'BLUE CRUSH 2': Two Stars (Out of Five)

I'm a big fan of the original 'BLUE CRUSH' (from 2002), it's kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm not really into surfing or surf movies but I do highly enjoy that film and it's probably my favorite of the genre (other than maybe 'POINT BREAK'). Now, nine years later, comes another direct to video sequel. Another sequel in name only (merely cashing in on the brand name of the first movie) as the film has nothing to do with the original other than it's about surf girls trying to follow their dreams of being surfers. It was directed and produced by Mike Elliot, who's produced a slew of direct to video sequels ('DEATH RACE 2', 'SMOKIN ACES 2' and 'AMERICAN PIE: THE BOOK OF LOVE', just to name his most recent) and directed one ('BEETHOVEN'S BIG BREAK', his only other directing credit). The film was written by Randall McCormick who's made a name for himself writing 'B' movie sequels (like two 'SCORPION KING' films as well as 'SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL'). This time the film stars three lovely young ladies by the names of Sasha Jackson, Sharni Vinson and Elizabeth Mathis. The girls are beautiful eye candy (especially Vinson, who also recently starred in the excessive sequel 'STEP UP 3D') but they're not nearly as interesting or memorable as Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez and pro surfer Sanoe Lake from the original. Everything about the film just feels like a stale imitation 'wannabe'.

This chapter tells the story of a young rich girl named Dana (Jackson) grieving over the death of her mother and absence of her father's love. She knows that her mom always dreamt of surfing Jeffereys Bay in South Africa so she decides to leave the security of her Malibu home behind and venture to Africa in order to fulfill her mother's dreams. Once there she meets two other young female surfers by the names of Pushy (Mathis) and Tara (Vinson). One, Tara, is a successful 'Roxy' surfer and the other dreams of being one. So Dana and Pushy decide to conquer their surfing dreams together, while some bitter rivalry ensues with Tara.

The first 'BLUE CRUSH' made Kate Bosworth a star (before that she was pretty much unknown), it also made her one of my favorite actresses (along with her work that followed but 'CRUSH' definitely introduced me to her). I thought she not only obviously looked great but gave a good performance (as did the other two leads). That film definitely made you care about their characters. You don't have that with this film. The girls look cute and they might be able to act, if given a chance in another film, but here they're not relatable or interesting in the least. That's probably due in large part to weak directing and a poorly written screenplay (more so than the girls' acting). The story just isn't involving and the surf scenes aren't visually interesting or thrilling at all. Hardcore surf fans still might enjoy this movie (as well as obsessive fans of hot surf girls) but everyone else will mostly be bored.

vastly inferior to the original
SnoopyStyle19 March 2016
Dana (Sasha Jackson) is a rich California girl. Her father is pushing her to settle down but she is restless to follow her surfer mother's footsteps back to her home country of South Africa. She surfs the waves and takes the same Polaroids as her mother. She befriends a black surfer named Pushy (Elizabeth Mathis). She is confronted by alpha dog Tara. There is a community of surfers who is squatting on the beach. Tim is a nice photographer. Grant is the charming surfer but he could be bad news. While chasing down her mother's stuff that was stolen, Dana and Pushy discover something darker.

This is more or less a TV movie that is vastly inferior to the original. The original's cast has charisma and spunk. Sasha Jackson is a really pretty girl but she is mostly a Polaroid copy. Going to South Africa has some potential but mostly it is indistinguishable from countless other beach movies. There is plenty of pretty people on the beach and surfing. Then it tries to add some tough drama but it plays more like an after-school special. Even the surfing doesn't seem as exciting. The drama feels manufactured, the thrills are light and the actors don't stick.

Not good...
Thanos_Alfie1 February 2014
"Blue Crush 2" is the sequel of "Blue Crush" and this one has to do with a girl who is haunted by the memory of her deceased mother and she goes to South Africa to fulfill her mother's dream of surfing in Jefferys Bay (J-Bay).

I did not like this movie as much as the first and I think that this movie is a repeat of the first because and in the first movie we had a girl who was haunted by her own daemons and she was trying so hard to get rid from them and fulfill her own dream (this is a difference).

Finally I think that this movie It's not as good as the first one I believe that the only interpretation that was good was Sasha Jackson's who played as Dana.

