Strangely Funny
metroskyradio8 March 2012
Australia's Danger 5 is strangely funny. The special effects are right out of The Thunder Birds and cheesy, and are meant to be. The jokes are corny, funny, and rely on a lot of sight gags. Needless to say Hitlers talking dog is a bad puppet character that is really hilarious and the episode with Nazi Dinosaurs (who were armed) had me laughing so hard I couldn't get my breath. Even things in the background are funny. The "Danger 5" are spies of International makeup. A lot of language is actual French & German so the show is subtitled and even this is funny.

Danger 5 is Thunder Birds meets Allo, Allo, with a large dose of Team America World Police, bad scripting thrown in for good measure. I watched this Australian TV import with my wife, who has no sense of humor, and even she thought the show was entertaining. I'll leave it at that !

Absolutely brilliant, but not for everyone
forrestvaughan7 September 2016
I absolutely love this show. It's witty and clever and right on the nose. The model car and plane fight scenes put the hilarious camp over the top but it remains interesting and the novelty of the 60s TV show theme is not quick to grow stale. I know people who don't like this show for various reasons and I certainly think that you have to have the right sense of humor for it, but when you do, its a total riot. The second season is not quite as appealing to me as it takes a turn for the random more often than not but I see its merits and it still has me laughing often enough. I think that this is one of the most underrated shows of all time and cannot recommend the first season enough If you don't like it by the first two episodes however, it will probably never appeal to you.

I just got my Danger 5 patch in the mail the other day.

DANGERou5ly FUNNY!
espurious7 March 2012
Comedy shows can take a while to find their feet but DANGER 5, an international group hell bent on taking down those damn Nazis and their nefarious plans, hits the ground running, shooting and punching.

It has the look and feel of a 60's show even to go as far as having cheap looking sets and 'bad' special effects. The hard stereotyped cast play it (mostly) straight which allows the show to be camp, but not overly so.

The laughs are hard & frequent and the action is fast paced, you never know what's coming next.

If you like girls, guns, espionage, Hitler's dog and the perfect recipe for a Fruit Madrid, then this is the show for you.

I've only seen the first two episodes but if the writers manage to keep this level of pace and comedy throughout the season, it's going to be a show that everyone will be talking about.

Absurd 70s Camp
ben-798-60475812 January 2015
The ridiculousness of this show is on a whole other level. This show looks and feels as though it was shot in the 70s. There's nazi dinosaurs, power ranger style mech robots, corrupt police dogs, mind control crystals and the lost city of atlantis. At one point they shoot someone through the telephone. All of the special effects are done with dolls or miniatures and make to look as intentionally corny as possible. The entire premise of the show revolves around killing Hitler, something they fail to do constantly and make mediocre accomplishments, usually foiling hitlers current hare brained plans while he escapes unscathed to plot again.

The humor in this show centers not so much around punchlines or jokes but the sheer absurdity of what is going on. At one point Hitler goes into hiding in a high school and danger 5 has to go undercover, 21 jump street style. Somehow every character who dies lives conveniently long enough to describe their perfect drink to the bartender dude in detail so he can make it to honor their memory. Ilsa speaks exclusively in Russian which makes no difference to the fact that everyone seems to understand her and respond in English as if she was speaking the same language. And every episode ends in one of those bond-esque cocktail parties, until the episode when they start doing cocaine and then its basically a cracked out version of their usual cocktail parties. Everything is so, like, groovy man.

Don't try to make sense, just see if you laugh
jaywensley200419 March 2015
Reminiscent of "A Fistful of Yen" (from Kentucky Fried Movie) and looking like "Mighty Morphing Power Rangers," "Danger 5" succeeds at one of TV and movie making's toughest goals; making a deliberately bad production that doesn't overshoot the mark.

"These two are part of a team the Allies put together to irritate me."-Adolf Hitler in "Danger 5."

Japanese Super Soldiers with swastikas on their helmets.

Armed dinosaurs.

A gold plated Panzer tank.

All this and more, played straight and at a pace that would challenge the focus of a 30 Rock fan. Doesn't seem funny out of context? That's the genius of "Danger 5." The context is hallucinogenic and yet the stories have a peculiar coherence that allow Eagle-headed commanding officers to seem both reasonable and laugh out loud funny.

Like I said, don't try to make sense of it. But watch a few episodes and there's a good chance you'll create your own way of "getting it." And if it doesn't make you laugh, for goodness sakes don't watch, because there's no "deeper meaning" in "Danger 5."

