The Kiss Nightclub fire is deemed one of Brazil's deadliest, sharing striking similarities with the Station fire in Rhode Island (the years prior), the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston and the Lame Horse Fire in Kiev, Russia. All these tragedies were caused by inadequate use of fire or pyrotechnics, which generated ignition of flammable material.
Although smoke inhalation has been credited for it, most victims of the Kiss nightclub fire actually perished from exposure to cyanide gas released in the blaze. This chemical was produced by the burning of the soundproofing foam on the ceiling, contributing to the high number of fatalities.
Production specifically decided to not film any scenes on real locations.
Grazi's character and plot are inspired by survivor Kelen Ferreira, who had her leg amputated and suffered severe burns at Kiss. Though she chose to not testify to Daniela Arbex's book on which this series is based, Ferreira supported production from the start. Grazi is played by Paola Antonini (a real life amputee), in her acting debut.
According to Miguel Roncato, the scenes prior to the fire were more difficult to film. "It gets a lot more complicated to shoot happy moments, because we know the outcomes and feel what those people felt on that moment".