Blue Crush 2 isn't an imitation of Blue Crush... It is a coming of age story of a young surfer girl traveling to "find herself"
ben-117-68363726 July 2011
Blue Crush 2 isn't an imitation of Blue Crush.

It is an entirely different story.

Blue Crush 2 is a traveling/coming of age story. A young surfer girl goes to South Africa to follow in her mother's footsteps and in the process find herself.

The acting isn't great. But that isn't the point is it? The movie is about surfing and traveling to great surf spots in South Africa.

Yes it is a cheap direct to video sequel. They don't have the budget of the original and they don't have the same star power as Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez. However is the movie still enjoyable? Does it tell a good story? Do you enjoy the surf scenes? Do you enjoy meeting her "beach family"?

I think so. Perhaps it is because I wasn't looking for an Oscar caliber film. Perhaps it is because I wasn't even looking to replace Blue Crush and I'm not offended that Kate Bosworth isn't in it (the other reviewer obviously is crushing on Kate badly.) Perhaps it is because I've gone through my own life change recently and am envious of our lead character's ability to travel South Africa and surf the legendary surf spots.

The movie for me, is good fun, and helps me keep "life" in perspective.

I'm looking to start my "Odyssey" soon.

Disappointing
annadjohnson15 January 2012
I wasn't expecting much for this movie; however, as I watched my expectations lowered very quickly.

The acting is sub-par, as is the plot in general. The plot is not very complex; although by seeing the commercial for this film that secret is already blown off.

It seemed as if the directors just plucked outgoing teenagers from the region where they were supposed to be from, shoved them into bikinis, gave them a script, and then recorded.

The most frustrating quality of this movie is the volume. It frequently fluctuated from a soft whisper to an extremely loud burst of sound. Around every 2-3 minutes I had to adjust the volume.

Hardly any redeeming qualities. I turned it off after about 60 minutes. Did not like this movie.

It is not as good as the first one but good enough

(2011) Blue Crush 2 DRAMA

Straight to rental which is completely unrelated to the first film other than the title and it is also a surfing movie, with a whole new cast which the only thing both films have in common is that they're about surfing. And if you can get pass the mediocre acting then this film is not bad and could've been better had it had a higher budget. It's also a very superficial film when everything works well or neat toward the end, and the approach is not like what one can find in a Disney film since theirs is an occasional swear word or two. Anyways, as I've said I'm able to appreciate it's 'original' story line over the second rate acting starring Sasha Jackson as Dana who happens to be the only daughter of a frequent surfer but had died while Dana was very young. As a result of a disagreement with her father, she then goes on an "odyssey" to surf through all the South African locations her mother had surfed from the pictures mimic her stances including the one she had never succeeded on surfing called "Jeffrey's Bay" or J-Bay for short. Upon her arrival she strikes up a great relationship with an African local calling herself Pushy played by Elizabeth Mathis, who Dana need as a guide to some of the more popular surfing locations throughout Africa. And she strikes up a deal with Dana to train Pushy to be a surfer herself, so that she can make it to the surfing team. This straight to rental is not better than the first one but it's good enough.

Played out like one long episode of One Tree hill
jens-wegar17 October 2012
You've got a bunch of barely out of high school kids living the life out in Africa. A surfer movie, which still tries to put in a bit of crime solving, a bit of a road trip, a bit of a love triangle and a bit of family drama. The acting in many parts was pretty mediocre, only a few highlights in there. Especially one scene where the father argues with the daughter sounds so rehearsed it's just ends up feeling weird. Another one was the in a tryout for a sponsorship contract in which the commentators sounded so bored you wondered if they hadn't been given their dose of Red Bull. The only thing this movie is consistent about is the use of music in almost every scene.

There is no surprise in how the movie plays out, but on the other hand I guess it doesn't really try to be anything other than what it is: a feel good surfer movie. If you're into surfing you'll have loads of scenery to watch, and probably also get quite a bit of inspiration out of the waves. Others may just as well come up with something else to watch.

