- In trying to help George convict a gangster, Jim's secret identity is compromised. Meanwhile, JJ adopts a secret Internet identity to encourage his new tutor - Katie.
- Jim's secret identity is at risk when he tries to take down a dangerous mobster who has eluded George for years; Stephanie continues to look into Dr. Volson's previous research of a mysterious plant - against Dr. King's wishes; Daphne convinces a reluctant JJ to use his powers to help her become more knowledgeable in order to impress a boy; and JJ employs an Internet guise to bolster Katie's self-worth, with an unforeseen and potentially costly result.—ABC Publicity
- Jim (Michael Chiklis) and Stephanie (Julie Benz) prepare for George's (Romany Malco) surprise birthday party. They only have two hours to set up the room (not a problem for Stephanie), hang decorations on the ceiling (not a problem for Jim), and make sure George doesn't know a thing about it. (not going to be a problem, since he already knew) But George will play along right after his court case in an attempt to take down Silvan Luka, a well-connected mobster. Well-connected enough to beat the rap on racketeering and extortion charges. But George is not deterred, even going so far as telling Luka he's coming after his boss, Mr. Kadare. Luka is not worried, but George promises "to be up in your business so much, I'll show up on your next MRI." But at least George is not the only one not looking forward to his party. Daphne doesn't want to find out he really isn't surprised, despite the fact George knows she's there and can read his mind. She is nice enough, however, to play along for George so Stephanie doesn't find out. Although Daphne (Kay Panabaker) would rather date the guy in her class with a girlfriend so horrible, she makes the girls on Gossip Girl (2007) look like saints. But it turns out she just had to be patient and wait for the artificial chick to dump him because he likes art museums and a little studying of her father's art books, and she has a date.
George brought Amanda, his co-counsel in the Luka case with him. Although she would have come to the party anyway, given she would really like to go out with George. It takes Stephanie to point this out to him, but George is not sure. Stephanie is also shopping for a tutor for JJ (Jimmy Bennett), who is having trouble with his honors-level graduate school online courses. Stephanie decides to ask Katie (because a 15-year old being tutored by a hot 25-year-old is NEVER awkward), but Katie (Autumn Reeser) does agree. Actually, she was going to suggest it. She is thrilled about tutoring a burgeoning Lex Luthor or Reed Richards. ("OK, work may not be the only reason I'm single.")
Stephanie was right about Amanda, and she tells George she would be interested in seeing him outside of the office. He drives her home, she gets out of the car, and someone shoots her. George is devastated and tells Jim at the hospital he thinks Silvan Luka is coming after him because of the threat he made in court. George was a young attorney who messed up an assault charge case against Luka five years earlier, resulting in the conviction being thrown out. He holds himself responsible for everything Luka has done since then. Jim tells him now they can do something about it, but George vetoes that in a heartbeat; he doesn't want Jim or his family involved.
Stephanie is called into Dr. King's (Stephen Collins) office, who tells her he doesn't want her looking into Dr. Volson's work any more, even though there may be parallels to what she was working on. King tries to cover by saying Volson's work was controversial...'fringe science', as it were...and he went off the deep end after King killed...sorry, fired...him. Stephanie agrees, and Dr. King calls his friend, The Watcher (Josh Stewart), to find the other person he swears is on the loose with special abilities. Stephanie, of course, had no intention of dropping it, and Katie tracked down Volson's widow in Mexico, which was just twenty minutes away...for Stephanie to run to, that is. She packed up her briefcase and some carb drinks.
Jim chooses to ignore George's advice and tracks down Luka, who was shaking down a lackey and was about to kill him. Jim calls the police and creates a distraction to give the lackey a chance to run...if you can call throwing a van a distraction. Luka investigates the thrown van, only to run into a masked Jim, who easily stops the bullets from Luka's gun. He throws Luka into the wall, but Luka manages to get Jim's mask off when they're distracted by the oncoming cops. Jim has to leap away to avoid the police, and Luka sees all of it. As does The Watcher. Jim expected George to be super-mad the next day, but George actually loved it, despite the unexplainable crushed bullets all over the crime scene. George is ecstatic to get another shot at Luka, and Jim conveniently leaving out the 'Luka saw him' aspect didn't hurt, either. But Luka is more than happy to tell George about the man he saw while George barters for taking out Luka's boss. Luka thinks there is a supercop out there on the city's payroll, which is technically correct, and Jim's picture is technically public domain since he's a cop. So Luka's counteroffer is his silence about Jim for his freedom.
Daphne can't believe how boring Modernist art is, so she blackmails JJ into learning it for her. She can hear his thoughts as he studies it, but she decides it'd be easier to pull a Cyrano and have JJ follow from a distance and see the paintings Daphne is at with her date. JJ is quite annoyed being used like this, but Daphne has no issue with it, given the guy made out with her later on. Of course, JJ wouldn't have much of a problem making out with Katie, who determined JJ can retain what he learns for approximately six hours. But Katie makes the mistake of confiding in him she can't get a date, and Daphne basically says he can't invent the perfect guy for Katie. Challenge accepted, and he makes an online profile for Katie she can't resist.
While George reads Jim the riot act about putting his family at risk, Stephanie makes it to Mexico to talk to Mrs. Volson. Apparently, Mrs. Volson was expecting Stephanie, since word of Stephanie's research didn't stay within the walls of GlobalTech. Dr. Volson was let go from the company, but not before he slipped out two vials for his wife and him to try. Mrs. Volson was able to get out of her wheelchair and walk...and so much more. But the effects were only temporary. Dr. Volson was dead soon after. Stephanie believes the powers drove Volson to suicide, which she tells Jim about when he wants to convince George not to accept Luka's blackmail attempt. But Stephanie is afraid their new powers might eventually kill them.
Daphne is on top of the world until she sees Brett, her artistic boyfriend, back with the artifical chick. He apologizes to her the next day, and she tries to blow it off as just a day at the museum, even though Brett was thinking he may have made a mistake by going back to his old girlfriend. Katie is in heaven IMing with her profile match. So much so, Stephanie catches her IMing and insists Katie invite Will P. Gerome to dinner. Just a tiny bit awkward for JJ, and it gets even more awkward when Stephanie starts talking for the nervous Katie on the IM. Yes, Stephanie just asked her son out on a date. Very Greg and Carol Brady, isn't it? But JJ is too chicken to chicken out. Daphne can't believe he did it. ("How can a super-genius be so epically stupid?") He has no choice but to blow off the date, which won't make Katie happy.
George figures out Luka can't actually prove the city has a 'supercop' unless he can get Jim to show his powers, so George offers him the original deal, which his attorney takes for him. However, someone kills Luka on his way to the county lockup. Was it Kadare? Nope, The Watcher gave Luka the Darth Vader treatment. Jim finds out and puts two and two together regarding Luka and Detective Cho: the people who have seen him in action. Both were dead.
This, however, was nothing compared to the bear trap Stephanie just walked in. Mrs. Volson lied a blue streak to her, at Dr. King's request. Mrs. Volson was never in a wheelchair, or at least the powers she had weren't simply temporary. Stephanie thanks Dr. King for warning her away from Volson, but obviously Dr. King is concerned Stephanie knows too much. The Watcher sees their entire meeting and is given a picture of Stephanie's family. He figures all of it out, but he keeps that from Dr. King. He does have a way to keep an eye on the family. After all, Katie was still looking for the blind date JJ set up for her. The Watcher decided she should keep it.
