Inventor Tow Ubukata was also involved in the process of screenplay writing but, due to the director's guideline, cuts were inevitable - neither Ubukata nor director Susumu Kudô liked the result pretty much. The kind of bumpy and summarized way of telling the story is the result.
Besides that, Kudô made two different cut from the very beginning. The original Japanese Theatrical Version is closer to the original Ubukata's novel which doesn't contain THAT much sex and violence while his Director's Cut focusses much more on Rune's occupation as a prostitute and the abuse by her father in her childhood. Moreover, a few things have been added to the story itself.
