Deadline reports that Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle has been tapped to write and direct the live-action adaptation of Gundam, which is being co-developed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks.
Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise, Gundam has been described as a space opera depicting a battle waged between massive mechs and armies of space colonies fighting for independence from Earth. The Gundam franchise has grown into a juggernaut over the decades, with dozens of TV shows, video games, manga, and much more.
Now, you may recall that this isn’t the first time Hollywood has attempted to get a live-action Gundam movie off the ground. It was announced in 2021 that Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) was working on a Gundam movie for Netflix and he seemed quite pumped about the project. Some concept art was even released showcasing one of the giant mechs, but Deadline’s report states that...

It looks like Hollywood and movie theaters are going to have a lot to be thankful for very soon. That's because the Thanksgiving frame is shaping up to be an absolute juggernaut, with not one, not two, but three different films looking to sell a lot of tickets as we head into the holiday season, with Universal's musical "Wicked" and Paramount's long-awaited sequel "Gladiator II" leading the way. While the films couldn't be more different on paper, early box office tracking suggests they have something in common. Namely, general audiences are very interested in both of them.
"Wicked" is currently tracking for an opening weekend of $80 million or more domestically, while "Gladiator II" is eyeing an opening in the $65 million range, per early tracking numbers provided by Deadline. It's very early to start getting hyperbolic, but we could be looking at another Barbenheimer situation here. Last year, Greta Gerwig...

Big screen Westerns might've been falling out of favor at the U.S. box office in 1965 (thus paving the way for Spaghetti Westerns to become a surprise sensation when Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy rode into movie theaters throughout the course of 1967), but television Westerns were still swaggering their way to strong ratings thanks to "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke," and the hybrid Western/spy/sci-fi series "The Wild Wild West." And with "Rawhide" finally drawing to a close that year (thereby allowing its star Clint Eastwood to become a modern Western star), there was suddenly room for a new, sudsy, ranch-bound saga about scheming landowners and warring heirs.
"The Big Valley" whooped it up for a solid four-season run, running out of steam in 1969 at around the same moment the television Westerns began going the way of classical big screen oaters. Until then, viewers were hooked on the doings at the Barkley Ranch,...

There is little doubt that Ryan Reynolds is one of the biggest stars that Hollywood has on offer. The Marvel’s Deadpool and Wrexham AFC owner has starred in a plethora of hit projects such as Free Guy and Detective Pikachu, but is currently facing a bit of a stutter, with the release of Paramount Pictures’ If, which has till date made just over $104 million, against a budget of $110 million.
The John Krasinski offering has thus far failed to make an impact and boasts of a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While there may be plenty of reasons why the movie has failed to even break even thus far, one fan recently claimed on Twitter that it might have something to do with the ‘movie fatigue’ that is currently afflicting theatre audiences. Lionsgate’s genre-spanning 2024 slate of heist comedies, weepy coming-of-age tales, cheeky video game adaptations and horror stories was aiming to fill a void. Most of these were the kinds of movies that major Hollywood studios have either stopped making entirely or largely relegated to streaming services.
And yet, instead of packing seats at multiplexes due to pent-up demand, everything from director Eli Roth’s irreverent console-to-screen adventure “Borderlands” ($32 million globally), the “Crow” reboot ($23.7 million) and historical crime drama “1992” ($2.9 million) to Halle Berry’s post-apocalyptic horror story “Never Let Go” ($16.2 million), Dave Bautista-led action-comedy “The Killer’s Game” ($5.9 million), Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis” ($11.2 million) and “Wonder” prequel “White Bird” ($6.8 million) has sputtered at the box office. That’s a string of seven consecutive flops — each with paltry single-digit debuts — in the nine weeks between early August and mid-October.

Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan continues to write new chapters in his feel-good comeback story, and this latest one is as an action star in Jonathan Eusebio’s Love Hurts.
After a nearly two-decade hiatus from acting, Quan won an Oscar for his supporting role as Waymond Wang in Daniels’ best picture-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once. It was a storybook second chance for an actor who grew disillusioned with acting, opting to quit and enroll in USC’s film program. It wasn’t until watching 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians that he felt the urge to test the waters for any new opportunities.
In Love Hurts, Quan’s character, Marvin Gable, is one of Milwaukee’s best real estate agents, and he, too, has also been enjoying his own second bite of the apple until his much darker past as a hitman comes back to haunt him. In the lead-up...

