A little lacking but not bad
TheLittleSongbird15 August 2012
When I saw the Tom and Jerry marathon on Boomerang last week, I had no idea that there was a Tom and Jerry/Sherlock Holmes movie. And I knew I had to see it, as a great fan of Tom and Jerry and Sherlock Holmes. I was not expecting it to be as good as the original Tom and Jerry cartoons or any of the Sherlock Holmes adaptations with Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett, either way it would have been a tall order. And it wasn't. It was too short, the ending felt rushed and I didn't care for the rather deflated character design of Miss Red. However it was a decent movie in my view.

As far as Tom and Jerry movies go it is not as good as their takes on Wizard of Oz or the Nutcracker or Blast off to Mars, but I'd put it on par with Shiver Me Whiskers and Magic Ring and leagues above Fast and the Furry and Tom and Jerry: The Movie. The animation apart from Miss Red is bright and colourful and the character designs are good. The music brings the right amount of snap and energy, while the script is witty and quite intelligent. I loved the story on the whole, it skips along nicely and never felt padded. Not only that, the mystery was a fun and interesting one and on the whole reasonably true to Conan Doyle's writing, and Tom and Jerry's comic and violent shenanigans while not classic status are still very funny. Spike and especially Droopy bring some inspired laughs also. I do agree though that Moriaty, who is still quite fun, is a much cleverer villain than his final plan lets on. Holmes and Watson are not as prominent as Tom and Jerry here, but it was a joy to see them, Holmes is still shrewd and intelligent and Watson while somewhat bumbling is also thoughtful. I did love the Bruce Nigel bit, a reference to Nigel Bruce, the actor who played Watson to Rathbone's Holmes. Tom and Jerry are just great, Jerry is both cruel yet sweet and Tom takes the violence and laughs well, his facial expressions even without saying a word are priceless. Spike and Droopy are also fun especially in the chase of Tom, Jerry and Miss Red and their attempts to catch the villains before the other does. The voice acting I can't fault either, Michael York, John Rhys Davies and Malcolm McDowell are all wonderful.

In conclusion, could have been better with a longer length especially but still a fun decent film that is an interesting watch for anybody into Tom and Jerry, Sherlock Holmes or both. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes (2010)
SnakesOnAnAfricanPlain30 December 2011
On a bit of a Sherlock high at the moment, so thought this would be a nice change of pace from all the Rathbone action. Surprisingly, this is both a fine Tom and Jerry cartoon and a decent Sherlock Holmes movie. They don't exactly gel seamlessly together. The film has a bit of mystery and then pauses while Tom and Jerry get up to their usual shenanigans before continuing. This means that the mystery is very simple, with a number of jewel heists and a blackmail scheme becoming connected. The voice cast are superb with York and Rhys-Davies channelling Rathbone and Bruce to a T. McDowell also makes for a good Moriarty. Luckily, neither Tom nor Jerry speaks here. Jerry is Holmes' assistant and is his usual cruel self. Tom and Jerry work well together when they have to, but will one up the other if there's a chance. Slapstick is the main comedic ingredient here, and there is no attempt at making it anything special. The animation is very colourful and it really allowed me to just be absorbed by all around it. I particularly liked how they blended Holmes' London with cartoons without ever addressing the fact. Horny wolves, talking dog policemen, and flying cats all live together in this world. Towards the end it did feel a bit rushed, with Holmes just suddenly thinking of the answer because the plot called for it. Moriarty's final plan was a bit silly for such a genius, which is the only real time it betrayed either one of its sources. A good film that should keep most people entertained.

A pleasant surprise!
AhmedDaReviewer17 September 2021
Me being a very big fan of the original T&J cartoons (as everybody here I assume) I don't really expect a lot from these modern straight-to-DVD T&J movies, Don't get me wrong, They're not bad at all, They're just not as good as the 1940~1952 era or even the Chuck Jones era for that matter, So I do not go outta my way to seek the DVs and watch then and even when I do, I just go in with low expectations but this one interested me for some reason..

Like.. A crossover between T&J and Sherlock Holmes.. That's such a weird and dumb idea, I think it might actually work and could give us a lot goofy interactions and wacky scenarios!

So.. what do I think of the movie.. Yeah It's okay, Again It's not bad at all, It's just alright, I was kinda of disappointed because of the lack of T&J/S&H interactions.. because... when you watch a movie called 'Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes' You would expect a lot more of.. You know... T&J and Sherlock and Watson interacting, Like seriously not ten minutes into the movie and iconic duos split up, and I found that kinda of disappointing

I know I'm seriously complaining about the 2010 straight-to-DVD Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes movie but like.. come on, Give me my T&J/S&W fanfic already goddammit!

Moriarty is basically trying to create the infinity gauntlet and Sherlock and Watson tries to stop him and Tom and Jerry with Red (surprisingly from the classic Tex Avery cartoons) trying to investigate a suspicious gang of flying cats, and that's basically the most interesting thing about this movie, Not the flying cats, I mean Red, Yeah Red and the wolf and a lot of other classic Tex Avery characters (that I won't spoil) are in this movie and that was such a pleasure surprise, It really felt like such a cool and sweet homage to Tex Avery and his amazing career, and that was just so nice to see and ending of the movie was just the cherry on top, Plus one star just for that, and Red's song 'Bumbershoot' is a very nice song, Grey DeLisle is such a talented singer and voice actress, Even though the song is unfortunately not as catchy and memorable as the old ones.

The voice acting is pretty great too, Michael York and Malcolm McDowell did an amazing job with the unfortunately boring and forgettable lines they got, I felt like their voices were kinda of wasted on this because they make such a great Sherlock and Watson, The other voice actors were good too.

So yeah if any of what I said interested you then hey, Go ahead and watch it, I had fun watching, with such a short running time, You won't even have a chance to get bored by it.

