as far as I’ll hit about that one, but it’s all there on the web if you want to find it.”
Over at NewNowNext, Sexpert Conner Habib is back with a new question. It's way too far for us to run here, but as he notes (with a great sight gag), there are differences in how gay guys and girls and straight guys view certain aspects of sex.
Evidently the upcoming wedding for Northstar is dramatically boosting presales of Astonishing X-Men.

We told you last month that NBC‘s reboot of The Munsters, entitled Mockingbird Lane, had been delayed due to casting issues. We’re very happy to report that they are now in fact in the process of securing a casting coup: Eddie Izzard (Oceans 13, United States of Tara, Treasure Island) as Grandpa.
TVLine is reporting that the popular British standup comedian is “nearing a deal” for the role in the pilot, written by Pushing Daisies‘ Bryan Fuller, that is said to be a “visually spectacular one hour drama.”
We’re really hoping that both are true; that Eddie Izzard will be Grandpa, and that the show will be a visually spectacular one hour drama. Izzard could definitely bring an entirely different vibe to the show. And we know that Bryan Fuller has credibility on the “visually spectacular” front, as the Pushing Daisies set was total eye candy.

Briefly: Paramount and J.J. Abrams' company Bad Robot are putting together a new mystery movie, and have tapped Brad Parker to direct. Parker made The Diary of Lawson Oxford, and also worked as second-unit director on Let Me In. Keeping things in the family, Let Me In director Matt Reeves will produce this currently untitled action film, alongside Abrams and Bryan Burk. The script is by actor and writer Michael Gilio (who wrote a draft [1] of Carter Beats the Devil) but we've got no details on it right now. Gilio also wrote a draft of Treasure Island that had Paul Greengrass attached for a moment, and he wrote a script called The Interventionalist with which Alexander Payne was involved back in 2010. He also had the script Big Hole on the 2008 Black List. None of that stuff is produced yet, however, so unless you track down the feature Kwik Stop,...

Last night Sky One’s two-part swashbuckling sea voyage Treasure Island concluded. The show picked up immediately where it had left off the previous night and continued in the same fashion – good performances from a great cast, but lacking in action and anything of interest.
The story picks up with Doctor Livesey (Daniel Mays), Squire Trelawney (Rupert Penry-Jones) and Captain Smollett (Philip Glenister) all stranded on the island without the map. Long John Silver (Eddie Izzard) struggles to keep his rum soaked band of misfits under control on the ship as it sits in the waters just off the island firing it’s canons at the beach. As Jim (Toby Regbo) tries to regroup with the others on the beach they assume his alliance with Silver and tie him up. When Silver arrives to ask for the map it becomes clear that neither party have it.
