Good movie, until the ending.
mystery25010 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
It was a decent movie until the ending. When he goes back in the past to retry the whole relationship, that just disgusted me.

Why erase everything she went through herself in her own life? He should have just went into the present past where he just left to see what the situation was first, instead of abusing the information he knew about her from the previous past.

As for the filming in Savannah, where I'm located, they didn't show too much. A few seconds of River Street and I believe one of the restaurants might have been down there.

It was decent for what it was, but the ending was far too quick and meaningless.

Rom Com + Time Travel.
ReyLagarto20 May 2012
I like Rom Coms and I LOVE Time Travel movies.

That said I've never found a good way to have them together (I don't think the romance factor in some Doctor Who stories can be counted as such).

This movie is not as good as the other reviews say. It's an OK movie. Entertaining enough.

But what I can say is that I liked it MUCH more that Kate & Leopold (the other movie I know of with that combo).

It's also true what other reviewer says, I don't love the ending.

But all in all, it's a good and not too long (75 minutes is a good amount for it).

Should've been longer... and costlier
Sexy-scientist22 August 2015
Hey, can't TV movies be of 2 hrs? It seemed like the writer had a crude idea, which if well written, can make the viewers connect with the characters, which was not the case in this film. The story seem to be rushed. Characters were not well developed at a point and the story is taken forth. Screenwriters should expand the characters by adding some more scenes. Also, if you are making a futuristic sci-fi romantic comedy, you need to spend some money, you just have to. Here, the special effects were minimal, and whichever were present were mediocre. It doesn't look like this is a production of 2012, but of 1990. Acting from all the actors was average. There was nothing much to do. I felt a great need of more emotional moments. Everything felt stale. Direction felt weak. All in all, a skipable movie.

A near-perfect TV romcom
HallmarkMovieBuff11 April 2011
It's hard to find anything wrong with this movie. It's a fun fantasy...joyful, endearing, and *short* (clocking into a two-hour time slot at one hour and fifty minutes, *including* commercials).

Sara Rue is delightful, as usual, and looking great, as usual. (I thought she looked great even before her weight loss.) Her presence has never failed to brighten any production in which I've seen her.

Barry Watson plays "future boyfriend" Pax ("peace" in Latin) to perfection, with just the right amount of out-of-time awe. (In his time, the 32nd century, Earth has "evolved" into a "perfect" world without anger or strife, but also without passion or love.)

Set in New Orleans, the locale enables Pax to experience its renowned jazz music, giving rise to unknown feelings and leaving him less robotic in behavior.

Fred Willard, too, whose roles too often demand an over-the-top performance, comes in with just the right level of comedic inflection.

I even laughed at the wee bit of slapstick herein, a form which usually passes by me unappreciated.

All in all, watching this is a mood-lifter and time well-spent.

Sweet romantic comedy...
paul_haakonsen2 June 2012
"My Future Boyfriend" is a romantic comedy in the true sense of the genre. And it is a movie that heavily appeals to a female audience.

The story is about Pax (played by Barry Watson)who is an archaeologist in the future where he unearths money from 2012 along with novel written by Elizabeth Barrett (played by Sara Rue). Reading the novel, Pax comes upon the word 'love' which is not used in the future (oddly enough), and decides to travel back in time to meet the author and learn the truth about love.

I must say that, despite being a man, then I found the movie to be good, it had a nice story, and the storyline was really helped along so nicely by Sara Rue and Barry Watson's acting and the chemistry there was between them on the screen.

"My Future Boyfriend" was nicely shot and there was a lot of nice scenes in the movie, along with the marvelous beauty of New Orleans serving as the setting. (Although the movie was filmed in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia.)

Of course, the movie is rather predictable, and the ending, well you saw that coming a mile away. But still, the movie worked out well enough. Good romantic entertainment with the occasional laugh here and there. So if you like sugar-coated romantic comedies, then you should check out "My Future Boyfriend" because it might just be what you were looking for.

Perhaps you will even find yourself leaking (as to use one of the terms from the movie).

Better than expected
gee-1521 April 2011
I didn't have very high hopes for this movie as I sat down to watch it. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself viewing a very appealing film. An anthropologist (Watson) from 1000 years in the future comes back to 2011 to investigate the idea of "love" after finding a well-preserved romance novel written by Sara Rue's character. He is perplexed and intrigued to find himself attracted to Rue who thinks he's completely nuts.

Sara Rue is, as always, a pleasure to watch and Barry Watson had a commitment to his character that really came through. I have to think it takes some skill to be both weird and charming. The two actors had nice chemistry and the screenplay, while not exactly innovative, did display some intelligence. The only criticism I have is that Valerie Harper is WOEFULLY underutilized. She looked great though and definitely held her own with her younger co-stars. All in all, a good viewing experience.

