The big news in home movie viewing this week isn’t that new-to-pvod “The Wild Robot” (Universal) and “Alien: Romulus” (Disney) split the #1 positions on the iTunes and Fandango top 10 charts.
The significant development is that both, like “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney), rent for 48 hours at $24.99, not the standard $19.99. That’s a 25 percent increase for PVOD, an increasingly essential source of studio revenue.
A few big hits have tested the $24.99 rental, including “Dune 2” and “Inside Out 2,” but “Robot” and “Alien” are successes of just over $100 million, not blockbusters.. Studios get 80 percent of the cost after a small carrier fee; the $5 increase represents about $4 more for each rental.
DreamWorks Animation’s “Robot” arrives after its third weekend in theaters. That’s not unusual for Universal, although in recent months they sometimes held back another week or two for bigger titles.
Marketing for the home showings may boost theater attendance.

The 1989 action classic Road House (watch it Here) recently got a decent enough Prime Video remake that’s set to receive a sequel – which is something the original movie should have gotten around 1991 or so. But no matter what other movies use the Road House title, nothing will ever compare to that ’89 movie… which I have vivid memories of watching at a drive-in during its initial release. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of Road House, the estate of musician Jeff Healey has announced that they’re teaming up with Sony Music and Mondo Music to bring us Road House: The Lost Soundtrack, the complete, previously unreleased soundtrack that Healey recorded for the film.
Road House: The Lost Soundtrack is available to pre-order from the Jeff Healey Estate’s official website and will also be available on all major streaming platforms on June 7th, courtesy of Sony Music. This release features...

Netflix Italy has been churning out a lot of movies and television shows from their home country. Usually, Italy is only known for its scenic beauty, but lately, Netflix has taken it upon themselves to change the narrative about the country. Just last week, Netflix Italy released a show about a transitioned woman that was presented very sensitively, A Life You Wanted. Tearsmith, however, was swing-and-a-miss in the psychological drama, and it borderline became cringeworthy. The Price of Nonna’s Inheritance is Netflix Italy’s venture into a comedy-drama about a family in dire need of money. The movie was released on June 4, 2024, and was written and directed by Giovanni Bognetti.
It is hardly ninety minutes long, and it is all about Anna and her family, which consists of her husband Carlo, daughter Alessandra, and son Emilio, who are desperate for money to fund their endeavors. They are aware their grandmother,...

One of the most popular rappers is in legal hot water on a massive scale. Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny is riding high, with a Spider-Man spinoff movie on the way and a prominent role in an upcoming WWE pay-per-view. But a major lawsuit has come his way. It could put a damper on his otherwise great year.
The “Mia” rapper put something on one of his albums that may have been ill-advised. His vulnerable approach to lyrics and production may have hit too close to home for someone who used to be a big part of his life. The hit on his bank account might be far more than he ever thought possible.

Even at 92, Clint Eastwood isn’t ready to slow down as he has set the thriller Juror #2 as his next film, with Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette in negotiations to star. While it isn’t official, sources also add that with schedules and budget figured, Warner Bros. — Eastwood’s longtime studio home — is close to officially greenlighting the film. Jonathan Abrams penned the script. Adam Goodman, Matt Skiena, Tim Moore and Jessica Meier will produce.
The pic is set during a murder trial where one of the jurors slowly realizes he killed the victim in a reckless-driving accident and tries to save the defendant without incriminating himself. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell will exec produce.
In typical Eastwood fashion, the Oscar winner had been weighing several scripts and in recent months zeroed in on Juror #2. He began having talks with A-list talent to star, finally landing on Hoult as the...

