The flash mob dance
jotix1006 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Manny's birthday is going to be celebrated at a fancy restaurant. The three families are doing everything they can to make the occasion a happy one, but before the actual dinner takes place, each family has to deal with different issues.

The most important situation is happening at the birthday boy's home. Gloria, who is viewed by her husband Jay as a little irresponsible, has lost her keys. She goes frantic trying to locate them, but she never seems to realize where she put them, in the first place. Jay is the key to solving the problem. The keys have always been in his jacket pocket, but he does not own to having them. Only Manny knows the real reason, but he will not tell his mother what really happened. For a gift, Jay has thought of getting an inappropriate gift for the boy: a BB gun!

Cameron and Mitchell's gift take a different route. At the mall, Cam, ever the helpful individual he is, goes to help an elderly man find his wife. He goes after the wrong woman, dragging her on escalators, only to find his error. Mitch has surprised for Cam. Unknown to his partner, Mitch has rehearsed to participate in a 'flash mob' dance, so popular in shopping malls. Cam is clearly impressed.

The situation with the Dunphys has to do with Phil's driving. Luke seems to be scared to be in his father's car. Haley and Alex has no desire to go to Family Camp. Both feel they have outgrown that phase of their young lives. Clair and Luke take her car, being so competitive, Claire tries to outsmart Phil.

Michael Spiller directed this chapter of the sitcom. Written by Ilana Wernick and Elaine Ko, the episode keeps moving at a rapid pace. The 'flash mob' section of the program at the mall was an amazing happening. This phenomenon seen in Youtube and other online sites is amazing for the most part, as surprised shoppers stop dead on their tracks to enjoy the impromptu celebration that no one realized must have taken a lot of rehearsal time to make it work.

Near perfect episode about nothing.

I don't care what the point of plot is/was.

This was just fun.

What a great episode example of how enjoyable this show is or can be. It's why the show became so popular...just so enjoyable to watch.

Claire, Luke, Phil...just fun.

Cam and Mitch...funny.

Manny was funny when he was just a really old man boy. I wish they would have kept that spirit of the character alive instead of ruining the character. Jay was good too.

Haley and Alex were the weakest part...and they were still fine.

I have no complaints about this episode.

Great ideas executed excellently. I wish all Modern Family's were like this for the long haul.

Not sure what went wrong when...but it went from this greatness to unwatchable in later seasons.

Love episodes like this!

Warning: Spoilers
I love these simple story episodes that have so much going on underneath. I relate so much to Claire in this episode as I'm the "un-fun" parent. Her scenes in the car with Luke are lovely. Gloria losing her keys and Jay trying to hide the fact that he found them in his pocket is just good fun. Again, a simple story. Manny lamenting over his lost childhood is adorable, especially when he makes a prank call.

Mitchell being involved in the flash mob is so sweet! Plus, I always enjoy dancing Mich, it just makes me smile. Cam being his usual self-absorbed and selfish self gets mad at Mitch for dancing without him? I just rolled my eyes.

I recently saw someone complain about the inapproriateness of Phil's t-shirt in the flashback. I'm not sure they actually WATCHED the episode and realised that was the joke! It was inappropriate and he was completely clueless! Some humour is lost on some people.

Brilliant, well paced episode with lots of laughs.

Goofs

When Cam is holding the old lady while going down the escalator, you can clearly see that he's holding a mannequin. Once they get to the bottom, he places heron the floor only to show the "real" lady. This isn't a review, but a goof. Couldn't find an area for goofs. This was a classical modern family episode where it was put together nicely. Absolutely love this show. It's a shame that it had to come to an end. My favorites would be the first 6 seasons. Can someone respond on how to post goofs? We're such big fans and we always see slip ups, but I can't find an area to post. This entry can serve as a goof and review.