Literally the greatest thing ever
EbonWolf19 March 2015
My best friend and i found this on Netflix... we did not expect what was about to happen. From the first episode on we were laughing out loud to the point of tears. I do not remember ever having seen anything this amazing in my life. I've shown it to several friends since then, and re-watched the first season multiple times and it keeps getting better every. single. time. Very similar in tone to Monty Python and the Mighty Boosh. I admit, season 2 is not nearly as hilarious as the first, bit it is still amazing and ball-shatteringly funny. Also Ilsa is literally the hottest thing, ever. 10/10: would watch on a desert island for the rest of my life.

The Greatest black humour TV show in history!
drd-0721715 July 2018
Season 1 of Danger 5 may be the most perfectly executed comedy show in TV history. The minds that came up with this concept are genius's. The outrageous black humour is just enough without being being too offensive. Ilsa speaks Russian but everyone can understand her. Hitler and the rest of his henchmen are portrayed as cartoon baddies. Danger 5's boss is an Eagle. When featured characters die they always give a drink recipe. I have watched each episode dozens of times, it never gets old. I wish I could say the same for season 2. The edge they had in Season 1 was rounded off to an absurd degree. It was almost like the Best Boy on the first season became the director but didn't understand what made the first season so good.

Bad on purpose is sometimes a good thing!
picturetaker25 March 2015
Shows this lame and campy are not easy to make. It takes a lot of time and thought to make it this way. Especially when made with cheese on purpose like Danger 5 clearly is. The amount of effort that goes into making this show is astounding. And is risky because it could totally backfire after so much is invested in it.

On Netflix it has a low rating because people who watch it don't get the satire that it is trying to portray. They likely think its old and lame. But really, it began in 2011 and if anyone thinks its not made like this on purpose, they're crazier then some of the set designs and characters. Speaking of characters, Nazi Dinosaurs? The mere concept is hilarious and ridiculous at the same time! Fortunately on IMDb people seem to get it.

Danger 5 is cheesy. Its campy. Its lame. Its terribly bad on purpose. Its original. Its SO SO GOOD!

The BEST, seriously, not hyperbole
dkoemans10 April 2015
If you aren't watching this series you have to ask yourself, why do I even have eyes? Because if you aren't using them to watch this then you are doing it wrong. Natzis(sp), dinosaurs, babes, guns, puppets, international intrigue, it has it all.

In all seriousness it is a loving send-up of a dozen different genre's and eras that on paper looks like it would be a disaster but by some miracle it is amazing. The cast is totally committed to the insane plot while never winking at the camera. The writing is totally beside the point since the story is only exists to serve the various set pieces. Worth watching alone because it isn't anything like what you've seen before.

Best Thing on Australian TV
ryanpotato718 April 2012
I first watched Danger 5 on YouTube, the 'Diamond Girls' mini web-series. I immediately fell in love. I was even more excited when at the end of the last of the web-series there was the announcement that it would air on SBS One in February!

Each week I tuned into SBS to watch this hilarious show and I was never disappointed. The running jokes were always funny, like when the Eagle headed director came in to give the team their mission and Claire would interrupt, or how when Hitler escaped he always dived out the same window. I always found it funny and never found myself checking the guide or wondering off for some tea.

If you like over-the-top stories and action, definitely watch this television show. For anyone who has seen Black Dynamite and liked it, I guarantee you will love this.

The bright side of wandering around Netflix
Mr-Fusion20 February 2017
Remember that short-lived MTV puppet show, "Super Adventure Team"? "Danger 5" reminds me of that, at least in spirit; and that's a positive comparison. The bad dubbing, cheap model props and thrown- together sets really sell the '60s spy show parody. Most of this is completely absurd, and the characters just take it in stride; I think that's why a lot of the humor works. Also, Hitler. And the Colonel is an eagle-headed ball-buster; he was actually mu favorite part and I was disappointed to see his involvement come to an end.

Makes you wonder what other sorts of weirdness comes out of Australia.

Killing Hitler Was Never This Funny
Eumenides_026 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Creators Dario Russo and David Ashby first caught my attention with their International Spiderman! series, the online adventures of, well, Italian Spiderman, a hilarious spoof of action, science fiction and horror '70s movie. What I loved especially about that show was the accuracy of the period - they even used a 16mm camera to capture the feel of this 'lost film'.

With Danger 5 they're carving a unique niche for themselves as satirists of '60s and '70s pop culture, TV shows and cinema. The series follows the five members of a special team on their missions in an absurd version of World War II, where Adolf Hitler has created a way of sexually transmitting Nazism!, has armed intelligent dinosaurs, has turned POWs into super-robots, operates from Casablanca-like clubs, has almost stolen all the world's monuments, and is protected by invulnerable diamond girls.