You never want bad films to happen to great actors, but every once in a while one of your favorites inevitably turns up in an unfortunate and miscalculated clunker. Sadly, Catherine Hardwicke’s “Mafia Mamma” is that movie for Toni Collette. While she is one of the most fearless and versatile actors working today, Collette looks somewhat lost here as the story’s accidental crime boss on a quest to, well, “Eat Pray F*ck” (as one character in the film so elegantly puts it).
Despite having directed a fiercely diverse slate of genre-spanning blockbusters and indies across TV and the big screen—she’s done everything from “Thirteen,” to “Twilight” and “Miss Bala”— even Hardwicke seems a little bewildered in a script jointly penned by Michael J. Feldman and Debbie Jhoon, based on an original story by Amanda Sthers.

Dysfunctional family dramas can be a good watch if they are written well and they can portray the familial dynamics in the most accurate manner. The fact that there is a genre that brings to the screen how our actual families function makes the viewing of these dramas more interesting. “The Estate” is one such film that talks about a chronically ill member of the family, but the extended family, instead of being there for the matriarch who is on her deathbed, descends on her humongous property only to make sure she considers them in her will one last time before she dies. Sounds despicable, but the cousins and other family members are desperate and unable to come to terms with the fact that the aunt is dying alone and without an heir, so they’re after a piece of the cake as well.

March brings a fresh slate of new shows and films to Hulu. The rotation of the catalogue also makes room for well-loved films arriving on the streamer this month. It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Anna Faris hasn’t been in the spotlight much over the past few years, but now that she has had time to reflect and relax outside of the business, she feels she is ready to be active once again, even getting some new characters out there.
In a recent interview with People, Anna Faris said, “I kind of took my foot off the gas and I spent a lot of time with my son. It felt really good…It wasn’t conscious, but sort of a sabbatical, I guess…It felt great.” During her apparently much-needed time off, Faris couldn’t help but still have some ideas gestate in her head. “And now, what also feels great is that all of the projects and the characters that I’ve been sort of subconsciously kicking around, feel like they’re slowly kind of starting to sprout…And I feel really proactive,...

This! Is! Oversharing! Full disclosure, folks — this week's Empire Podcast features the return of one of our favourite interviewees, Gerry 'Gerard' Butler, as he and his Plane co-star Mike Colter sit down on Zoom with our Chris Hewitt. And while it's as fun and giggle-tactic as any of Butler's appearances on the pod, we should warn you that a lot of it revolves around a story that Chris shares with the duo right at the beginning. And that story is a load of old poop. You have been warned.
Elsewhere, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for another fun and frank exchange of film-related views, in which they bang on about the books and games they'd love to see turned into films, discuss (most of) the week's movie news (this was recorded before the BAFTA nominations were announced), and review The Estate, Alice, Darling,...

"Do you have any idea how draining it is to be around you all the time?!" Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for The Honeymoon, a romantic comedy from filmmaker Dean Craig, who also made this year's The Estate. Arriving in theaters and on VOD in just a few weeks. Adam and his bride, Sarah are about to embark on the romantic honeymoon of a lifetime in Venice. But when the trip is gatecrashed by Adam's best friend, Ed, it inadvertently turns their perfect lovers' holiday into a complete disaster. They end up on the run after a strange cross border drug-dealing mission goes awry. Can they turn this honeymoon around? The comedy stars Maria Bakalova, Asim Chaudhry, Pico Alexander, Marco Valerio Montesano, Michele Enrico Montesano, and Lucas Bravo. As expected, this looks incredibly stupid. Over-the-top performances, a cheesy crime plot, not a single joke that will make anyone laugh.

As one of the most virtuosic and respected actresses in Hollywood, Toni Collette has earned the right to speak her mind. From her iconic comedic debut in “Muriel’s Wedding” to her Oscar-nominated turn in “The Sixth Sense” to her hair-raising performance in “Hereditary,” it’s clear she knows how to navigate show business. And while she recognizes that many people and situations may require intimacy coordinators, she prefers to work unencumbered.
“I have to say, in a couple of scenes and different various jobs, I have been offered an intimacy coordinator,” Collette said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “But I have felt so connected and safe with my creative partners that the intimacy coordinator felt like they were encroaching upon the process, and I’ve denied them access to the actual scene because I didn’t feel like I needed them.”

