Very dark, but sadly not very good

"Birdboy" is a Spanish Spanish-language short film from 2011, so this one had its 5th anniversary last year and this was written and directed by Pedro Rivero and Alberto Vázquez. They also received a solid deal of awards attention for their effort and it was successful enough for the duo to make a full feature sequel. But back to this one here. It runs for 12.5 minutes and it is animated of course. It takes place in a world of humanized animal character the way you know it in Winnie Pooh for example, but this is really the only parallel. This one we got here is really very dark and also on the depressing side at times, especially at the ending. There were moments when it was handled pretty well, but sadly I must personally say that the animation was in a way that I really did not like, even if thematically and atmospherically it fits the film nicely I guess. It's all subjective my dislike and I would not argue against people really liking it and saying this was a great film. It all comes down to personal taste. The story was tolerable, a bit too much on the absurd side occasionally maybe. The voice acting was decent. So overall, from my perspective I give this one a thumbs-down and I am a bit surprised how well it was received. I felt for example the transition away from the girl's family to the title character was relatively shoddy. Did it even come close to Oscar nomination? For real. My suggestion is to skip the watch here.