Given his history in the realm of stuntwork, David Leitch hasn’t dropped the ball when it comes to action sequences in his movies, whether it be 2022’s Bullet Train or last year’s The Fall Guy. Unlike some of Leitch’s other works like John Wick, Bullet Train is more bombastic with its action, and Aaron Taylor Johnson even opted to perform some of his own stunts in the action flick.

Peggy and Ryan Reynolds as Dogpool and Deadpool
The biggest in news for canine film stars after the Palm Dog, the Fidos announced their longlist today at a special ceremony presided over by Deadpool & Wolverine star Peggy. Famous for playing Dogpool alongside Ryan Reynolds, she was joined by her human, Luke Middleton, and judge Anna Smith of Girls On Film, at London’s Nft South Bank, where the names of this year's stars were announced.
Unsurprisingly, Palm Dog winner Kodi made the list for her work in Dog On Trial. Other notables include Dave from Andrea Arnold's Bird and Kelpie from The Fall Guy. This year there are also animated entrants, making room for the canine characters seen in The Garfield Movie, Inside Out 2, Venom: The Last Dance and Robot Dreams.

In the future, everyone will get their own “John Wick”-esque action comedy. The next person to get one is Ke Huy Quan, and the movie is “Love Hurts,” in which Quan plays a former hitman who comes out of retirement for one last mission. On Tuesday, Universal released a trailer for the film, which opens in theaters early next year. It features Quan’s impressive stunt work scored by the ironically easy-listening tones of Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.”
In his first lead role since winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his career-restoring performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a mild-mannered real estate agent with a secret past as an assassin that he’s trying to put behind him. Over the years, Emily Blunt has earned herself enough recognition and praise through her outstanding performances across various genres. As Ryan Gosling likes to put it, she brings that “Blunt force” to her pieces, ensuring to leave an impression on her viewers. Perhaps this was the very reason why she earned her breakthrough within 3 years of her onscreen debut in the film industry.

Eva Mendes says she may consider acting again if the right role came along — as long as it involved working alongside her husband Ryan Gosling. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the actress known for titles like The Place Beyond The Pines and Hitch opened up about the challenges she faced early in her career and what might bring her back to film roles.
While Mendes says she was “never in love with acting,” facing barriers like typecasting and ethnic bias made her determined to prove herself. “They would say ‘she’s too ethnic for this, too ethnic for that,'” Mendes recalled of casting calls in her early career. This “fueled” her to work harder. Although times changed and “being Latina became cool,” the obstacles stayed with Mendes.
The Cuban-American star stepped away from films nearly a decade ago to focus on raising her two daughters with Gosling.

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which will be announced on December 17, 2024. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Visual Effects.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 97th Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.

Saoirse Ronan said she was “sad” when Ryan Gosling was dropped from the movie The Lovely Bones.
The actress ended up starring alongside Mark Wahlberg in the Peter Jackson-helmed 2009 film, which followed Ronan’s character, a young girl who was murdered and watches over her family and her killer from purgatory, as her loved ones struggle to heal. Wahlberg played her grieving father after Gosling was fired.
The Lady Bird star recently told host Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that while she didn’t get to film with Gosling at the time, they had “done some prep” prior to production starting. “I think I just loved Ryan. And his dog, George, and I was just sad that, you know, he wasn’t going to be around,” she said.
However, Ronan thought the reasons why the Barbie star and the director parted ways were “totally valid.” She added,...

The top two streaming titles from the first week of September held their spots in the second week — and both improved on their debut showings.
Netflix’s limited series The Perfect Couple and its movie Rebel Ridge ranked first and second overall on Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week of Sept. 9-15, just as they did over the prior seven days. The Perfect Couple drew 1.97 billion minutes of viewing time (up a bit from 1.91 bilion), and Rebel Ridge grew to 1.28 billion minutes from 1.11 billion for its premiere week.
Also showing significant growth: Hulu’s unscripted show The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, which improved by 78 percent week to week and broke into the overall top 10 with 729 million minutes of viewing. Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (747 million minutes) fell off some after two weeks over 1 billion minutes. Emily in Paris (708 million) moved back...

