Went off the deep end. Had a promising start
mmiceli092419 November 2022
So disappointed. I waited week after week for the newest episode, and the creators decided to throw every trope up in the air.

Not one character is worth liking except for the daughter. Everyone is a monster...and when, you might feel some empathy, it is torn away by these characters reactions.

Ugh...it was 1- centric. No one was 3 dimensional.

The first two episodes were really engaging. This basically tried to show family problems with a frigged up family, but, all I was hoping for, was the missing person to come back, because these relatives were lethal. Seriously, a NOT watch.

A mom of two kids goes swimming. She doesn't return. Other siblings are called. This had potential but veered down a one way of boredom after episode 2.

Wish I liked the characters
lbeaudry-1625716 March 2024
This series started out promising/intriguing, but the more you get to know the characters, the more offputting and unlikable most of them are. The teenagers annoyed me, and the adults are all ridiculously self-centered and more or less worthless. It seemed to be well acted, but there wasn't much redemptive in any of the characters.

I tried to enjoy it, but it just kept letting me down over and over again. And that single sister was just despicable. The gay couple was also rather offensive. Why would anyone want them to be the parents of the two teenagers? They kept taking drugs and having sex with everyone. Not a great example, nor good role models.

I was prepared to like this, but...
cumichaelis23 October 2022
After the first episode my interest faltered but I thought I'd give it another try. However, after episide two, this straggle of annoying, dysfunctional characters, none of whom is even remotely likeable or relatable, makes this too painful to continue watching. I find the acting clumsy and the flashbacks are too short to provide insights into the history of family relationships. It may well be that there are lots of families like this, burdened by feuds, animosity and lack of genuine affection. But in this show, watching them deal with the issue of a missing family member is, I just can't make myself care about any of them. They all seem too self centred and fake to elicit sympathy or even interest.

Did this series hire a new writer after the second episode?
Dunnarunna28 November 2022
The first two episodes had me intrigued. It was a good solid story of a missing woman, presumably drowned. A dysfunctional family come together to try to find their missing mother/sister.

Episode 3 was watched with great anticipation. Did she drown? Will the family resolve their differences under this cloud? But the episode was a total disappointment. The acting was clunky. The storyline seemed disjointed and confused. And why chuck in a random sex act? Did it add value? I think not.

Much discussion was had in our household. Should we persevere with this series? We decided to give it one more go. Perhaps episode 3 was a slump and it would pick back up in ep 4. Wrong! We bailed about halfway through it and have decided to ditch this series. Episode was as slow as a wet week, and seemed to be filmed in real time. The ep added nothing to the story and seemed to have forgotten that the series is about the missing family member.

Did she drown or was there foul play? I'll never know...

An intriguing view of an Australian family
dwrp-9043331 October 2022
First off I've only seen the 3 episodes that have dropped and I can safely say I don't think I've seen an inner city Australian family portrayed with such naturalness and fragility . No performances are overplayed , none of the interiors are overblown and the general cinema verite style is intimate and awkward.

The two young leads performances are really impressive, as are the two older sisters and Todd shows off acting skills rarely seen from Him before .

I appreciate the somber and deeply saturated colours of the show don't reflect the coastal NSW we are used to, but I'm intrigued and keen to see where all this goes .

Could be retitled Significant Looks

Warning: Spoilers
I gave this anti-thriller three episodes before calling it quits, even though a murder or euthanisation was at last revealed, which should have sparked my interest. Too many characters spend too much time mooning about aimlessly -- always a bad sign. After the third episode finished my wife called her sister and they agreed that the show was too slow-moving and they just didn't care about the characters. Because it is so drawn out it is hard to keep all the subplots in the air. From the other reviews here and elsewhere, it is clear that this story is very polarising. People either love it or dislike it; I'm one of the latter. All the actors are trying hard to make it work but they are fighting against a minimalist script and glacial direction.

A must watch
rossnye20 November 2022
I really loved this series. It really pulls are your heart strings. I cried at least once every episode. Anyone with half a heart should watch it.

All the cast did an absolutely brilliant job, with the two kids (3 actually) and Todd giving stand out performances. I've always found Todd to be funny, but in this role, which was far from comical, I really think it was made for him and he played it flawlessly.

