This past Monday at an event during the Banff World Media Festival, CineCoup 2015 shocked the crowd by offering what's known as The Big Deal to two projects: "Hellmington" and "High School Brawl." Each will receive up to $1,000,000 in production financing and a guaranteed “theatrical event” release in Cineplex theatres. This exciting result was made possible by a freshly announced financing partnership between CineCoup and Toronto/Calgary based alternative asset manager Clairwood Capital.
"Hellmington" and "High School Brawl,"and their two warrior-class filmmaking teams, earned The Big Deal accolade by equally impressing a panel of industry heavy-hitters, including producer Dan Goldberg ("Meatballs," "Hangover" trilogy), Michael Kennedy, Evp Filmed Entertainment, Cineplex Entertainment and Susan Curran, Executive Director of Marketing and Acquisitions, Anchor Bay Canada at the Live pitch event, the final phase of CineCoup’s 12-week film accelerator. The pitch included a video highlight reel and an intense Q&A between the panel and each of the finalists.
“We went looking for Canada’s best emerging filmmakers and genre projects, and these teams brought it! "Hellmington" and "High School Brawl" pushed the limits at every turn and we’re ready to help bring their vision to the big screen,” said J Joly CEO and Founder of CineCoup. “We’re amazed by the level of creativity that has surfaced from this cohort and are excited by our new partnership with Clairwood Capital to help expand from single pictures to a slate.”
"We’re ecstatic and can’t quite think straight!," said Alex Williams, Justin Hewitt and Michelle Aseltine of "Hellmington." "To think that we’ve come this far after only 12 twelve weeks and have the opportunity to scare audiences with our vision is amazing."
"We’ve been making movies together since high school and every filmmaking experience we’ve had has led us to this amazing moment. We are blown away!," said Aaron Kurmey, Kevin Johnson and Ryan Hatt of "High School Brawl."
“CineCoup’s lean and mean approach to filmmaking coupled with its unprecedented support of filmmakers aligns perfectly with our approach,” said Glenn Paradis, President and CEO, Clairwood Capital Management, Inc. “We’re eager to get production opportunities off the ground for additional Final 5 teams that show great promise.”
This week also marks the 1-year theatrical anniversary of CineCoup’s inaugural Big Deal,"WolfCop," the global cult phenomenon that serves as a benchmark for today’s Big Deal recipients. "WolfCop 2" will start shooting this summer and to kickoff the occasion CineCoup has launched an Indiegogo campaign that offers fans the opportunity to cast a celebrity cameo in the dirtier, hairier sequel: http://ow.ly/NZurR .
This announcement is the culmination of a demanding 12 weeks in CineCoup’s accelerator program. Close to 100 filmmaking teams from across Canada applied with a concept trailer for a feature film. Each week, filmmakers produced content to package their projects and build audiences on CineCoup’s social web platform. Indie film fans watched videos and earned votes to help teams advance through several gateways.
CineCoup is also actively pursuing partnerships to launch the platform into new media verticals and global markets.
