Well done with one exception.

My only complaint in this show was that they used Obama in it to give his opinion. I didn't like him in office and see no value of him or his opinion now. The only thing worse would be the mistake that is in there now.

Would've been a 10, except..

What a remarkable documentary about Abraham Lincoln. It's very honest and doesn't sugar coat his legacy nor tear it down. Practically perfect except for the presence of Obama. He provided no help whatsoever and only seemed to be there to be a part of it for his own self-interest. He's not a historian and it shows.

The rest? Magnificent. Especially Lincoln's early years which helps explains his emotional issues and crippling depression. What a remarkable man who held onto his personal integrity even when faced with probably some of the darkest days of our history. Worth owning and an excellent resource.

A must watch a compelling story

As a Yankophile I was so glad to at last see a worghy detailed analysis of Abraham Lincoln's entire life and achievements. I had felt a little let down by the previous Hollywood movie as it focussed on such a narrow part of his life, albeit it was a well made movie. This however takes us from boy through manhood through to his untimely death and is honest in discussing every aspect of his character, his strengths and weaknesses all which made him so human. The entire cast are quality actors and are convincing aided by experts who comment on events throughout. This is what quality television is all about and is unmissable for all lovers of US history. Lincoln is one of my heroes and in my opinion is not just the greatest US President but one of the greatest human beings to have ever lived!

History strikes gold with Abraham Lincoln!

Warning: Spoilers
As usual the History Channel creates a magnificent portrayal of our most beloved President.

The first of the three part mini series we see a young Abraham growing up in the frontier land of Indiana. His mother dies while he is young and his father leaves Abraham and his sister temporarily to find a new wife. It was heartwarming to see his new step mother be good to him and they form a strong loving bond. His father doesn't approve of his love of books and reading while his step mother encourages him to read and become educated. He starts off as a riverboat builder and operator, carrying cargo up and down rivers to New Orleans. He then yearns to become more and eventually becomes a successful attorney and then wades himself into politics. It was interesting to see he had very low points in his life, after all he was human just like us. But he overcome them and went to even further heights to become the face of the newly formed Republican Party. He marries Mary Todd and shortly afterwards becomes the President of the United States.

In part two of the mini series we see Abraham deal with the immense pressure of war in trying to keep the union together at whatever costs. I never knew the intimacy of his family and the loss of his son Willie had devastated both Abraham and Mary. He had to endure so much death with so many people he loved and admired. Abraham Lincoln was indeed intuitive and very smart when it came to battle plans. His patience with McClellan was head scratching at times, but he always had a reason for it. And the battle of Gettysburg was intense. But what surprised me was his fearlessness and courage. He would visit the union camps regardless of the danger to visit and talk with the soldiers. His heart was compassionate and true.

Part three continues with the tide turning for the union at the battle of Gettysburg. Lincoln appoints Grant head of the union army. He also writes the Emancipation Proclamation, introduces the 13th amendment and easily wins re-election to his surprise. Ending with his assassination, it was truly sad to see him only live out 5 days after the war was over after being shot by Booth. He had done and sacrificed so much for the country he loved and saved.

Graham Sibley who plays Abraham Lincoln is outstanding! He plays Abraham perfectly with compassion and strength. An absolutely magnificent performance!

Everyone should watch this documentary, it was brilliant!

5+ hours long, but the more I saw, the more I wanted to see

When I saw (the massive, Progressive disappointment, Neo-liberal) Obama, I didn't think I would like this show as much as I did.

I know this put a positive spin on Abe, but it seemed to be fair about the difficult situation our country was in. And the tragic mistakes he made by completely forgiving the horrible racists & their war crimes. They should have, at the very least, made it mandatory to teach about prejudism, empathy and critical thinking in schools. Had his assassination been thwarted, perhaps the myth of Abe, would have. A century+ of structured violence, red lining, Jim Crow laws, segregation, police brutality, etc, could have been significantly reduced for 40+ million Black Americans.

I wonder how much worse it could have been, then & now, had Abe not existed and made the massive difference that he did make.

Amazing

I saw this the last 2 days. What an incredible film, this is absolutely For Ages eight through high school and for adults as well It is a look at his life and the 13th Amendment And the Civil War on the end of the Civil War. This is one incredible film. It's not a feature film per se. More like a documentary at feature film length.

I would recommend that you don't show it to children under the age of say eight or nine just because of the intensive history involved here I have to say the filmmakers at me actors in this movie we're nebulous and incredible The one thing I got out of this film was how stressed Abraham Lincoln was towards the end of his first term. His eyes were sunken in he ha pale complexion. The man had more stress upon his shoulders than any human should ever have.

Talking Heads Are an Annoying Distraction

To be fair, I could not get through even the first episode. I tried and it might have been watchable and much shorter (to the good) except for continual interruption of people giving their opinions every few seconds. Some dialogue snatches last no more that a few words and provide no value that a voice over could not achieve and are often opinion rather than fact like telling us what Lincoln was thinking.

This method of documentary making seems to be the the norm with The History Channel.

I think it would be much more beneficial to just watch a Abraham Lincoln film or read the wiki articles on his life story.