My Future Boyfriend

ABC have long since been trying to emulate the Hallmark tv movie formula, and unfortunately films like this show they still have a long way to go.

A better than average cast and a writing pair with pedigree combine to make a dud that never really works.

I like Barry Watson, I think he's great in '7th Heaven', but he's let down here by a character that seems a bit like Robin Williams character in 'Bicentennial Man'.

A real dud.

464th Review: For TV this is excellent and worth your time
intelearts14 November 2011
This is a very appealing and nicely judged movie with a likable story, likable characters, and likable actors. It has something of that innocence that Mork and Mindy had (without too much of the zany) and all in all it is deeply romantic and charming. It reminded this reviewer of a one-off production from the BBC from Mike Leigh in 1980 called The Flipside of Dominick Hide, that even now gets 8.2 on IMDb. That too is not high production film, but rather simple and romantic, combined with strong story-telling. This won't be to everyone's taste as it emphasizes innocence but for this reviewer it has some of that elusive magic that no about of production or money can bottle.

An anthropologist from the 32nd century travels backs a thousand years to seek out the author of a romantic novel that he discovers. As love is a word unknown to his society he is intrigued. He arrives in New Orleans and the fun begins. What follows is a nice tale of discovery and romance. Of course, we get the fun of a future traveller perplexed by our world etc;

All in all this goes to show that conviction, a good plot, and good acting doesn't need a huge budget or masses of effect: a simple tale, simply told, and it is both heart-warming and charming.

Cute and Lighthearted
Vogon-Poet25 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I was in the mood for a lighthearted romantic comedy and this movie did not fail. It is cute and fun to watch. I've always loved Sara Rue. She is such a natural actress and I find that she chooses her roles well. Barry Watson's character is charming and entertaining. I actually kept the movie on my Netflix queue because I feel certain I will watch it again. It can feel slightly cheesy at times but it's not excessive or overdone to the point where I feel it ruins the movie. This would make a great movie for a "girls night", just as long as you aren't expecting anything deep or a true romance movie. Worth the watch. 7 out of 10 stars.

Good Made-for-TV Movie
dgcrow10 April 2011
I really liked this movie. I thought Sara Rue was just fine, as usual. (I've been a fan of hers ever since "Less Than Perfect".) Barry Watson was appealing and his scenes with Rue were quite entertaining and believable. The whole production was enjoyable, light entertainment. And I had no problem with the little twist at the end. I have always enjoyed stories involving time travel if done reasonably well, and this one certainly was. In addition, it did have a few good things to say about love, relationships, and what is really important in life. Great to see Valerie Harper again, and there were a few brief but nice location shots in Savannah, Georgia. I'd give it an 8 out of 10.

Perfect Movie for Romance Scifi Lovers!
Rohail12 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Well,It's my proud to write a Review of this perfect Movie that i just watched, Even it's my Second review here on IMDb, I was not expecting to enjoy that much when i sat to watch this movie on my weekend night, but this movie is just more than perfect! An Excellent mixture of Romance, Sci-fi, Drama, Comedy, Romance. The whole story is properly balanced, full of suspense & UN-expected morals, Specially the end of the movie is totally opposite to your guess or imagination! The only thing disappoint me is that when i was finding this movie here on IMDb i was expecting thousands of votes & reviews but they are very few, I guess not so many peoples knew about this movie when it was released there must be mismanagement in it's publicity, other wise it was a super hit master piece! Will highly recommend this movie to Romance, Drama, Comedy, Sci-fi lovers!

Cheesy
valentinucenic30 March 2014
Yes, I know, it's cheesy, but sometimes we need that. Another love story and with future involved, maybe it seems too much. But they make it to be sold on. It's funny and cute. And sometimes we are in the mood for that, especially when the actors are not bad taste as you expect it. Michael Lange wrote it well, the lines are good and involving the future is not bad as you may think at the beginning. He keep it simple and most of the times simple is good, right? I know reason vs. love is a packed topic, but you don't think of that during the movie, you just go with the flow. Sara Rue and Barry Watson are good, the others maybe they lack more lines, but I have to remember Valerie Harper also. She is that woman archetype who's good just by being. In movie and in life.

A Great Movie
This_Is_War00010 April 2011
Usually movies on ABC Family are a bit too dramatic for me and I usually avoid them at all costs but I really enjoyed this movie. I'm a sucker for time-traveling movies. Not only is it a time-traveling/sci-fi movie it also has just the right amount of romance in it. Not too much and not enough, a perfect balance! As a teenage tom-boy I'm not usually much for "romantic movies" but this one just won me over completely. I don't really want to say anymore because it's such a great TV movie and I'm afraid I might say too much (it happens all the time). Anywho, if you're in the mood for a good, funny yet romantic movie I'd recommend this one most defiantly.