The longest time frame between James Bond movie releases was six years, with the mark being hit twice: first between Timothy Dalton’s final outing, 1989’s License to Kill, and Pierce Brosnan’s debut, 1995’s GoldenEye; the most recent came between 2015’s Spectre and 2021’s No Time to Die. It has now been three years since that Daniel Craig farewell hit the screen…but will it be another three? According to one key figure at Amazon (who acquired MGM in 2022), patience is still key.
Speaking with The Guardian, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said, “The global audience will be patient. We don’t want too much time between films, but we are not concerned at this point.” That comment seems to sit somewhere in the middle. Are the studios not concerned because they have a specific vision for the future? Or because they feel like they’re on track for...

The BBC has picked up Nicole Kidman’s The Last Anniversary, the latest adaptation from Big Little Lies scribe Liane Moriarty.
Deadline revealed casting for The Last Anniversary for Australia’s Binge last year and the series will star Teresa Palmer (The Clearing, A Discovery of Witches, The Fall Guy), Miranda Richardson (Good Omens, Spider) and Danielle Macdonald (The Tourist, Patti Cake$).
Having previously bought Moriarty adaptation Apples Never Fall, the BBC has snapped The Last Anniversary up for iPlayer in a deal with distributor Fifth Season.
Moriarty’s book is set on Scribbly Gum Island, a place of many secrets. The one that made it famous – the disappearance of a young couple decades ago – might have made the island a destination for true crime tourists, but when it comes to secrets, the three generations of women that call Scribbly Gum home, hold far more.

Michael Bay is in talks to direct Will Smith in the Netflix action film Fast and Loose, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Fast and Loose focuses on a crime boss who loses his memory after an attack and gradually learns that he was leading a double life as a CIA agent. Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, Chris Bremner and Eric Pearson worked on the screenplay. Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the original script after selling their pitch to Netflix.
The movie has been in the works since before Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. THR previously reported that David Leitch had exited the project the week before the fated Academy Awards telecast to start work on The Fall Guy, the Ryan Gosling-Emily Blunt action-comedy feature that Universal released in May.
Producers for Fast and Loose include Leitch and Kelly McCormick for 87North, along with Smith.

When a number of factors in a situation go wrong with enough precision to maximise damage, we tend to call it a perfect storm. Pay attention and you’ll hear it all the time; a few days ago, the lack of social housing in England was blamed on a perfect storm, similarly America is currently bracing itself for a perfect storm of election chaos, and outer space recently enjoyed a perfect storm of solar activity. The term, of course, is based on a 2000 film where George Clooney sailed a boat in a hurricane.
However, I would like to propose a change. From now on, instead of calling something a perfect storm, I recommend calling it a Daddio.

To understand "The Bionic Woman" heroine Jaime Sommers, you first have to get on board with "The Six Million Dollar Man." The young tennis star turned partially cyborg superhero was first introduced on "The Six Million Dollar Man" in the show's second season as a female counterpart to the series' male bionic hero. Jaime, the show told viewers, was severely injured in a skydiving accident, but cutting-edge technology allowed her to not only live through it, but also gain new skills. She had extra-strength hearing, superstrength, and the ability to run at top speeds, all of which came in handy for her new life as a schoolteacher-slash-spy.
A high-concept storyline like this one may not thrive on TV today (unless it was made by DC or Marvel), but in the '70s, audiences ate it up. Jaime's eventual death in "The Six Million Dollar Man" was so poorly received that...

"Bones" — the procedural drama centered around forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and her FBI counterpart Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) ran from 2005 to 2017, spanning nearly 250 episodes and 12 full seasons. But will it ever come back for a revival?
It seems like everything is getting a reboot or revival now. Earlier this year, they reinvented "Mean Girls" as a musical starring Reneé Rapp, and shortly after that came out, Jake Gyllenhaal headlined a remake movie of the '80s classic "Road House" for a new generation. In Ryan Gosling's (delightful) action comedy "The Fall Guy," Lee Majors and Heather Thomas, who played the lead roles in the original series, show up in cameo appearances at the very end of the film. Throughout the past few years, everything from "Cobra Kai" to "Fuller House" to the long-awaited fourth season of "Veronica Mars" has reunited original cast members for another go-around. So why not "Bones?...

