In 1998, Italian cyclist Marco Pantani won both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, the two most prestigious and arguably difficult events in road cycling, a feat that hasn’t been equalled since. As with almost every success story to come out of road cycling in the last few decades, Pantani’s career was marred by accusations of doping and drug abuse. No stranger to sport documentaries, director James Erskine (One Night in Turin, Battle of the Sexes) turns his gaze on a sport whose reputation is still reeling from years of doping scandals. In Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist, Erskine pieces together the life of one of the era’s most revered figures and the events leading up to his untimely death in 2004.
Regarded as one of his generation’s best climbers, Pantani’s aggressive riding style and imposing image led to him becoming an immensely popular rider.

Queen of Tennis and equality advocate Billie Jean King will be the subject of the next film in PBS's "American Masters" series. The documentary, directed by James Erskine ("One Night in Turin," "The Battle of the Sexes"), profiles King's experience growing up as a girl on the tennis courts where she witnessed sexism and inequality. As she rose to tennis stardom, she made it her mission to play for equality for women in sports. The documentary will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the famous Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs match, which became known as the Battle of the Sexes, and her founding of the Women's Tennis Association. King presents her own story, with perspectives from Rosie Casals, Chris Evert, Venus Williams, Gloria Steinem, Sir Elton John, Bobby Riggs’ son Larry, and others. The film will premiere September 10 on PBS, making the first time "American Masters" has profiled a sports figure.

To mark the release of The Sexes on DVD July 8th, we’ve got 5 copies of the tennis documentary to give away. The film chronicles the birth of women’s professional tennis and features interviews with Billie Jean King, Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Larry Riggs, Virginia Wade, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki. The film is directed by James Erskine and Zara Hayes.
The film, from Victoria Gregory, the co-producer of Man on Wire and James Erskine, director of One Night in Turin and From the Ashes, centers around the 1973 match between the-then-Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King and the former men’s champion, and self-proclaimed “male chauvinist pig” Bobby Riggs. The gripping match became the most watched tennis match in the history of the game.

Finally, British filmmakers are understanding just what it takes to make fine and meaningful sporting documentaries of the nation’s two favourite sports (sorry Rugby) as James Erskine follows-up his excellent One Night In Turin documentary (the definite account of England’s 1990 World Cup) with From The Ashes – the re-telling of the England vs. Australia 1981 clash where Ian Botham became a hero.
Owf have been granted an exclusive sneak peak at the documentary below and once again Erskine looks to have blended the sporting drama with footage that contextualises the story into it’s political and social background. This is where Erskine’s docs really excel. It’s not just about what happened on the field but it’s what it meant to the fans, scratch that, the whole British nation as a whole who took to these sporting icons during some rocky times. The tagline tells you all you need to know…...

If you haven’t heard of Hawk, you shouldn’t feel bad. Googling it doesn’t bring much up about the project, or its director, Mj McMahon. It is a 38-minute fantasy epic loosely based on Welsh folklore and tells the tale of a boy named Rowen, who is taken away from the civilized world, where his lessons in the wild begin. Yet when he shatters the balance of nature, Rowan discovers another world beneath our own. In that shadowy land of old gods and wild hunts, the divide between man and beast becomes uncertain and the fairy tales of childhood spring to life. With only the guidance of a hunting hawk, Rowan must make amends for his crime, and choose between what is real, and what is not.

'The World Cup's here. I'm feeling irrelevant'
This is a tricky month for film reviewers. The medium on which our livelihood depends, usually so dominant and super-sexy, is now upstaged by the World Cup. Generally, a World Cup-themed film does get released. This year it was the Italia 90 documentary One Night in Turin; in 2006 it was Sixty-Six, about a boy's coming of age in the year of Bobby Moore. But reviewing these films just reminds everyone how irrelevant you are. We need to work now on a glut of World Cup-related films to be released during Brazil 2014, so critics can participate more fully in football fever. What about:
Jewel (dir Stephen Frears) Set in Bogotá, Colombia, during the 1970 World Cup, the action spans the four days Bobby Moore was under arrest on the trumped-up charge of stealing a bracelet from a jewellery shop. This awful experience strengthens his marriage: cue...

Nothing like a stuttering draw to remind everyone of England’s place in the footballing world, eh? It should be pointed out, as many already have, that England are notoriously slow starters in the World Cup, having won their opening game 5 out of the 13 times they have reached the Finals. The last time they drew their opening match, however, was against Ireland in 1990. And we all know how that one ended. But you’ve probably never seen it like this before. One Night in Turin, James Erskine’s film, narrated by Gary Oldman, is a fly on the wall account of England’s journey at Italia ’90, their best showing at a World Cup since 1966. ITV will show the film on July 4, the day after the World Cup quarterfinals, which also marks 20 years since the semi final against Germany. If you can’t wait until then here is the trailer. While...

How to follow up one of the best albums of last year? Rather than release another cryptically titled psychedelic odyssey, New York uber-hipsters Animal Collective have gone even further out and made a film. Well, actually it's a "visual album", made with long-time artist collaborator Danny Perez. Four years in the making, featuring completely new music, Oddsac is a narrative-free, head-spinning vortex of abstract kaleidoscopic trippiness that, as one fan puts it, "makes Matthew Barney look like Matthew McConaughey". Confused? Perez and the band will be on hand to explain themselves.

Four Lions (15)
(Chris Morris, 2010, UK) Riz Ahmed, Kayvan Novak, Nigel Lindsay, Arsher Ali. 102 mins
Still grasping the nettles others would rather strim over, Morris returns with a suicide-bomb-com that both makes you laugh, and makes you wonder if you should be laughing. Tracking an inept Sheffield terrorist cell with big plans, it's packed with priceless lines and inspired absurdity in an Ealing comedy-meets-In The Loop sort of way. But we're not let off that lightly. These are more than simple caricatures, and as their mission becomes increasingly real, in every sense, we laugh at our peril.
The Back-Up Plan (12A)
(Alan Poul, 2010, Us) Jennifer Lopez, Alex O'Loughlin. 104 mins
J-Lo returns to reclaim her title as lightweight romcom champion, with another surreally dumb relationship souffle that should have Jennifer Aniston quaking in her fluffy slippers.