The production values were really great too and it's obvious that everyone involved put their heat and soul into making what was a really great show dealing with emotional topics.

I highly recommend this series.

Goodbye after episode 4
chris-3742912 November 2022
I was somewhat intrigued by where this story was going and was prepared for it to develop. The first three episodes were a little disjointed but there was enough there to warrant seeing how the Therese were going to be tied together. However episode 4 was a complete waste of time. There was nothing in this episode that made any sense. It just meandered through a whole lot of scenes that had no connection to anything we'd seen before. There was no intrigue unless you consider no story development at all as intrigue. There was nothing in it that made me want to sit through another meandering hour. I'm sure the writers will do something with it in the remaining episodes but I won't be there to find out.

What can I say about this
vikingtales1 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What can I say about this, Aussie Series, Significant Others.

It started with a decent enough premise, a mother and estranged sister goes missing while out swimming while her daughter looks on...and to be honest the first episode is ok, it kind of makes you want to know what has happened to her, did she drown or !!!

But by episode 2 it was evident how this series was going to play out, the family all come together after not seeing each other for years it would appear, but then there is the wokeness which sneaks in when you're not looking, and random sex acts, which it seems to me are only really there to bolster a dull and flagging story line, to keep the viewer watching, by the end of Episode 3 I'd had enough, and didn't really care anymore if the woman had drowned or just saw where the story was going and left the cast before the end credits.

Could have been so much better, but 'lack luster' is the phrase of this series I'm afraid to say.

Tedious
guyau-399-6837227 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This had a promising start as a potential mystery drama with the sister's disappearance, a feud over inheritance and a dysfunctional family who all seemed capable of murder but, no, this is simply a drawnout drama of guilt, grief, regret and unlikeable characters that goes nowhere. This series needed severe editing, starting with much of the dialogue and acting seemingly improvised on set, but big chunks like the Mardi Gras episode did nothing but drag this series out and should have been cut altogether. Even the casting was bad with what looked like 30 year olds playing children. I confess, my wife wanted to watch it so I was dragged along for the ride, which might explain my churlishness, but she also tired of it. Five stars from her, one from me.

Family scapegoating behaviour patterns
umchinagirard22 October 2022
Dysfunctional family relationships. Siblings are divided and alienated from each other... nephew and nieces alienation and isolated children and no real connections or unconditional love. Sibling abuse behaviour and bullying towards one sibling and family relationships are tedious and torturous.the sisters are manipulative and emotionally vulnerable. People in denial or dysfunctional or alcoholics or hierarchical family systems or narcissistic parent or narcissistic care givers or no way to write teenagers script good attempt to articulate their behaviour and experience of their families dysfunction.

Not about a murder, more about political correctness.
Rupert1717 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Several other contributors have expressed my views on this advertisement for inclusion and diversity. The apparent murder of a woman central to the lives of many takes a back seat it to the failures of those connected to her.

The episode where the Sydney Gay MardiGras dominates the entire story is one of the worst I've ever seen in a TV series. It was purely pushing the Gay culture and confirming the ABC's commendable commitment to diversity in a context where truth and resolution relating to the woman's death should have been the narrative goal.

Diversity and inclusiveness are necessary components of life, but they need to be portrayed as part of life, not the only dominant factors in human existence. This program tried so hard to embrace all diversity issues that it became overloaded with characters and scenes that seemed unnecessary to me.

I've lost interest in ABC drama. Their comedies are still excellent entertainment - they send up rather than preach.

Don't waste your time
M0vieL0ver8 March 2024
I have never watched a show hit rock bottom so fast and so hard. The initial premise was good and intriguing, then very quickly the show turned into a joke and became unwatchable. Another embarrassing production with zero depth or vision and no real storyline. The script was awful. All of the substories or subplots were plugins that did nothing to tie the show all together. Do the actors really enjoy this nonsense? Do they enjoy playing cartoon characters in someone else's head? Goofy and unintelligent. Like I said, no depth, no insight. No story. A disjointed mess. Will they learn from this? No. Because they do not know how to.
