- "V" - "We Can't Win" - April 20, 2010
Chad and Anna travel to Geneva for a political forum at which she plans to present to the world the gift of "Blue Energy" which she says offers answers to some of the world's most pressing problems.
The secretary-general head is skeptical of her presence and doesn't want her to present anything. Speaking to Chad off the record he says the V's "gifts" are a drain on the world's bottom line- healing centers are ruining health care and their technology could imperil other industries. Chad thinks he's more worried about commerce than the health of people and the poltician says they're intertwined.
After seeing news of a devastating monsoon in "Timbal" Anna has Marcus send V troops to bring them Blue Energy in an effort to show up the politicians who are still trying to organize their relief response.
It works as planned as Blue Energy restores the power in Timbal. The politicians relent and let her present at the forum. She holds up two little balls and pushes them together. This creates blue and white waves throughout the room that says represent "clean sustainable energy." She says it's the same power that runs their ships. She takes the balls apart and it stops. The group applauds. She says the V needs are simple and her desire to help is genuine. The leader shakes her hand and says they have much to learn from her.
Chad asks him for another off the record comment. The politician, still clearly skeptical, says Anna came under the guise of bringing a gift and played the politics of tragedy to gain clout. He asks if they're just "visitors" why does she need political clout?
Chad comes to the ship and confronts Anna about her savior-dom and asks what would've happened if there hadn't been a tragedy in Timbal. She says there would've been one somewhere else. He says she thinks she's a god. She asks that what makes him. He says a believer and he believes they're not visitors but here to stay but why, for the benefit of Vs or humans? She says to help. He says he wants to be part of doing good if that's what they're doing. She says she needs people she can trust. She asks if he trusts her. He doesn't answer.
Later Marcus wants to know why they're giving humans Blue Energy. Anna says so they can turn it off once the humans are dependent on it.
Back on the New York ship Lisa fails the empathy test admitted by Joshua. She says it must be a mistake, that her assignment to make Tyler fall in love with her distorted the results. He says too bad, Anna said anyone who failed was to be immolated without exception.
On the ship Tyler- who is still mad at Erica- finds Lisa and she says it's a bad time. He's upset and she's empathetic to that. He says he really needs her and to be away from home right now. Her too, she says. They take some kind of small spaceship into the stratosphere. Tyler floats the idea of joining the live-aboard program. They make out. She makes sure they take off their prying-eye camera jackets. The moment of truth upon them Tyler asks if Vs, um, "do this." She says no and then proceeds to do it anyway.
Joshua and his Fifth Column buddy debate over immolating Lisa. Joshua's against it thinking she can be a great asset to the cause. He's known her forever and thinks she may be becoming human. The other dude says they'd never be able to trust her and wonders if it's a trick to test Joshua's own loyalties.
Tyler and Lisa return to the main ship and Joshua says Anna's coming back and wants to see her. Lisa says Tyler has to go. He says he'll see her tomorrow and she just says goodbye.
Anna tells Lisa that the future of their species depends on Lisa's leadership and judgement. She says there is no room for human emotion or weakness of any kind. She hands her an egg from the nest that has the growing army of soldiers in it and breaks it between their hands. She says Joshua told her she passed the empathy test and that she never doubted her.
Lisa confronts Joshua and he says one day he'll ask a favor from her and she'll comply.
Through an FBI investigation Erica and the V-hunting gang learn that the Vs have killed another Fifth Column cell. One guy survived the attack- Alex Caruso. After Jack visits his dad in the hospital they track him down. He's freaked. He explains he's Fifth Column and they set up a meeting after seeing the message on the ship. The V showed up and now they know names of other FC peeps thanks to an FC website. Since there was a hard drive missing Erica knows the Vs have the info and thinks they'll pick 'em off one by one. Hobbes want to avoid that by using Caruso as bait. Erica doesn't want to kill, but interrogate when they catch him. Alex is up for it. Jack is bummed since he promised Alex's dad he'd keep him safe but he suits up.
Ryan says the Vs are usually about close combat with knives but when they set Alex as bait at an amusement park they send a sniper who kills Alex. Erica runs him down. He gets the upper hand but Jack shoots him and, to their horror, they discover the assassin is human. Tied up for interrogation they ask him why he is working as a hired killer for the Vs and he says because there's no way the humans can win.
Ryan- who has been looking for Val since she took off after discovering Ryan is covering something up- has Erica trace her cell phone. She traces it to a V healing center. The V doctor scans the baby, freaks slightly but then says it's not serious. Val wants to see. He won't let her. Ryan comes in and kills/immolates the V just as he's about to harm Val. They take off.
