What the hell is everyone complaining about?
marvelmonkey-6512823 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
FULL DISCLAIMER: I'm disabled, I have been my entire life. I have cerebral palsy, am in a wheelchair, and can't walk at all. That said, I honestly found this episode funny. REALLY funny. I suppose I can see why others were offended, and I know there were a lot of complaints, but the episode Blind Justice had only four complaints, and both the BBC and UK Gold refuse to repeat it. This episode, however, is still repeated on both channels, and I think that's a good thing. I don't see this as taking the mickey out of disabled people because of the ending. If anything, I see it as a "moral tale" about what could happen if you pretend to have a disability. An Aesop, I think it's called.

At the end of the episode, an award ceremony is held to celebrate the achievements of disabled people, and Ben ends up being exposed because a man who actually IS disabled bursts in and interrupts, announcing that he is also named Ben Harper and that the money and award is rightfully his. He then chases Ben around the room, with Ben running, and deliberately crashes into Ben, knocking him to the floor.

Ben's wheelchair is immediately taken away, along with all his adaptations being withdrawn, and he is told that he only avoids prison time because he initially did attempt to return the money. It appears that Ben and Susan still have the blue badge, but as they attempt to leave the house, they are caught and forced to give the badge back, sending them back to square one. Karma.

Again, I am disabled, but I genuinely enjoyed this episode, and the fact that their small victory was immediately shot down, to me, would have redeemed any bad feelings, but honestly, I saw it as just having a laugh, and I think it's good fun. Also, I'm sixteen.

Tasteless, not even funny.

The Council sends Ben a disabled payment, rather than come clean he cashes the cheque.

The lowest point in the show's history, incredibly tasteless, and so out of character for the show, I'm truly not someone that's offended, but this is offensive, they have the wonderful Penelope Wilton, and she is totally wasted.

The one saving grace, and the reason I award a few stars is for the Janey/Kenzo storyline, it's very sweet and lovely, and does make up for some of it.

70% dismal. 3/10.

Disgraceful and really not funny
Kali100820 October 2011
I usually don't mind this show but this episode really got my back up. There is nothing funny about using services meant for people with disabilities and some less informed able bodied people might actually believe that all the services that Ben gets in this episode actually exist for all people with disabilities, are all free and come as quickly as he got them.

I can tell you that this is not the case. Although I am in Australia I have checked this out with people in Britain, and the real story is totally different.

I am very disappointed with the BBC and Rude Boy Productions for making this episode, and I am not being oversensitive - I can have a laugh.

I don't have a problem with Little Britain, for example - and the guy who pretends to need to be in a wheelchair because that is so absurd you just know it isn't true - especially as he climbs ladders and all sorts of things like that. It should be noted however, that there are people who have good and bad days with their condition and may need a wheelchair some days and not others, or can walk a bit but still need a wheelchair or mobility scooter. I know people in this situation who able bodied people have threatened to report!! To whom I am not sure?!

I also laughed hard at the IT Crowd episode when one of the characters gets caught in the disability toilet and then pretends someone stole his wheelchair, because he is so embarrassed. That showed how shameful it is to use facilities needed by others, and some really funny consequences of it. This My Family episode does not!

A poor taste, and just generally poor episode
studioAT11 February 2017
In an attempt to stay fresh in its later years 'My Family' tried many things. One was to make Michael gay, the other was to move into black comedy territory. The result of that is this very un PC episode that I rarely watch, because it's so poor.

It's an episode centring on one poor taste joke that runs and runs throughout. It's not part of the 'My Family' we knew and loved, and alienated families watching.

Robert Lindsay and Zoe Wannamaker seem game to throw themselves into this new genre covered by the show, but it doesn't work, and is one of the many episodes I skip when going through the shows run on DVD.