Such a cute movie!
tiapet710 April 2012
This movie surprised for a couple of reasons. The first being that when I saw the previews I thought it was a new TV show not a movie, so after sitting and watching it about half-way through I was afraid it was a failed TV series and was a little sad for it. This was just too cute to be anything but a hit. The acting and story line were so good that they drew me into the story instead of having me criticize every aspect of the film. There was the perfect amount of romance, I was beginning to wish I was Sarah Rue's character and that hasn't happened to me in a long time! Barry Watson's portrayal of PAX was exactly as someone from another time would be. I almost felt like I was reading a book instead of watching a movie because books tend to be more into the details.

Time enough for love.
Bernie444417 July 2011
This made for "abc" family movie is better than most Hallmark productions. It is actually form Crawfish Productions, LLC which should give you a clue to its content.

An anthropologist Pax (Barry Watson) discovers money and a book on forbidden love in and old ship. He is intrigued to find out about this forbidden subject. So with the help of his mentor and friend Bob (Fred Willard) he goes back in time to inquire the meaning of love and other mysteries form the book's author Elizabeth Barrett (Sara Rue.)

Will he find the answers? Will Elizabeth find a few answers of her own? Will we find a few answers in the process?

Actually a very pleasant TV movie, not too long at 75 minutes.
TxMike4 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps it is telling of our network TV business that this made-for-TV movie is 75 minutes long and likely made to show over a 2-hour time slot. That leaves 45 minutes for commercials!

It has an interesting premise, far into the future when the Pacific Ocean is now dry land (I don't really believe it could happen that fast, anyway...) some explorers cut a hole into the hull of a long-sunken ship, and in a sealed compartment on the floor find a paperback novel "Forbidden Love" and a stash of money, a stack of USA $100 bills. The book was published in 2011, and a bit worn, and the bills were a 2012 printing. Those facts will eventually be very important.

Sara Rue is Elizabeth Barrett, the author of that book, and who also works for a magazine in New Orleans as a feature writer in 2011. (A word of disappointment, none of the scenes in New Orleans looked like New Orleans. The river was not the Missisippi. The streetcars were not on St Charles Avenue. That is because the movie was NOT filmed in New Orleans! It was filmed in Georgia.) Barry Watson (who looks amazingly like a slightly younger Tim Olyphant) is an explorer, PAX, in the year 3127, when he finds the book and pages through it he sees words he doesn't recognize, words like 'love' and 'sex'. The older scientist, old reliable Fred Willard as Bob tells him those are banished words, they are a type of virus that can cause trouble. So PAX decides the only way to find out is time-travel to 2011 and meet the author, and ask her those questions.

The story is clever on a number of levels. The "Forbidden Romance" of the book's title becomes the forbidden romance of Elizabeth and PAX, because she is engaged. Of course for the wrong reason, a year earlier he had kept her hat, actually her mother's old hat, from blowing into the river, so she figured 'fate' had brought them together.

When PAX shows up looking for Elizabeth, and claiming he is from 3127, everyone thinks he is deranged so she is asked to write a series on him. First off, how did he possess an obviously well-worn copy of the book when it was just being released that day, as Elizabeth was giving brand-new copies to her co-workers? Then, when he pays for things how is it he has 2012 money, signed by the Secretary of Treasury that was about to be first announced the next day?

Make no mistake this is just a lightweight rom-com, but I saw it on Netflix streaming movies and it is an entertaining 75 minutes. Although I remain disappointed that it wasn't filmed in New Orleans.

SPOILERS: After several misadventures, and Elizabeth now being unsure she really loves her fiancée', PAX and Bob end up back in 3127. But PAX has a bright idea, he will go back to the day and time in 2010 that the wind blew Elizabeth's hat off, and retrieve it right before the other guy gets to it, that way he will become her love interest. That is where the movie ends, as she is asking him to go to the restaurant for a cup of coffee and talk.

My future actor
salesmanager2 July 2012
I think audiences who love a light comedy, romance and sci-fi chemistry movie will definitely blow out this one ( blast from the past genre)... what amazed me is the actor "Barry Watson" he showed a different side of him which will truly uplifting to his acting career ( at par with the likes of Tom Hanks, Brendan Frasier, Adam Sandler...) Definitely an actor to watch in the future... how he acted out the role opens up a new appeal for his career.. producers out there just might consider Watson for other romantic comedy roles, actors of such classification is rare in the market ... I specially love the part where Watson dance.. its really mind blowing.. i mean he is so funny... Specially how he talks in the movie really captures me... how polite ,well mannered and informative as well .....

But the one minor setback is.. Future people cannot recognize a CAR on sight? i mean really a little boy would have easily recognize one....they could have said "this is a primitive means of transportation which was used on land but since we travel from planet to planet .. it was taken out of the market...catchy lines instead...

Watch it and be amused as i did... touchiing story too.... the light drama captures my emotions in a light perky way...
