A unexpected gem
Jackbv12327 September 2019
I have always liked Rachel Nichols. She has the looks, but it's far more than that. In her debut on CM she knocks it out of the park. Seaver has natural instincts and I thought Hotch was a little tough on her.

As for the story, there were some excellent red herrings, but I saw something revealing just before any of the agents figured it out.

I agree though with a problem posed by another reviewer. Gun or no, the agent who was impressing the heck out of everyone at the Academy, including physical skills, acted more useless than Spencer when her skills were needed. (Actually, the supposedly clumsy Spencer has handled himself fairly well most times physical skills were needed.)

Back to being great
timecow-110 July 2012
This really is a great episode. It is one of those where everything comes together well, even if it doesn't keep you guessing until the end. After some weaker episodes in the season, this one reminds you why you can't stop watching this show.

That being said, I would give this one a 9, but I had to knock a point off for the absolutely terrible, awful, moment ruining song that comes in after the climactic moment. This has happened before in another episode. It's just inappropriate to have not only a song that is just plain awful, but to play it for SO long! I felt like I had bumped the remote and landed on music video. I suggest that when it starts, and you will know when it starts, hit mute until they show the "heading home on the plane" scene that ends most episodes. Your ears will think you.

What was Rossi thinking?
mjl52924 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This was an excellent episode that introduced Rachel Nichols as Ashley Seaver, she was the replacement for JJ. This case hits home for her and her very dark past, the song at the end was a perfect choice to feel Ashley's pain. The only problem I have is when Rossi's placing the little girl Heather in a police car totally alone, and leaves to go back into the house with Hotch?? For goodness sake the child just saw her father shot to death by Hotchner, and there isn't even a female police officer or paramedic in the car to comfort her? Rossi is a seasoned FBI agent and a supervisor for the team, what was he thinking?? My score is 8 out of 10.

Best Episode of the Season so far
JoeC3458 December 2010
The last few episodes I started getting a little bored with this show even though it's been one of my favorites for the last few years. However tonight my patience was rewarded, this episode was outstanding. I felt like they were going back to earlier seasons when they didn't reveal who the killer was in the first 10 minutes. Also they had a good little side story tonight and if you haven't seen the episode yet I won't ruin it for.

As far as the plot goes you'll have to see it for yourself, but I would highly recommend this episode and if you were like me and gave up on this season just watch this and you may be rethinking that.

Too emotionally involved
jmauritsk10 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I find this a really good episode because it shows really well the trauma of a daughter who's father is a serial killer.

In this episode there is a FBI trainee (Heather) introduced in the team .Heather allegedly is an asset because her father was a serial killer. She is suppose to help by recognizing body language from the community where a serial killer is active . She gets too emotionally involved and almost gets herself killed in the process because she went without backup. The serial killer (Andrew) is a IT specialist he has a young daughter and killed his own wife. When Heather shows up at hes door he invites her in because she shows so much interest in the family of the murderer. little did she know before she stepped inside....

Introducing Ashley Seaver
TheLittleSongbird18 December 2016
'Criminal Minds' is one of my favourite and most watched shows. Seasons 1-4 (and to a lesser extent 5, 4 is particularly strong) have the highest number of great, even classic episodes, and garnering the most re-watches.

Disappointments (and even they are still watchable) or stinkers were very few, with lesser episodes of that period being nowhere near low-point level of Season 6 onwards. This is with the exceptions of "Machismo", "The Fight" and "Hopeless", with a few other big disappointments being "The Performer", "Honor Among Thieves" and "Parasite".

Season 6 along with 9 and especially 11 has varied wildly in quality. It has some good ("Remembrance of Things Past", "Hanley Waters", "Safe Haven", "Into the Woods" and "The Longest Night" faring best), have yet to see a great one, episodes. It also a number of disappointing ones, such as "Today I Do", "25 to Life", "Corazon" and in particular "The Thirteenth Step" (a bottom 10 'Criminal Minds' episode, also remember "Big Sea" not being good but that needs a re-watch).

"What Happens at Home" is better than those, but my feelings on it mirror the comments, ranging from indifference to dislike, expressed on other sites reviewing it, rather than the praise it's got here. It is notable for introducing Ashley Seaver. JJ left big shoes to fill, and it must have been daunting replacing her. The good news is, Seaver is nowhere near as annoying as in succeeding episodes, she at least serves a point, she doesn't do or say anything anywhere near as dumb or face palm-worthy, she actually has an interesting and quite painful if not exactly unique back story and Rachel Nichols gives by far her best performance as the character, showing more engagement and less limitations.