‘The Estate’ Review: Toni Collette And Anna Faris Scheme In Outrageously Tasteless (But Funny) Farce
You may hate yourself in the morning, but if you are in the mood for a completely un-pc, morbidly amusing farce about the need for greed, the new comedy The Estate may be right up your alley.
Quite frankly if you know the work of its writer/director Dean Craig, the British filmmaker best known for both English and American remake versions of the over-the-top farce Death At A Funeral, as well as his directing debut Love Wedding Repeat, you will know what you are in for. Subtle comic wit and three dimensional human beings are not his specialty. Neither is restraint. The Estate, shot in New Orleans, will not disappoint, and in fact his penchant for completely politically incorrect situations and comedy is – so sue me – something of a tonic in the increasingly woke obsessed world in which we find ourselves. It has, as the ad line for the...

The sweet animated opening credits sequence of Dean Craig’s “The Estate” introduces two nice sisters who run a café. It’s a classic misdirect: a warm overview of sweet, caring Macey and sharp, smart Savanna under the guidance of their father, running a neighborhood joint replete with hot coffee and cozy regulars. Once the credits fade to real life, as it were, we learn that the sisters are in over their head and way behind on their payments, with no feasible financial solution in sight.
The Macey and Savanna of the cartoon prologue do not resemble the Macey and Savanna of “The Estate.” Macey (Toni Collette) is vaguely empathetic but weak-willed. Savanna (Anna Faris) is impulsive and possibly a sociopath. In order to save their precious café, one the audience never actually sees them working in, they’re going to have to butter up their dying, miserable Aunt Hildy...

We all make mistakes, even Toni Collette. Fans of the fearless and versatile Australian actress can take solace that she isn’t alone on this one; a whole host of beloved talented people cast their lot with the same sinking ship that is the cringe comedy “The Estate.” in her final days. The most consistent comedic thread in “The Estate” involves a pushily flirtatious cousin, and it’s not nearly as fun as “House of the Dragon” made it look.
In an odd couple pairing, Collette and Anna Faris play sisters Macey and Savanna, who are struggling to keep their family business afloat. When they learn that their wealthy and childless Aunt Hilda (Kathleen Turner) has taken a turn for the worse, scheming Savanna suggests they ingratiate themselves to her in the hopes of securing their inheritance. Though kindhearted Macey has reservations at first, the threat of losing her first...

If, as the old actor’s maxim goes, dying is easy while comedy is hard, comedy about dying is the most high-wire act of all. Get the balance right and it’s intensely, savagely funny; when it doesn’t land, it’s a bit icky for all concerned. In 2007, British screenwriter Dean Craig mostly pulled off the trick with the self-explanatorily titled “Death at a Funeral,” which was broad and crass but frequently very funny indeed — sufficiently so for Craig to pen an inferior U.S. remake three years later. Now directing as well as writing, he attempts a similar coup with frantic coffin-chasing farce “The Estate,” getting ahead of the game by setting it in the States to begin with. This time, the results fall largely flat.
On the face of it, it’s hard to see why. The premise — hard-up chancers attempt to scrap and claw their way...

"We need to keep an eye on Beatriz and Dick." Signature Ent. has debuted another new official trailer for a comedy titled The Estate, this one a vulgar red band trailer - only given this rating for its foul language (this is packed with F bombs galore). The first trailer for this dropped a month ago. Two sisters attempt to win over their terminally ill, very-difficult-to-please Aunt in hopes of ending up with her wealthy estate, only to find the rest of their greedy family members have the same idea. Sounds a bit like Knives Out, but with a family trying to one-up each other and no murder mystery. The film's impressive cast features Toni Collette, with Anna Faris, David Duchovny, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, and Kathleen Turner. It looks much better when they're letting loose with all the cursing. Finally something to laugh at. ›››