At the start of every episode the team is briefed by the eagle-headed Colonel, whose bullying of Claire, a stuck-up British officer, is always hilarious, as is his constant reminder that their mission is to 'kill Hitler!" Each member basically plays to national stereotypes: there's Jackson, the gung-ho American; Pierre, the joyful French who befriends everyone and makes mean martinis; Tucker, the square-jawed, all-American hero; and Ilsa, the tough-as-nails sexy Russian. They're all excellently played by a team of newcomers, who show great talent in playing their characters badly. Everything in the series is supposed to be bad and corny, from the acting to the absurd dialogue, down to the fake and cheap-looking sets and props. Likewise the Italians are all festive people, the British are all stiff upper lips, and regarding the Swiwss, well, we find out their blood is actually made of money. No surprise there really.

Also excellent is Carmine Russo as Adolf Hitler. Hitler hasn't been used this comically since The Producers. There's a running gag about Hitler and a window that never feels stale.

If you like spoofs of old shows, or if you're into the absurd humor of The Mighty Boosh, you ought to give Danger 5 a look. Its seven episodes won't disappoint.

Rediculous but.... fun in spots
bogus-bogus-one29 July 2020
This kind of reminds me of the movie "Iron Sky", similar sophomoric humor, which I don't mind. In this series Hitler and his minions survive thru the ages in spite of the best efforts of the "Danger 5" team. Every scene is totally ridiculous that is filled with politically incorrect imagery. There is something that could offend everyone.... IF taken seriously. (which I doubt anyone ever would). My only criticisms, why I didn't give more stars a.) if you binge watch an entire season, some of the "shticks" get old fast. b.) the overall sound quality is poor and excessive noise levels can get tiring Still, I thought it was OK if you want some cheap laughs - and you don't mind a lot of Nazi imagery.

A Mess with Too Many Ideas
tsc-6051018 October 2016
'Danger 5' is an attempt at an absurdist spoof of the myriad spy, war, and action movie tropes in our cultural consciousness. However in execution the show is a bizarre, self-indulgent and disjointed mess that never quite makes it to being clever or satirical and fails to make any more than superficial use of its source material.

'Danger 5' is the product of creator/writer/director/actors Dario Russo and David Ashby who we can only assume were given a Netflix series after some executive saw how much ad revenue their racist, sexist, one-joke self-published web series 'Italian Spiderman' (2008) made. As the show's auteurs, they probably saw films like 'Inglorious Basterds' or 'Team America: World Police' and, without understanding their satirical construction, thought it would be funny combine the two. The result, much like 'Italian Spiderman', is a painful, tediously amateurish production featuring actors attempting to create humor by overacting and mugging for the camera.

'Danger 5' is a show that is in no way original or distinct except in its terribleness and is an unworthy entrant into the wonderful worlds of absurdist and Australian humor. It is the single worst thing I have seen in the last 10 years and represents the only time I have ever yelled at my TV.

I would not recommend 'Danger 5'

You'll either love it or not get it! Funny homage to 1950s spy and espionage shows. I was hooked in the first few minutes of the pilot when the German Shepard spoke German.

Danger 5 might just be the greatest show I have ever seen.
recondlogan2 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
WARNING: If you do not enjoy corny and hilarious effects, story, and all out production, this is NOT for you.

Danger 5 is split upon 2 series. Series 1 is based upon World War 2, using a 60's style of filming it. A team named Danger 5 is set out to kill Adolf Hitler, and in doing so brings them to many bizarre places. Each character is based from a different country, which makes them unique in ways.

Series 2 is set in an 80's theme. The now-split up Danger 5 lives their lives until Hitler resurfaces and has a new master plan to conquer the Post World War 2 era.

This show is amazing and I highly recommend it if you enjoy cheesy hilarious comedy action.

Danger's Five Vs Hitler
soppiestcorgi938 February 2015
Danger 5 is a 2011 Australian television series produced by Dinosaur that is a mixture of 50's shows with The Naked Gun movies; the result is a very funny adventure of a group of five super spies serving the Allies against Hitler's Axis.

The humor of this series is very reminiscence of the cult web series Italian Spiderman, freely available on YouTube, this is not mere coincidence, because the creator of Italian Spiderman Dario Russo and David Ashby are the creator of Danger 5.