This movie is better than Blast Off to Mars and Shiver Me Wiskers but not as good and bonkers as The Fast and the Furry.

Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes
Prismark1018 February 2021
This is a mish mash of genres and other vintage cartoons styles such as Tex Avery.

In London, a crook is stealing valuable jewels. Spike and Tyke are assigned to guard the valuable Star of Punjab and even that is stolen from under their noses.

Miss Red, the beautiful singer who has the crowd howling is being framed for the crimes.

Sherlock Holmes is on the case and Moriarty is the main suspect.

Tom and Jerry decide to assist Miss Red.

PC Droopy is also on the case of the jewel thief.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are second fiddle here.

This is after all a Tom and Jerry cartoon and they get involved in lots of close shaves and shenanigans.

This is a breezy cartoon, there are several homages to cartoons of yesteryear, probably lost on the younger viewers.

Have you seen the IMDb parental guide???

Warning: Spoilers
I'm surprised it's rated yellow almost across the board. I'm sure if the cartoon music hall singer and her kissing scene with Jerry rates as a mild for sex, surely the pub scene scores the same for alcohol and smoking??? With an understandable orange for violence (surprised it wasn't a red on the scale they must be using), makes this the raunchiest thing I've watched in a long time! Of course it's not......

It took me back to Saturday, early evenings as a child. The BBC would run a few 5 minute cartoons, followed by The Pink Panther show and then Doctor Who, or Whorzal Gummage before bed time at eight. Something like that....

I enjoyed this cartoon. A few guest appearances from other classic cartoon pairings. The artwork does not have exactly the same look as the old short cartoons, the feel is a bit more Scooby Doo rather than old school Tom and Jerry. Having said that a 45 minute version of classic T&J would probably be a bit much. The story line was entertaining if not original - T&J meets Sherlock Holmes seems to be the originality quota used up for this presentation. Lots of flattened gags used, too many. I experienced those old feelings I used to get of feeling sorry for poor Tom as he got flattened yet again. Educational too, I'd never heard the word bumbershoot before - always needed another word for umbrella. It's a bit confusing as to which year it was set in, I'll let the reference to Queen Victory slip, must have been an old song .... Butch tells Spike that there had not been an attempt to steal the Crown Jewels since they had moved to the Tower of London in 1902 (Queen Victoria died Jan 1901), but ladies wearing dresses with bustles - Victorian, the particular bustle I spotted would have been 1885 ish. If they hadn't thrown in the 1902 fact I wouldn't have suddenly got fixated with the point in time the story was set. Morale - don't mention an actual date in your cartoon if you don't want to be fact checked. Overall, enjoyable.

Not the same funny tommy & jerry as u see in cartoons!
munnavenkatesh-kurnool24 November 2010
This movie is not as funny as you see tommy & jerry in cartoons. The characterization of tom & jerry is not great. You can't hardly see the funny scenes between tommy & jerry. The movie goes straightly in to the story. What the thing spoiled is story which is very pale & old and doesn't suit anyway to tom & jerry or any cartoons, screenplay was very weak. You can predict what is going to happen throughout the movie. The sherlock character is just waste and totally misfired.Droopy character was much better shaped when compared to other characters and brings out few laughs. There is nothing great to say about this video flick. The video length is 50minutes only so take a look at it in your free time if you love tom & jerry seriously.Otherwise better to leave it.

Not bad
dan_ritchie3 June 2013
I haven't seen a cartoon this cartoony in a toons age. It all starts out when Mr. Sherlock Holmes asks Jerry Mouse to fetch his morning paper. Things just naturally escalate into, you guessed it, a Tom and Jerry cartoon. The funny thing is, it makes me laugh. The spirit of the cat and mouse movies of yore is perfectly intact. The first thing that strikes me is how animated it is. There's even some appearances of some Tex Avery characters, and I won't say which ones. Oh, yeah, and Sherlock Holmes does some stuff too. All in all, it's a fun feature, if a little short. I was never much of a Tom and Jerry fan, but I do appreciate the attention to making it a lot like the old cartoons using the new technology.

Not too bad of a Sherlock Holmes crossover but...
LadyDerpyCritic1 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Okay so Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes. Second Spike Brandt film. I enjoyed it more than the last movie he made with Joseph Barbera. The plot is pretty self explanatory; A mysterious jewel thief and his gang steal the treasures around the Scotland Yard. Red is framed for the crime and it is up to Tom and Jerry to solve the case. Your typical mystery to be fair but again, enjoyable to watch.

No need to talk about the quality because it is the same as the first film. At this point, I won't mention quality too much unless I see errors.

The writing, not too bad. The setting in the beginning started off good and then it got a lot better throughout the film. The acting with it makes you sit in your seat more, pretty much reading a mystery novel of Sherlock Holmes only it has comedy.

Unfortunately... I only have a few characters I enjoyed in the film. Red, gotta admit, sexy character and I love her singing. Jerry is pretty much likable throughout the movie. His wits and his crime solving pretty much put the pieces of the puzzle within the movie together rather than being a mess of just constant cat and mouse chase. The villain, Professor Moriarty was wicked like, I love his design and his invention that would allow him to shoot voltage beams at his foes and his master plans- I won't spoil but pretty much let you decide on it.

Soundtrack- eh, I think one or two background instrumentals were okay and Red's song is catchy but the second time- not much.

Furthermore, this movie is a solid 50 like I think it is okay. You like Sherlock Holmes and Tom and Jerry, then this is the movie for you.

Bambashoo!
Raja7922 March 2022
This movie's pacing is really good, and I loved that "Bambashoo" song with the umbrella in the middle, which was an actually good song.

The best part however is the climax, which is just way too good, especially with the awesome background music.
