Hidetaka Miyazaki is almost always referred to as the Soulslike creator. Still, it may remain unknown to many of his fans that his original dream wasn’t always to create the God-killing genre. In 2018, FromSoftware’s Déraciné was released, a first-person VR game that dealt with a fairy trying to solve mysteries while studying in a boarding school.
Those who know Miyazaki now for all his Soulslike titles would have a hard time comprehending that a title like Déraciné was an attempt by him to fulfill a career based on his initial desire. This was revealed by him during an interview when Déraciné was released.

Rolling Stone UK’s latest cover features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 33, who is set to have a busy final few months in 2024. In addition to playing the lead in Sony’s superhero film Kraven the Hunter (opening in theaters on August 30), he will be joining Bill Skarsgård in the horror movie Nosferatu, helmed by Robert Eggers (releasing on December 25).
Oh, did we mention he also has a supporting role in David Leitch’s flick The Fall Guy, which will arrive on May 3? Recently, the actor has been in the news for his fervent promotion of the upcoming Sony project, Kraven the Hunter. However, it appears that his efforts are falling flat with fans, as he employs the same trope that audiences have grown tired of.

Brazil’s giant media conglom Globo and Spain’s Atresmedia International, the overseas arm of top commercial broadcaster Atresmedia, have renewed their strategic pact for another five years, in which Atresmedia delivers Globo telenovelas, series and mini-series across Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic market.
“Since we launched the agreement five years ago, we have witnessed how well the audience of Atreseries and Atresplayer welcomed Globo’s content, which every month occupies very significant positions in the audience rankings and perfectly complements our original offer,” said Mar Martínez-Raposo, director of Atresmedia International.
Key Brazilian productions comprising some 500 hours a year via Atresmedia include “A Life to Die For,” “Doomed,” “The Hunter,” “Time After Time” and “Ambitious Women,” many of which premiere exclusively on Atreseries and Atresplayer.

Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar has joined the cast of Shane Black’s next film, Play Dirty. She’ll appear alongside Mark Wahlberg and Lakeith Stansfield.
After years in development, Shane Black’s thriller Play Dirty appears to be gathering pace. It was only the other day that Lakeith Stansfield was announced as a co-star alongside Mark Wahlberg; it’s now reported that he’ll be joined by Rosa Salazar, whose previous roles include the zesty anime adaptation, Alita: Battle Angel.
Deadline, the outlet that broke the story, doesn’t disclose what role Salazar will be playing in Black’s thriller, which is based on the long-running – and influential – series of novels written by Donald E Westlake.
It’s previously been reported that Play Dirty will draw on several of those novels rather than one in particular, though judging by Deadline’s synopsis, it’ll take at least a...

Mort Engelberg, who was a producer on films including Smokey and the Bandit and The Big Easy before transitioning into politics as an “advance man” for Bill Clinton and other presidential candidates, died Saturday in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 86.
“He was a wonderful person, a wonderful husband. He loved the movie business, and he loved his work with President Clinton,” his wife, Helaine Blatt, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He told the best stories of anyone I ever met, the best jokes.”
Born and raised in Memphis, Engelberg graduated from the University of Illinois and then spent a year working on a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri. He left school before completing that degree and worked as a journalist for a few years before moving to Washington in 1961 to work for Sargent Shriver, the director of the then-newly formed Peace Corps, and later...

Mort Engelberg, a producer of the films Smokey And The Bandit and The Big Easy, has passed away. Engelberg was 86, and he died in Los Angeles in the company of his wife, Helaine Blatt, a success herself as a high-end jewelry broker.
Engelberg was producing films when he took time away from his day job and organized a famous bus tour taken by Arkansas governor and presidential aspirant Bill Clinton and his running mate Al Gore through numerous states the summer after the Democratic Convention in 1992. Engelberg served a similar role previously for candidates Walter F. Mondale in 1984 and Michael Dukakis in 1988. For Clinton, the bus tour was a rousing success. It bonded Clinton, Gore and their wives, and presenting the amiable presidential candidate as an everymen who thrived mixing with real people in cities across the country. It would become a trademark for Clinton’s successful two presidential runs.

It was announced today that Pat E. Johnson, who choreographed the fight scenes for the first four Karate Kid movies, has died at the age of 84.
Pat E. Johnson was a ninth-degree black belt in American Tang Soo Do and also served as vice president of the National Tang Soo Do Congress, which was created by Chuck Norris in 1973. He learned the Korean martial art while serving as a chaplain with the U.S. Army in Korea. A new animated feature adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost is on the way. Deadline reports today that Shout! Studios and Blue Fox have teamed up to bring The Canterville Ghost to theaters this Halloween.
While no release date has been set just yet, Deadline reports that Shout! Studios and Blue Fox “sets the film for a strategic rollout across multiple platforms, beginning with a theatrical launch timed for Halloween.” That might make this another great gateway horror entry for the whole family this spooky season.
The animated reimagining of Wilde’s short story tells “of a modern American family that moves to their recently purchased country home, Canterville Chase in England, only to find it is haunted by a ghost. Effectively, Sir Simon de Canterville (Stephen Fry) has been haunting the grounds of Canterville Chase successfully for over 300 years, but he meets his match when he tries...

