But, what happened at the end? What were the bricks? Did they ever go back to find out what they were? I've looked everywhere for the answers. I've got to find out what they were. They don't even say it at the website of Aurora or National Geographic. My kingdom for a horse, I'm so intrigued as to what they were.

An interesting glimpse into ancient Roman life...

This episode of "Secrets of the Dead" is a very interesting one. Researchers are investigating a series of shipwrecks of ancient Roman-era vessels. While they weren't carrying treasure in a traditional sense, they are interesting because of their cargo--mostly foods and cooking equipment used by common and not so common people. Amphorae, mortar and garum are among the things they find.
If I was still teaching, I'd love to show at least part of this to my students in history class. Much of it is worth seeing, but I know that my old high school students would have loved to learn about garum--because it seems very disgusting. It's a sauce made out of fermenting raw fish and the Romans loved it--and the crew of the ship doing the dives decide to try making it themselves. It's pretty nasty looking--and that's EXACTLY the sort of thing kids find interesting. I doubt if I could have gotten the kids to actually try eating it, however! Well made and a nice glimpse into the lives of the ancients--particularly Augustus Caesar's unruly daughter.
