When the jockey Bill Sutton is found dead in an alley with an apology message in a napkin and a ring, Lisbon, Patrick, and the CBI agents are assigned to the case. Soon they learn that Bill was a violent man and had tried to reconcile with his former girlfriend, the waitress Delinda LeCure. Then, Lisbon and Patrick visit the track where Bill worked, and they meet the owner Cob Howell and the jockey apprentice Sam Starks. Soon the find that the place gathers gamblers, con-artists, and Patrick plots a plan to catch the killer.

"The Red Ponies" is not among my favorite episodes of "The Mentalist". Fans of horse racing may like if more than I did. My vote is seven.

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** As usual, this episode is just full of Patrick Jane's mental and sleight-of-hand tricks. I'm not even gonna TRY to figure out the odds on tricking the racetrack shill on the Trifecta bet. As a matter of fact though, I think he actually won real big on the race in question (the big one). I mean he bet a serious load of dough on the horse in question. When he was at the window, he bet 10 large on Castor's Folly. Later, when he was in the office, he never bothered to mention that bet. This brings up a continuing point about Patrick. His Finances.

He always LOOKS like he's on the cheap, but if one looks a little deeper, you have to know he's pretty well fixed. His whole approach to life is as the genius he is. There are several instances where he helps people out financially; it doesn't seem to hurt him. And, he has no problem relieving the bad guys of their ill gotten gains. Just think about the fact that he'd NEVER given up his Malibu home, even in the end. They blew up the workshop, but the house was still there.

Anyway, it's a real pleasure to watch Patrick and Teresa (the lovely Robin Tunney), work through the various suspects to finally catch the killer. Also, the interplay between the other team members is fun to watch, and beautiful Grace, (Amanda Righetti) has a good time trying to get out to the track with Patrick and Teresa. Great acting, dialogue and a fast story make it a fun show.