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

"The Night of the Hunter" may hold back from showing any murders onscreen, but that doesn't make Reverend Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) any less creepy. A fanatical Christian that's equally misogynist, Powell roams the Great Depression Ohio valley, marrying widows before robbing them of both of their largesse and lives. The not-at-all-good reverend sees no conflict between his faith and his black widowing. After all, the Bible is full of killings.
While Powell is said to have a high body count, only two of his killings are directly featured in "The Night of the Hunter." The film opens with him fleeing from one, catching a glimpse of his victim's lifeless legs from her basement door. Powell then marries Willa Harper (Shelley Winters) to find money stolen and hidden away by her late husband. After brainwashing her into his faith, he disposes of her. She ends up being so robbed of...

With Italian drama TV enjoying its own golden moment, new free- and pay-tv deals have been struck for two popular series from pubcaster Rai. “Rocco Schiavone,” which has already been bought by Starz in the U.S., and “The Hunter,” which was in competition at Canneseries, have sold in a raft of territories.
Based on the bestselling novels by Antonio Manzini, “Rocco Schiavone” follows the irascible deputy police chief of the title after he is posted to a remote Alpine region. Season 2 of the show launched recently on Rai 2.
Fox has snagged the pay-tv rights to the series in Germany, and pubcaster Ard has picked up the free-tv rights. AMC has the show for its networks in Latin America and Orf for free-tv in Austria. Deals in a total of 75 territories were sealed by Beta Film, which is handling distribution for both “Rocco Schiavone” and “The Hunter.”

Earlier this week we learned from the screenwriter of Sony Pictures’ Kraven The Hunter, Richard Wenk, that he was including Spider-Man in his script, and that the hero would come face-to-face with Kraven. I have no idea if this is actually going to happen, but it certainly got fans excited.
Wenk also revealed in an interview with Discussing Film that Sony Pictures is looking at possibly hiring Antoine Fuqua to direct the film. Wenk and Fuqua worked together on The Equalizer.
When asked if Sony was interested in courting Fuqua to direct the project, Wenk said:
"That’s an unequivocal yes. Antoine is not just a great filmmaker and one of the top filmmakers in the business, but he’s also a friend of mine and we work very well together. So, I’ve got his ear and he’ll decide based on the script. But yes, I think I...

Cannes — Canneseries suggested we are “living in a golden age of global television,” said Harlan Coben, emphasizing the world “global.” Here, extrapolating from its series , are 8 trends in global drama:
1.Women Power
Women are sticking it to men. Sometimes quite literally, as in “Killing Eve,” where Jodie Comer’s Villanelle, a brilliant, if nonchalant, female assassin, finds an original use for a hair-pin and an Italian mobster’s left eye. “Bullets,” from Finland’s Vertigo, which won the sneak-peek MipDrama Buyers Summit Coup de Coeur, forefronts two strong women – an undercover cop, an ex-terrorist – in a series which is both high-octane political thriller and a female friendship drama. “Angelica,” one of the most liked projects at In Development, is set at the last abortion clinic in a conservative U.S. state which becomes a flashpoint for broader divisive social confrontation. Of the 12 drama series projects presented at In Development, there...

“The volume, quality and global reach of drama [now] is unequalled in the history of television,” Lorenzo Di Maio, an agent at Endeavor Content, said Tuesday at a panel on TV drama financing at Canneseries, a festival in Cannes dedicated to drama series. Di Maio’s company is handling international sales on Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Killing Eve,” which plays in the festival’s competition.
The growing quality of high-end series is drawing in top actors and that was pushing up budgets, the panelists said. Eleonara Andreatta, director at Italy’s Rai Fiction, which has “Il Cacciatore” (The Hunter) in the festival’s competition, used the example of “Medici: Masters of Florence.” The producers hired “The X-Files” alumnus Frank Spotnitz as showrunner, and his influence helped raise expectations for the project, pushing the team to compete with other globally distributed series. “The first person we cast was Dustin Hoffman and that set the level for the project.

Malcolm Kennard and Mark Coles Smith in Pawno.
Actors turned filmmakers Paul Ireland and Damian Hill met doing a play with storied character actor John Brumpton (Romper Stomper, The Hunter).
In Pawno, the pair's first feature as director and screenwriter respectively, Brumpton plays the owner of a Footscray pawn shop and Hill his employee.
Hill started writing the script during the course of the play's run, and afterwards sent it to Ireland, who agreed to direct it.
"Over a three year period we kept developing the script, cutting it down, making it tight, and raising the finance to make it independently", said Ireland.
The film was financed entirely by private donations, a process which "took a long time, but we got the right people in the end", Hill told If.
The screenwriter-star describes the gradual evolution of the script as a process of winnowing.
"We went back and forth with the characters for ages.
