Apart from sporting a mean moniker, Gabriel Carrer’s vigilante film The Demolisher looks impacting and synthy; a hard edged throwback of citywide violence. The Demolisher is the fourth feature from Carrer, the Canadian indie filmmaker behind If A Tree Falls, Kill and the Henry Rollins-starring In The House of Flies. In the film, “Bruce (Ryan Barrett) is an ordinary repairman tormented…

Parade Deck Films has acquired worldwide rights to up-and-coming director Gabriel Carrer’s In the House of Flies (review here) from Latefox Pictures and will be giving it a same-day VOD and limited theatrical release in select cities beginning May 9th.
For his third and most diabolical outing as director, Carrer (If A Tree Falls) brings retro 80s psychological terror back to the masses. The film tells the story of Heather and Steven (Lindsay Smith and Ryan Kotack), who find their lives changed forever when they’re suddenly abducted.
The psychological thriller is produced by Carrer, Chad Archibald, Nathan Hawkins, and Dave McLeod. With a killer score by composer Steve MacDougall, the film also features music from 80s icons Saga and Brighton Rock.
“Parade Deck Films is the perfect home for our little movie, and I couldn’t be happier with what plans they have in store for it," says director Gabriel Carrer.

Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. In fact, you could even count the last three Dead movies by George A. Romero as Canadian — after all, he is a Canadian citizen now and made all three films in Toronto.
Being both a film writer and a host of a monthly horror film series called Fright Nights at the Projection Booth (based out of Toronto, Canada), I have noticed an incredible renaissance of grindhouse and horror directors coming out of Canada in the past few years. Southern Ontario,...

The Sundance Film Festival can be a significant launching pad for Oscar nominees. In the past few years, the best picture-nominated likes of “Precious,” “An Education,” “The Kids Are All Right” and “Winter’s Bone” all debuted at festival. But last year’s crop significantly fell short of the norm, despite what seemed like a lot of potential in films like “Take Shelter,” “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “Like Crazy.”
Films from the 2011 fest received only one nomination in the major categories: “Margin Call” for best original screenplay. The norm is more like 10 or 12 nominations. So will 2012 continue this trend, or bring us back to the heydays of 2009 and 2010?
Unfortunately, it’s probably the former. Despite a lot of sales, this year’s Sundance slate looks like it might be even less Oscar-friendly than last year. Nothing screamed “Oscar” like “Precious,” “An Education” and “The Kids Are All Right” have in...

"Black Fawn Distribution is a distribution company created specifically for filmmakers out there with amazing films that are getting blown off by the industry for not having enough 'Hollywood appeal' or 'mass marketability'. In the new indie horror flick If a Tree Falls, more kids get in a car for a scenic trip through the countryside and make it to their destination, happy and unscathed. Of course I'm bullshitting. That would be a completely awful movie, no?

From director Philip Carrer (Desperate Souls) and writer Ryan Barrett (Psycho Ward) comes the harrowing horror thriller "If A Tree Falls". If A Tree Falls has been winning rave reviews from various horror film websites. Looking at the trailer, it looks at though the film is intense, suspenseful and creates a tangible connection to the fear that the characters are experiencing.
In "If A Tree Falls", siblings, Brad and Lisa Carpenter, along with two lifelong family friends, Will and Vanessa, set out to cross Eastern Canada en route to an annual family reunion. Their road trip takes them through the scenic, isolated countryside of New Brunswick, on a blistering hot summer day. It's been a busy Fantasia for Chad Archibald and his Black Fawn Films. Not only is Archibald at the festival with his directorial effort Neverlost but he is also a producer on Philip Carrer's survival horror effort If A Tree Falls.
Due to have its world premiere on July 24th, here's an excerpt from the festival program guide:
A small group of young people are going on a road trip, planning on some camping into the woods. Once at their destination, the plan is to swim, relax and drink. However, a pack of menacing miscreants, not exactly chatty types, is lurking nearby. These strangers seem to have an unusual definition of the word fun, one that has a lot to do with suffering, and they get a kick out of filming themselves while having their "fun." It's pretty clear that If A Tree Falls won't lead to a happy ending.
