Three peace ambassadors have been murdered by the violent faction of the Fifth Column. The FBI and Erica are called to investigate. None of them are Tyler to Erica's relief. This follows coordinated suicide bombings. Tyler arrives and is appalled at the strung up bodies of his peace ambassador friends. She vows to find out who did it.
Ryan plays with his baby and Anna enters demanding answers about the murders and the abduction of Serena. Ryan blames Eli Cohn. Anna says to find him and points out Ryan's daughter is so peaceful when she's not in pain.
Jack, Hobbes, and Erica exposit- she's getting a new partner-- and they talk about trying to find Cohn, who's ex-Mossad, as Ryan arrives. Jack says some of the suicide bombers friends go to his church maybe he can just ask to meet him?
Back at FBI HQ Erica meets her hotshot new partner from D.C. and it turns out he's an old friend: Chris Broylan (sp?). They rib each other about trouble they got into at the academy. She's happy now. They dive into Fifth Column stuff and Chris wonders if Father Jack isn't some common denominator.
Anna and Marcus watch Chad report on the Fifth Column terrorist attacks. He reports that religious figures are also speaking out against the Vs, including a cardinal at the Vatican. Anna tells Marcus to go help the cardinal out on his "search for answers."
Anna picks up Chad on her way to... the Vatican. They make quite a noisy entrance. Some people cheer the sight of Anna. Chad reports live from the scene about Anna's meeting. She tells the cardinal she wants to invite missionaries on board the mothership to learn more. She mentions Jack's anti-V sermons and says he needs to condemn all clergy who do this before she can recommend his religion to the V's. He says he'll bring her request to the college. She notices a ring that one of the priests wears and asks Marcus to find out about it.
Father Jack makes his first overture with the folks in his congregation who are FC.
Erica and Chris chat in the car on the way to question Father Jack, who Erica calls a "big mouth" and notes they "hauled" him in before. Nice work on that cover, Erica!
They enter just as Jack has found a weird box on the altar with a DVD and a literal, bloody piece of a V in it. Ew. Jack closes it up and greets them and pretends to barely remember her. They question him about the peace ambassador murders and Eli Cohn. He says he's never heard of him. Jack feigns surprise that his name keeps popping up in FC events. They bring up his two enemy combatant kills in Iraq, weird for a chaplain. He says he's priest now and bids them farewell.
Jack, Erica, Ryan, and Hobbes watch the Cohn DVD, he invites Jack for a meeting and says he knows if he's alone. They figure out a way to track Jack without Cohn detecting it. They argue about aligning themselves with Cohn since he's a murderer, but they realize if Anna gets the Catholics on her side the FC will be in trouble.
Anna goes for a stroll with the priest with the funky ring. She asks about the art hanging in the Vatican. They agree it's magnificent. She stops at one disturbing image of hell. He explains the basic idea of a soul, immortal, meant for everlasting. He asks after her interest in the soul. She wonders if he believes the body can exist without the soul. He says without it, we'd just be animals. Chad overhears this exchange.
Tyler is obsessing over Father Jack and the peace ambassador murders and Lisa is trying to soothe him. He blames Jack. She tries to entice him to go do something. He misinterprets this as a call for payback and says he's going after Father Jack. Lisa tries to stop him.
Ryan works on the tracking solution for Jack to ingest. Erica checks in with Jack on his dangerous mission to meet Cohn and his kills in Iraq. He says talking about it won't undo it. He drinks the compound. Hobbes says it's time to lock and load.
Jack goes to meet Cohn as Erica, Ryan, Hobbes watch. A black SUV pulls up, they sweep him, put a hood over his head and put him in the car. The gang follows.
Meanwhile Tyler and some friends go and desecrate Jack's church with graffiti and destruction, Lisa is freaked out. The old priest enters ann tries to stop him and Tyler pushes him to the ground.
Marcus reports to Anna that the priest is a sleeper V, dispatched by Diana to study human emotion. Anna is curious he didn't identify himself. The cardinal informs Anna that the Vatican won't be condemning those clergy. He apologizes. She debates the meaning of faith and miracles and points out that the V have produced scientific miracles and it would be tragic for centuries of faith to turn from him to her. She says it isn't something she wants but wonders how many more miracles it would take to swipe his followers. One a day? Two? She performs a little blue energy magic in front of their eyes. They are.... stunned. She then asks him to re-evaluate his decision.