Blue Crush is a junk production
gfx-612-81724218 February 2013
I know several people that was involved in this production, and lots of them are disappointed and were not aware it's going to be such a bad movie. The target market are teens, but teens are way more discerning. It's really an insult to South African surfing, contains bad acting and there are lots of big continuity errors. For instance, the culminating competition in the story held at Jeffreys Bay was shot at a KZN South Coast spot (Look at the jet ski's registration number) You've got actors that can't surf and surfers that can't act. Bruce Gold was portrayed as a pilot, why did they not let him play himself? Why cast Twiggy and Jordy in non surfing roles? Then you have the girls take off on a wave, and suddenly when they zoom out, it's clearly visible they are on completely another wave, at another location. This is not the error of the cast and crew, I believe this is the error of the people that produced and directed this movie. What were they thinking? I guess their only goal was to sell a couple of DVD's to unsuspecting buyers and make something from rental outlets. If you have that kind of budget, why no produce something of more significance and a high standard?

Apologies in advance for my awful surfing terminology.
Mr_Sophistication_Uk17 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Only in the fantasy land of Hollyweird could an 18-year old white rich Californian girl, disillusioned with life in the rat race, turns up unexpectedly in South Africa and instantly befriend a group of travelling bohemian types who just live for the surf, man. Oh, she has her money stolen upon entry, but this is no obstacle to a down-to-earth socialite such as her! Soon, she's hitting those waves to reignite her mother's dying wish to see all the country, whilst falling in love with the local Nice Guy who fixes boards for a living, and rejecting the advances of the arrogant POS who traffics in stolen elephant ivory. BOO, HISS to him, I say!

As you can probably see, there isn't much to get your shackles in here, aside from some very healthy tanned 20-somethings who look great in their bathing suits hitting those gnarly waves and looking damn fine while doing it, too. You probably don't need to be a screenplay genius to figure out that our main character patches things up with her estranged father, gets her new bestie a spot on the all-girl surfing team and succeeds in her ambition of visiting every 'hidden' South African surf spot in existence. In fact, happy endings all round. Totally radical, man!

The only problem is, this is all very laboured, dull, unimaginative material to say the least. So if you want good vibes with barely a hint of actual quality, this may be the jam for you. Otherwise, it's like, a total wipeout, bros. Adios, amigos! 4/10.

Low budget= dedicated actors/actress but bad accents
molly-groves2 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Blue Crush 2 tried to show the hard life of a surfer girl. The new approach of showing the hard life of a rich girl instead of a poor Hawaiian who just wanted to make it big, like they did in Blue Crush 1, wasn't a big thing for many people. The acting was good enough to keep you involved in the movie but the only thing that could have been better was the accents of the characters. Sasha Jackson constantly had her original dialect slip in the movie, which made it noticeable because she was playing the American surfer girl Dana. Elizabeth Mathis and Gideon Emery had convincing parts as Pushy and Dana's father and the characters of Tim, Tara, and Grant completed the story well. The acting of Sasha Jackson was OK but if they really wanted her as the rule they should of changed the storyline cause her accent sucked in the movie. The big plus was that the main actors/actress did do a decent part of their surfing. All in all the movie wasn't that bad, and in fact I bought it on DVD because I love when a low budget film does a good job of showing the storyline

Not that bad, not the best bet, I'd still want to watch it again
nathan-5179 February 2012
This movie was fun for me. I saw adds for this on TV and the fact that is was straight to DVD made me doubt it's potential, but being a fan of the original I figured I give it a chance, so when I saw this on Netflix I thought it'd be something to watch to pass the time. I was impressed by it, granted it definitely wasn't the greatest acting and lines were cheesy here and there but I did enjoy it.

It was an entirely different story from the first and I enjoyed that fact, they weren't trying to continue off a story that people forgot about a decade ago. The story is about a California girl trying to find her own and the only way she knows how is to retrace her mother's surfing footsteps in South Africa, with only a picture album to go on she flies SA and starts her journey, but it's not as simple as she thought it be and immediately doubts herself and her journey. However she manages to make new friends that help her with her goal to walk in her mother's footsteps.

I find movies like this really entertaining, they know they won't be making the Oscar's or win awards but they do the best they can. It's a very chill and relaxing film, paying homage to most surf films which is basically a "chill or be chill" vibe which in it's own right is a very attractive scenario, at least for me.

