A shallow take on a great story
gabriel-rigo25 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you're a football fan or just happen to read the news when Neymar and football pops up, pretty much nothing on this show will be new to you.

It is great at telling the story of Neymar, his rise to stardom, his successes and failures, the way he balances the life of an athlete who constantly finds himself on the spotlight and the man who just wants to live his life, and his take on some of the events who happened along his career.

My main point of criticism is that the show fails to take a deeper look in his story, this may be because of the fact that Neymar himself does not like to open up, or maybe that's just how they wanted to run it, but it felt disapointing. I believe this documentary should be about the man behind the athlete, and not the other way around, as his story as an athlete is still being written.

Here are some interesting point I believe the show failed to take a closer look into:
  • His feelings about becoming a father at a young age and the prime of his career.

  • What it looked like to become a huge football star at the same time social medias were taking over, meaning he could never be just an athlete but also a celebrity.

  • The way he feels and what motivates him behind his decisions, an example of this would be when he talks about his decision to move to PSG, he just says it wasn't for money, which left a feeling of "well, then why did you do it?"
  • How the visible strain on the relationship with his father made him feel.

  • The goals he still has left on his career.

And I could go on, but I feel like I made my point. Overall, it's a good show if you wanna relive some football history, but not a good one if your goal is to take a closer look at Neymar. The only thing you will actually learn from the show is how harsh his dad is on him, and how he fails to see how his soon could hire a million managers, but could not hire a father.

A good series about Neymar. Would recommend!
lauritsstryhn25 January 2022
I personally think this is really well made. Always been a Neymar Jr. Fan and really enjoyed watching this short series. It kept me interested the whole time so I didn't even realize I had just spent 3 hours watching this in one go. So I would definitely recommend watching it.

Very lukewarm, average at best
SpideySwag30 January 2022
Learned very little by watching this. Production was pretty average, not surprising since Lebron james is one of the executive producers, and storytelling was also unremarkable. There were some interesting footages that I hadn't seen before regarding some of the events in his life, but I feel that people who are familiar with football and Neymar will walk away with pretty much nothing new.

The translators: distracting
pwcleary13 December 2022
Weird choice of translators. Seems like a Japanese Anime. Outside of that, not too shabby. It's really hard to establish an establish an aesthetic-distance with these translators, but this athlete deserves the attention. Overall, pretty good if tou can get over the voice-overs. Fill space with repeat here. Also, Mad Max sucks.

LITERAL PERFECT CHAOS
zaynabrashidaksa26 January 2022
One kind of documentary that ill suggest to the sport lovers and ney admirers all around the world. It is seriously a masterpiece and perfect chaos on its own. People have gone harsh on ney for the past years, but this series is defo gonna give you a clear image of neymars life, passion and behaviour which is sure to make you believe that this fella is an overhated lad. Nothing else. The first episode was quite interesting for me and i didnt know how that 50 mins were passed. Looking forward for more of these kinda legendary documentary!! IN SHORT, WORTH WATCHING.

Superficial and mostly self-serving
paul-allaer26 January 2022
"Neymar: The Perfect Chaos" (2022 release; 3 episodes totaling 165 min.) is a documentary about Brazilian footballer Neymar. As Episode 1 opens, Neymar is asked how he would like to open the documentary and Neymar suggests "random quotes", which we then promptly are served, mostly talking heads who are quick to judge Neymar the person, with one of them saying that "Neymar seems to enjoy the perfect chaos". We then go to "Paris 2017" when Neymar shocks the football world by forcing a transfer away from Barcelona and going to Paris Saint Germain for a world record transfer fee

Couple of comments: this documentary mini-series is directed by David Charles Rodrigues, who I admit I had never heard of before. More importantly, the series is produced by Lebron James (whose jersey Neymar wears at times in the documentary, along with Kobe Bryant's). Let's be clear: Neymar is a fantastic footballer. But is this a good documentary? The series was made with the full cooperation of Neymar and his family, providing tons of never before seen footage (often from Neymar's cell phone). It is clear that the Neymar family and organization has one objective in mind more than anything else: to protect and preserve the Neymar brand. On a number of occasions, we hear Neymar Sr. (his dad, who also is his manager) explain to the NR Sports management company employees that Neymar's playing days will be over "in 10 years" and that the brand must go on afterwards. Yes, the documentary briefly touches upon Neymar's most controversial moments including when he is accused of rape, but it is brushed over in a few moments, with Neymar stating that "anyone who knows me knows that I am a man of character, who would never do anything like that", and we simply must take it at face value. Surely this will not be the last documentary on Neymar, and I for one look forward to getting an independent look at Neymar at some point. May I suggest the Oscar winning documentarian Asif Kapadia, who brought us "Diego Maradona", "Amy", and "Senna", just to name those, all of which set the gold standard of making compelling, must-see documentary bio-pics.

"Neymar: The Perfect Chaos" premiered on Netflix this week, and as a die-hard soccer fan, I couldn't wait to see it. I watched all 3 episodes in a single setting last night. While it is fun to see snippets of Neymar's personal life, for me this documentary mini-series falls short of the high standards of other documentary bio-pics, such as those from the afore-mentioned Asif Kapadia. But of course don't take my word for it, so I encourage you to check this out, and draw your own conclusion.

I am actually one of those people that watches soccer on a daily basis and did not expect much from the show itself but I enjoyed so much, in my opinion a 10 out of 10.

Neymarketing Strikes Again
danivbmello28 January 2022
No one needs to waste 3 hours to find out the young player is more worried about how much money he makes out of marketing his own image than playing well.

This series is basically Neymar's career change explained: from Soccer Player to Digital Influencer.

Impossible to watch this
fenixlakshmi17 February 2023
It is a really self service documentary to fill his own ego.

Maybe his friends and family can be satisfied watching it. That in my humble opinion this documentary was made only to them to watch.

It does not add any important detail of his life and everything is completely shallow and pointless.

They are always trying to focus on his one and only point of view, not adding people that confront and question attitudes, always trying to put him as victim of what?

So, if you have watched all the movies in this entire world, you might want to spend your time to watch this totally unnecessary documentary.

It's not good.
Kol8831 January 2022
This is just awful to watch, I expected to see something that will make him more likeable but this "documentary" is just bad, serving as a self-service for neymar nothing more and nothing else. Honestly don't waste time watching this, just watch anything else instead, Netflix has a lot of things watch anything else, this review probably won't be published but I had to write because this one was so bad.

Great documentary!
jasonvargas-8932818 January 2023
The Neymar Jr documentary was a fascinating look into the life and career of one of the world's top soccer players. From his humble beginnings in Brazil to his rise to fame at Barcelona and PSG, the film provided a unique and intimate perspective on Neymar's personal and professional journey. The footage of his incredible goals and game-winning moments was breathtaking, and the interviews with his family, friends, and teammates offered valuable insight into the person behind the player. Overall, the documentary was well-produced, engaging, and a must-watch for any soccer fan.

I hope there will be a sequel in the future!
