A Touching Episode
slightlymad2216 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this episode more than the previous one "zoo or false" mainly because of the touching nature of it ending.

Plot An A Paragraph: Ted is very upset that his mother is getting married for a second time to the free-spirited Clint, while he is yet to get married once. (Ted refers to this as his mam is lapping him) Upset at the wedding, Ted stormed out of the reception and is not seen again for 72 hours. When he resurfaces, he takes the gang for a little drive. At their destination it is revealed Ted has bought a house on a whim, everybody tells him he is crazy. However he is determined this fixer upper is his dream house. Meanwell Marshall invents a game called "was I drunk, or was I was a kid" and everybody tries to figure out who cried at text mums wedding, Barney or Robin??

I loved the ending to this episode, as a quick montage with Ted's voice-over explaining that the fixer he bought, was in fact the house that he lived in with the mother and the children whilst the song "Our House" by Crosby Stills Nash and Young played over it, is a highlight of the entire show not just this season. Surprisingly touching.

A refreshing episode
simbrab5 July 2016
This episode wouldn't have really stood out in season 4. But in a season full of generic sitcom jokes and low on plot development, its emotional depth is refreshing.

While the plot of 'Home Wreckers' doesn't necessarily bring Ted closer to meeting The Mother, it features an important moment in his life (or two, actually). Once again Marshall is being a great friend to him in a heart-warming scene.

In terms of continuity, there's a noteworthy flashback of Barney driving Ted's mother to the airport, which refers to the events of S02E03 ('Brunch'). It starts with her finishing the story about her brooch, the story Barney asked her to tell him back in said episode. A nice little detail. Then again, the scene shows Barney driving a car before the events of 'Arrivederci Fiero', where it was implied (although it wasn't explicitly stated that this was still the case in the present of that episode as it was revealed via a flashback) that he never learned how to drive.

Home Wreckers (#5.20)

Warning: Spoilers
I like this episode. Let's one both have strong empathy for Ted and at the same time is really not short on laughter.

Ted's mom and her new husband are a pretty fun couple, I wouldn't mind to see more of them. And Ted is just brought to depressive thoughts on how he is still single. I never get him being so upset about it, but I could really feel bad for him in this episode.

And he does a stupid thing. Although as it looks it will work out fine for him as we got to see his home where he lives with his children. I lived the kid or drunk part with Marshall! And them all wrecking the house was also wonderful.

The ending was great as well. There is the sweet gesture of Ted to come to his mother and her husband and read the toast, but they are baked! And Marshall having the first bbq for Ted at his house. Great friend!

A standout episode
ACriticalCritic25 January 2024
This is amongst one of those episodes from the pack of 200+ episodes in all, where you look back and recognize where the series began to show signs that it was something more than just a standard half-hour sitcom. We seen some flexibility in this episode with the ability to remain funny and remain in that comedic tone while blending some deeper elements into it. We would see much more of this after season 6 or so, but it was a couple episodes before that where it seemed to experiment with the idea of going a little deeper. It worked here - as it did throughout the second half of the series. This is one highlight of this show that seems to separate it from the batch of other traditional network sitcoms. It was great about carrying larger plots and storylines throughout its run; while managing the episode-to-episode formula each week in the traditional way. So you could drop in at any episode or season during re-watch and take it as you would any other long-running sitcom. You can watch 1 or 2 episodes or binge watch - either way you have a story in its completion each episode, with an ongoing mystery yet to be revealed until the end of the series. It's creative, new for its time, always funny, the chemistry between the cast members is nearly unmatched, the scenery of NYC at the backdrop and the overall theme and vibes is special. It has a way of bringing you back to 2005 or 2010 in every way. While remaining as relevant and funny today as ever.

But this episode is one of the first in the series to prove that it's so much more than just a sitcom - that a very special show is before you and yet to reveal itself in its entirety. This is due to CBS giving the writers and creators so much freedom to do what they wanted with their show. And it proved magical. Sometimes the network executives just need to back off and allow the younger talent time and freedom. You just might get something amazing.

Drunk or Kid
shanc_sk26 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
A nice episode but not as funny as "Zoo or False" (man, the way Barney pulls off the Neil Armstrong statement is fantastic ).

As with Ted, we also don't meet the MOTHER, but we get introduced to his present home. Now that does that give an indication that his Wife will make an appearance soon. Cant say that... Initially, i didn't think the creators would take the series till 5 seasons without bringing her in, so they can get another 5 seasons as well.

Highlights: 1. Who cried? 2. Your p**** is enormous. 3. Drunk or Kid 4. Barney was planning to become Ted's dad 5. & of course... Mahatma Gandhi, and the pancakes, and the dragon and you