I give this film 8 because the acting isn't the best and it get's cheesy in some parts but overall this is a great film it's worth a watch if you like surfer flicks and it's something relaxing enough to watch on a lazy day. Like I said in the title, not the best but I'm still going to watch it again.

Nowhere near the original "Blue Crush" but has some redeeming qualities.
TxMike31 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This appears to be a direct-to-video movie release. It was shot on a small budget and on a short schedule and using mostly unknown actors. You get what you pay for. Still, we enjoyed it for the fluff of a diversion, with some cute girls in surfing mode.

For me the biggest surprise and the most interest is British actress, trained in Hollywood and with a good American accent, Sasha Jackson as Dana. This is Dana's story. She is 18 and not ready to fulfill her wealthy father's dream of her college education. Dana's mother, a surfer girl originally from Soith Africa, died of cancer when Dana was only 5. Her memories of mom are mostly from the photos she has. She yearns for more.

When dad is on a business trip, and Dana at 18 is an adult and apparently has full access to their wealth, leaves a note that she is headed to South Africa. As the story unfolds we learn that she wants to visit the places her mom knew, and surf the same waves. A southern California girl, Dana is an accomplished surfer.

Sasha Jackson brings a fresh face and a ready smile to the screen. Her acting is a cut above the others and I can only hope she gets better roles. I read her biography on IMDb and she apparently was a high level diver and trampolinist in England, and learned to surf for this role. She is the best reason to see Blue Crush 2.

Her journey is NOT without surprises. The first is when she hits the first beach, putting her backpack into a beach locker, only to find it broken into and items stolen. She makes friends with a girl named "Pushy" and also with a couple of guys. She ends up living temporarily with a group, a "family" of sorts, of beach bums.

But for a low budget it has a nice look to it. Elizabeth Mathis is the new friend, Pushy. Ben Milliken is the new friend with the old bus for a home, Tim. Australian Sharni Vinson is the bitchy primadonna surfer Tara. (But she does soften up at the end.)

SPOILERS: Dana's dad hops on a plane and eventually looks her up at the final beach of her journey. They make up, and it seems that Dana is ready to put her mom's death behind her and get on with life.

Not the best yes but Enjoyable
noctularm9818 October 2012
Obviously I haven't watched the original 2002 Blue Crush but I don't wanna compare anyway because then this one would be under the shadow as I am seeing in these reviews. I enjoyed the movie not only because Pushy's Zulu name is Nokuthula(which she couldn't pronounce very well by the way) but also because as the first surfing movie I've seen, it was a great experience. I am tired of all those cheer leading movies and football and all other common sports. It was nice to see something different for a change.

I must say I liked the combination of race(specifically imitating African black as opposed to any black race). The flexibility of Dana's character kept the storyline nice because I expected her to rent a hotel or something but she settled nicely in those shacks getting along with those poor pple. It was interesting for me. Thanx.

Great all-around Honest Surf Movie!
Rich_Without_Much_Money21 October 2020
I started an account here, to leave needed ~ to the point ~ honest reviews...this is my 1st... As far as a Surf Movie for entertainment goes ~ this is one of the best! ~ Honestly! Watch it and enjoy! A California girl does a Surfari in S.Africa with a native...from Durban down to JBay...EPIC! For a HOLLYWOOD surf film - it's a 10! I also need to mention that it has depth, and addresses a couple of issues, that are missing from most other surf movies, it also has a nice light-heartedness and a good mix and amount of humor. P.S. It's the perfect surf movie to watch with the wife! Also, IMHO, this one is much better than the 1st one, and the sub-plot of a girl's competition is less of a focus in this one!

It rocks!
neuroepidr-5333610 June 2022
Great surfing movie! I loved the plot and you cannot tell when will happen next. As a cognitive neuroscientist, I also loved how past experiences have such a strong effect on the present. Watch the movie and you will see. If you like Blue Crush, which is also great. Blue Crush 2 is totally different, but equally as unique and great. I loved the filming and storyline. Great ending as well! As a surfer in so Cali, surf on!

I'm not much into made up movies, it was a happy end one, but since Icame to watch it more than once I concider it great. It's oldschool and have a great plot and summer vibes. A human story told in a great way. Love it!
