A History of Horror: Home Counties Horror (2010)
This second episode takes a look at how the horror genre pretty much died down after WW2 and how things didn't pick back up until Hammer and their release of THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and HORROR OF Dracula. This here leads to the likes of Roger Corman and Vincent Price. Film like NIGHT OF THE DEMON and THE HAUNTING are also looked at. This here leads to Amicus as well as stuff like DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS, FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE and ASYLUM.
As with the first episode, the highlight here are the interviews, which include Roger Corman, John Carpenter, Barbara Steele, Jimmy Sangster and Barbara Shelley. As I said about the first episode, Gatiss isn't interested in telling the complete history of the genre but instead this is almost like a personal documentary of his own view of horror and how he was introduced to it. The film clips are all nice and Gatiss makes for a good host but there's no question that the greatness comes from the interviews and especially getting to hear Carpenter discuss the Hammer films and hear from Steele as she discusses BLACK Sunday and of course her Price/Poe/Corman picture. You've also got Roy Ward Baker and one of his final interviews.
