Nilüfer Yanya is back with “Like I Say (I runaway),” her first piece of new music since her lauded 2022 album Painless.
With a hypnotic, restless guitar line, “Like I Say (I runaway)” is signature Nilüfer Yanya — evocative, engaging, and effortlessly catchy. The ’90s-esque guitar line is met with a flood of distortion when the chorus kicks in, and it sounds like an epiphany. “The minute I’m not in control/ I’m tearing up inside,” Yanya sings in each refrain with conviction.
Co-written with close collaborator Wilma Archer, Yanya centers “Like I Say (I runaway)”around preciousness of time. “It’s about how you choose to spend your time,” Yanya writes in a statement, “Time is like a currency, every moment. You’re never going to get it back. It’s quite an overwhelming thing to realize.” The song is also paired with a music video directed by Yanya’s sister,...

“Bob Hope’S 10 Gallon Hats”
By Raymond Benson
Sometimes a little Bob Hope goes a long way. There’s no denying that Hope was one of the more popular comic stars of the 1940s and 50s. His star began to wane in the 60s, and then most of the Baby Boomer generation knew him as perhaps the greatest host that the Academy Awards ceremony ever had.
During Hope’s most active years, he made many solo pictures that were truly funny. He was also established as Bing Crosby’s partner in the massively successful “Road to…” movies, which arguably launched Hope’s career as a leading or co-leading man in 1940. When the scripts and direction were good, then Hope’s solo films were superb. That was not always the case.
The Paleface (1948) was co-written by Frank Tashlin (with Edmund Hartmann), who would also...

Stars: Bill Nighy, Olivia Cooke, Douglas Booth, Daniel Mays, Sam Reid, Maria Valverde, Henry Goodman, Eddie Marsan | Written by Jane Goldman | Directed by Juan Carlos Medina
If you know your mythical creatures, the title (and, indeed, the IMDb synopsis) of this period horror movie might give you unreasonable expectations for its content. However, instead of the monster from Jewish folklore, the Limehouse Golem here is essentially a nick-name for a (fictional) Jack the Ripper-like slasher terrorising the East End of Victorian London.
Directed by Juan Carlos Medina (his English language debut after 2012′s Painless) and adapted from a 1994 novel by Peter Ackroyd (Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem), The Limehouse Golem opens with former music hall star Elizabeth “Little Lizzie” Cree (Bates Motel’s Olivia Cooke) being arrested for the murder of her husband, failed journalist John Cree (Sam Reid). That brings her to the attention of Inspector Kildare (Bill...

Bill Nighy’s detective leads a fine cast in this deliciously atmospheric adaptation of Peter Ackroyd’s Victorian murder mystery
All the world’s a bloody stage in this gothic Victorian East End melodrama, splendidly adapted from a 1994 novel by Peter Ackroyd. A tale of theatrical murder drenched in the rich hues of classic-period Hammer, this gaslit treat sets Bill Nighy’s Scotland Yard detective on the trail of a grisly killer in 1880s London. Swinging between the ghoulish gaiety of the music hall and the grim stench of the morgue, the second feature from Insensibles/Painless director Juan Carlos Medina is a deliciously subversive affair, nimbly adapted by super-sharp screenwriter Jane Goldman and vivaciously played by an impressive ensemble cast.
“Let us begin, my friends, at the end,” drawls our host, drawing back the curtain on a city terrorised by a killer named after a beast from Jewish folklore.

While on a trip to Barcelona this past summer I had the opportunity to visit the set of Painless (Insensibles), the upcoming feature film from Juan Carlos Medina. A Spanish-French co-production with a timeline that spans decades the film is a thriller that begins in the days of the Spanish Civil War and continues through until the current day. At the dawn of the Spanish civil war, a group of children, insensitive to pain, is locked in a sanatorium in the heart of the Pyrenees. Current days, David Martel (Brendemühl), brilliant neurosurgeon, discovers that he has a tumour and start searching for his biological parents to get a bone marrow transplant necessary for his survival. During his quest, David will exhume terrifying secrets about...