Chad does another report from the Vatican and announces that the cardinal will in fact condemn anti-V rhetoric among its clergy. Chad stops the cardinal and asks after the priest from before. The cardinal says he's to be the first missionary and is leaving with Anna.
Somewhere in upstate New York, Hobbes, Erica, and Ryan disable the guards looking after Cohn's compound where Jack has been taken. Jack meets Cohn and the trio busts in. Cohn grabs Jack and puts a gun to his head. He's outnumbered and outgunned, however. He realizes who Erica is and that she must be FC and that they're all on the same side. The gang points out that they don't kill people. Cohn explains he knows about the breeding plan and that his wife was also tampered with by the V's when she was pregnant and their son died. He says he's not a monster and lets Jack go.
Chad goes to the priest and, even though he's a V, he tells Chad he knows how he really feels about Anna and he should trust that and to keep up his good fight. Chad doesn't know he's V but senses that he's an unwilling passenger. The priest says it doesn't matter, his fate is already sealed. He presses his funky ring into Chad's hand and blesses him.
Back on the mothership Anna and Marcus give the priest the old V once-over. He's fighting the memory-retrieval process. She realizes he's been infected by human emotion. He says he was given orders to report only to his queen. She says she's his queen and demands that he tell her everything that he's learned about human emotion. He declines. She tells him Diana is in hell.
The gang and Cohn try to work out some kind of alliance but they can't abide the violence. He says it's the way to go. The gang realizes what they really should do is use him. Cohn likes this idea. He promises to give them the peace ambassador murderers later that night.
Anna brings the priest to Diana. Anna asks Diana to force him to tell them what he knows about the soul. He says the human soul isn't a curse but a unique gift they must not run from but embrace, and make part of them. Diana says all of these years she never lost hope. He says it was her soul that sustained her. He says if they protect the soul it will sustain their species in the future. Anna doesn't like this and says she'll use what he knows to eradicate the soul and he'll tell her everything as she skins him. He says he probably would. Diana kills him, giving him an "honorable" death. Anna is aghast. Diana agrees the soul is not a curse but a blessing. Anna informs her that Diana just killed her only ally.
Back at FC HQ and debate joining up with Cohn. Nobody likes it but they see the value in it. Father Jack warns this is the first bite of the apple.
He returns to his church and is confronted by the destruction. The old priest says he didn't call the cops so as not to draw any more attention to Jack, he blames him for the attack, his rhetoric making them a target. Jack hears a phone ringing and he picks it up, there's a picture text from Lisa to Tyler.
Erica hooks back up with Chris at FBI HQ. He's working on a surveillance warrant for the priest. She gives him a story about learning about a cabin in upstate and they go to check it out. as promised Cohn has given up the peace ambassador murderers. In the bathroom they find evidence that Serena was disintegrated in acid in the bathtub. Two birds, one stone, they got the peace ambassador murderers and explained Serena's disappearance.
Ryan brings Serena's head to Anna. He says he couldn't save her but he disposed of her remains and pointed the FBI in the right direction of the peace ambassador murderers. He asks her to "bliss" his daughter. She says not yet. He says they had a deal. She says she needs something more from him, she wants him to get close to Cohn and gain his trust. He wonders why she doesn't just take him out. She says she doesn't just want Cohn, she wants all of the FC and with Ryan's help she will destroy them all.
Erica goes to offer Jack a hand with Tyler's handiwork. They watch Chad's report on the Vatican's condemnation of anti-V rhetoric in the clergy. He says he won't stop speaking out. He hands Erica Tyler's phone on which he videotaped himself and his friends destroying the church. She apologizes and says this isn't the boy she raised. She says she feels like she's losing him. She says she needs help. He says he'll do anything he can and rubs her head and holds her hand.
Erica's boss goes to visit her new partner Chris and asks if he got the surveillance warrants on the priest. He says he has and has got all the traffic cams near his church. He also says he knows that he asked him if he saw Erica doing anything suspicious to report it. He says Erica told him she hadn't seen Jack in weeks but he found traffic cam footage of the two of them talking and her grabbing his arm and holding his hand. The FBI boss is intrigued and asks Chris he'll be okay with "this assignment" since he and Erica are friends. Chris says that's why they asked him right?