Against all this, Seaver doesn't gel very well and vastly overshadows the rest of the team, is still rather bland, is too inexperienced (a "rookie" if you will), her actions at the end were unrealistic and stupid and her dialogue even for a debut is still poor. Really could have done without that sob story, that felt very misplaced, coming out of nowhere and really feels awkward in placement and writing. While it was laudable trying to make Seaver interesting and with a story, "What Happens at Home" does feel at times like it's trying too hard to like her or feel anything for her and goes overboard, as said that sob story should have been scrapped and there could have been less of the rubbing in of her qualifications and the whole stuff about her father and exposition.

It is a shame, because, while there could have been more of them, the rest of the team are still fun to watch and have such adorable chemistry. There are still enough little character moments to satisfy, especially Reid's mini-monologue, the Star Trek reference, Prentiss' deadpan and snarky manner towards the security guy and the moment between Rossi and Hotch (with a rare opportunity to see Hotch smile). The acting is still very good indeed, with nobody coming over as weak.

The story disappoints here. There are definitely moments, the concept was great and there was a little tension and suspense, the revelation of the unsub was a shock to me and the climax was occasionally scary, one also feels sorry for Heather. What stopped it from being any more was that sob story, the unsub's too calm and cocky attitude and that very sappy and lengthy ending song that just kills the mood. The story on the whole however was pretty forgettable and bland, with too much of it being predictable. Was also a shame that the profiling, psychology, delving into the unsub's mind and the victimology was barely there, as well as not enough of the team's detective skills and the unsub being pretty underdeveloped and not as interesting as ought.

Production values are still very high in quality, being stylishly photographed and atmospherically lit, and most of the music is haunting and effectively moody, the only misfire being the climactic song.

Overall, the introduction to Seaver was a mixed bag and the episode was just average. 5/10 Bethany Cox

A JJ wannabe
olcia-322177 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I like rewatching Criminal Minds, I have some favorite episodes as well. I'm not the biggest fan of JJ, however she wasn't a bad character. I simply cannot understand firing her and hiring a younger version of her (Seaver). She wasn't hired to be a new agent-she was basically meant to be a replacement whose only personality trait was that her father is a murderer (something she's mentioned in the episode multiple times). She didn't help the team, what's worse she has put herself into danger by going to a suspect's house to apologize (which had no point). I think my opinion would be different if she were hired as an addition to the original team instead of replacing a character that fit with the team.

Horrible episode
richkov32 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This review contains a spoiler. Unbelievable that regular viewers would like this episode. First, the writers introduce Seaver as an FBI prodigy complete with superior mental and physical skills and determination. Next, they explain how her first hand knowledge of serial killers can help solve the case. So what happens? She fails to identify the killer, then she fails to subdue him despite being 10 feet away when he draws his knife. I predict EVERY FBI agent watching her ineffectiveness must've thrown their remotes through their TVs and gone into their bathrooms to puke. If I were a network executive, I would burn all copies of the tapes and demand the ending be completely rewritten. Keep the good stuff about Seaver and have her act like a REAL wannabe FBI cadet, identify the killer and subdue him as Hotch and the others arrive. Gees! Do I have to tell them everything?

One of the idiotic plot I've see
lpp-phpme17 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Who the hell thinks it's logical to take a young cadet to a real life case just because her father was a criminal like just the one they are looking for at this episode.

Beyond a pretty face the new actor has no charisma less than a cucumber that left in the fridge for a week and a half and then you found out it's moldy and you don't want to touch it and then you decide to throw out the garbage.

They had the money to bring a new actress but they had to fire JJ actress? Someone there is out of his mind and need to think if he is a good match for this career. Got to say this episode broke my bing session.

that scorpion shot was haunting
mounabenjazia975 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously the scorpion shot was really terrifying this episode was a huge disappointement, i feel like i was let down by my fav show, but let's start with the things that i liked about this episode. the focus on the victimes famillies as a different approach is really intriguing, it quit resembels "the Mentalist" MO. i liked the conversation between Ashley and Emily about the "moralities" the wrong and right and the outlook of criminals justifying what they did away from their identity as fathers or husbands. now let's drag. what's up with that pet detail? shouldn't they have explained why the unsub wouldn't have a pet ! i mean i get that they did clearify that at the end but it should have been a productive detail in the profiling process.

what's with the cringey attempt to estabilish a potenial love interest for REID and Ashley, why would they play on that narrative if they wouldn't extend it later ? and finally that silver "Ashley" girl, hands down is one of the most stupid characters who ever existed in the history of tv, first, she was USELESS literally she added nothing to the profiling, it was a dumb move visiting the unsub house to "apologize" or whatever because u know it's all about her and her father.. smh

ps: that five Finger Death Punch song was soo out of the place, a very poor choice. Sorry

Hochner Scowls Again
knroc13 September 2019
Yet another episode that shows the casting director's sole criterion for this role is not acting, but a face with a constant scowl.