The heroes are the macho man Jackson(David Ashby),Ilsa a more than seductive Russian woman( Natasa Ristic), the leader of the group Tucker(Sean James Murphy), the intelligent but never listened to Claire(Amanda Simon's) and an agent with special bartender skills Pierre(Aldo Mignone).

Their interactions during the episodes are gold, every character is fleshed out during the episodes giving them personality, traits and even some little, but still interesting, backstories.

During the six episodes of the first season they fight against Hitler(Carmine Russo) in bizarre plots involving dinosaurs Nazis, powerful monsters(Kaijus) that feel straight from Power Rangers or even the dark powers of Hitler's himself in a casino.

There is a lot of visual gags and sound gags like Nazi flags on martinis, cheap sets and effects from the 50s serials, combination of different spoken languages and so, everything is played straight by all the actors so it's even more humorous because it's like the series is not self-aware. The attention to the detail is astounding, it's like everything came directly from the fifties, it's a perfect emulation of everything that made those shows great and not so-great.

There is a lot of references to old classic shows like the Japanese Super Sentai (Power Rangers in the west), Star Trek, Johnny Quest etc. You are always laughing and delighting yourself from all the craziness that is happening.

This series is an instant classic for me, my favorite episode is ""Hitler's Golden Murder Palace" because of how crazy the plot is and how funny everything rolls and my favorite scene is Jackson shooting a cigar to Ilsa mouth's using a handgun.

This has a nice desire to be different
StuOz30 April 2021
Oddball Australian series set in some sort of 1960s Mission Impossible/Thunderbirds world.

I am not the biggest situation comedy fan (but I love 1966 Batman) so I guess I am not the best person to review this material? As a lover of 1960s adventure/sci-fi shows, I welcomed Danger 5 with open arms. I responded to the show on a production level rather than the often slapstick comedy level.

The production match ups to that period are amazing. The cheap sets, cheap miniatures, dated costumes, dated dinosaur creatures - loved it all! In fact, until the end credits reveal the show was made in South Australia - it looks like a series from outside of Oz.

I did struggle a bit with the show after a couple of episodes as the slapstick humour was just not my thing. But others obviously loved the jokes so I feel it is rather me - not the show - that is the problem here.

As an Australian myself, I ask our film/TV industry to pay close attention to the positive reviews given to Danger 5. Oz has the ability to make more than soaps (Home and Away, etc), crime dramas (Underbelly) and bogan comedy. Let us hope we get another series along the lines of Danger 5, maybe a less slapstick show, but a show with the same daring desire to be different.

Such a Great show!!!!
jimmybsilva29 March 2015
One of the best show I have watched recently. Reminds me of team America but with people. Everyone I have recommended the show always says they have enjoyed it. The show is great I hope they make more seasons as I am hooked on it. The girls in the show are also really good looking and they do such a great job with the theme of the show. What intrigues me the most is that they made the show so different from other shows. The producers of the show did such a great job making it funny, sexy and a lot of action. This is the first time I review any movies or shows so that should show much I enjoyed this show. When you first watch it you look at the graphics and you think its low budget but then you start to realize that's part of the show and it you fade into the world of Danger 5, and like always "Kill Hitler!!!"

Above Average
coles_notes12 February 2024
Created and written by Dario Russo and David Ashby, directed by Russo, and starring Ashby this Australian surreal satire follows the titular Danger 5, and international group of five spies working for the Allies in an alternate history where WWII never ended and Hitler is still on the march towards world domination. Constantly ridiculous and always over-the-top, many will know this series simply from its "Sensible Chuckle" meme which often surfaces on the internet. Lots of campy splatter gore, crude humour, and explicit sexuality, but all filmed in a very 60s / 70s style and many action sequences being mocked with obvious miniatures or dummies. It gives the series a very camp Gerry Anderson vibe, especially late Anderson when he moved from pure supermarionation (puppeteering) into intermixing live action (The Protectors, UFO). The series strives to offend, and very often does, but its so ridiculous it gets away with it (mostly). The acting is always deliberately quite bad, and almost constant ADR (replacing dialog after the fact) for most everything spoken; mouths often don't match their words and some characters speak a whole different language altogether, only for everyone to understand them perfectly anyway. Its satire layered on satire in some of the best ways. The first season was good, dare I say great, I was roaring with laughter multiple times and always felt terrible doing it. Returning for a somewhat unplanned second series a few years later, things in my opinion don't go as well, the production quality seems to somewhat increase, which overall hurts more than helps, when you've already created something intentionally excessive going one step further often results is a bit of an unreasonable mess. Again, if you don't mind absurd offensiveness and in fact seek it out I would recommend.