All joking aside, this show is phenomenal without resorting to crazy gimmicks or overwrought dialogue and plotting. The strength of the series lies in its level of talent.
High Potential doesn’t just boast the fantastic talent of Kaitlin Olson, but a creator who wrote and had a hand in some of history’s biggest shows and movies.

Drew Goddard, creator of High Potential, also wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost. If that doesn’t impress you, he also wrote The Martian and World War Z. Still not enough? He directed Cabin in the Woods!

Back in 2004, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow hit theaters in September 2004, but the science-fiction movie with lots of action and adventure didn't become the box office hit people were expecting. Rather, the star-studded "dieselpunk" movie became a box office flop with mostly positive reviews, earning it the title of a cult classic through the years.
In celebration of the movie's 20th anniversary, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow began streaming on Netflix in October 2024. The film comes from writer-director Kerry Conran and stars Gwyneth Paltrow as reporter Polly Perkins as she teams up with Sky Captain, played by Jude Law, to investigate the truth behind scientists disappearing and giant robot attacks.

A stunt choreographer tries to recapture his 80s and 90s youth in a movie that pays tribute to Hong Kong action cinema. Our Stuntman review:
Exploring similar territory to this summer’s The Fall Guy, but made with less noisy bombast, Stuntman is a heartfelt ode to the golden age of Hong Kong action cinema. It opens with what looks strikingly like the climactic set-piece in Jackie Chan’s 1985 masterpiece, Police Story – a bruising fight in a shopping mall, with hoodlums being side-kicked down escalators and sent crashing into glass display cases. This, we later learn, is the set of mid-90s martial arts crime movie Operation Vulture, on which Sam (Stephen Tung) was at the height of his powers as a stunt choreographer.
During the making of that film, however, a high-wire stunt involving a leap from a bridge and a moving truck went catastrophically wrong, almost fatally injuring...

The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power opened to big viewing numbers in the United States — just not as big as its first season.
The Prime Video series amassed 1.02 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, good for first place among original series and second among all titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Season two premiered on Aug. 29 with three episodes, and Nielsen says about 70 percent of the show’s weekly total was for those three, with the remainder devoted to season one. (Viewing totals on the ratings service’s charts cover all episodes of a series.)
The 1.02 billion minutes is down about 19 percent from season one’s opening week (1.25 billion) in August 2022. The Rings of Power ranks third among Prime Video series U.S. opening weeks this year behind Fallout (2.9 billion minutes) and The Boys (1.19 billion...

“Blink Twice” (Amazon MGM), actress Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut with Channing Tatum as a tech billionaire who invites a cocktail waitress to his private island, was a modest performer in theaters last month. Its opening weekend only reached #4 at the box office, earning $7 million, with the full run amounting to $22 million.
Flash forward a few weeks, and it is #1 for its debut week in PVOD. It jumped to the top even as three other new releases (all weaker performers) also made at least one of the two top 10 lists below.
Netflix continues to find appeal for its recent originals, with four films in its top five. These though were trumped by “The Garfield Movie,” the latest Sony release to transition to the streamer four months after release. Azazel Jacobs’ “His Three Daughters” (premiering at Toronto Film Festival last year and garnering an excellent 84 Metacritic score) is top among...

Hong Kong action film Stuntman will be released in the UK by Cineasia, and the first trailer has landed too.
Much like recent action comedy The Fall Guy, Stuntman is a Hong Kong movie set in its own film industry. Starring Stephen Tung Wai, it’s about a respected stuntman who’s forced to step away from the spotlight following an accident – something that also happened to Ryan Gosling’s lead in The Fall Guy, thinking about it.
At any rate, Stuntman is getting a UK release courtesy of Trinity Cineasia, and the distributor has handily put out an official synopsis, which goes like this:
Lee Sam (Stephen Tung Wai) was the undisputed king of stunt choreography during the golden era of Hong Kong action cinema in the 80s. After a devastating accident, Sam has stepped away from the industry for 30 years. His old friend, a veteran director, persuaded Sam...
