Sex & Nudity

  • Moderate sex references, including an implied reference to a threesome and a man being left in a bedroom with a woman.
  • The couple are only seen to kiss on screen but they are later given a round of applause and the man jokes 'you're right, it was more fun with another person'.

Violence & Gore

  • Frankie and his band mates are arrested for not paying for a hotel room.
  • Some discussion of mob activity.
  • Frankie is hit in the back of the head twice while being interrogated by police
  • A car wreck occurs during a police chase.
  • A car chase ends with a car crashing into a building which sets off a burglar alarm. The driver and passengers are unharmed and they flee on foot.
  • There are infrequent scenes of violence which are mostly mild in tone as a chair is broken in anger and men push and shove at each other during arguments.
  • In one scene, a man appears to be shot in the head, with the impact hidden from view and a small amount of blood visible on his temple. However, this is immediately shown to have been faked in order to extort money.

Profanity

  • Some Italian insults.
  • 28 uses of "fuck" and its derivatives.
  • Moderate and mild language includes use of 'shit', 'bullshit', 'son of a bitch', 'prick', 'asshole', damn, screw', dumbass, hell, numbnuts, Christsakes, goddamn, Jesus, ass, pissing, crapping out, and balls.
  • There is occasional use of discriminatory language, none of which are endorsed. There are references to 'monkey songs' and 'coloured bands' as well as comments that a man is a 'fruit', depicting the prejudices of the era.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Sporadic period smoking and drinking.
  • In an interview at an awards ceremony nick mentions enjoying a cigar.
  • A nun is shown drinking wine in a church
  • A man is seen smoking what appears to be marijuana and we learn that a character has died from an overdose of pills. There is a clear aversive, anti-drug message.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • During a tense argument with Gyp and his band mates Nick raises his voice very loudly and the rest of the group appears to be very frightened by his anger. It happens very suddenly and may trigger viewers who are sensitive to yelling and loud noises.
  • Although it is based on the Broadway musical, the film has a mature and somewhat dark tone.
