Welcome Back!
zacpetch5 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The first episode of the sixth season and Futurama is back with a bang! Picking up the cliffhanger ending of the fifth season finale "Into The Wild Green Yonder Part Four", this episode begins with the crews of the Planet Express and The Nimbus crash-land and die. Now THAT'S how to bring back a show.

It turns out that Professor Farnsworth survived the crash and he manages to resurrect the others but Leela is a 'stillbirth' and Bender has to keep partying or else he'll destroy the universe. Both of these are changes that only last for this episode and will prove important to the story. Basically, Fry mourns his dead now-girlfriend and creates a robotic duplicate of her only for the real Leela to wake up at her funeral and treat us to some brilliant moments with two Leelas competing for Fry. This premise is magnificent and it does not disappoint.

The ending is confusing when Fry turns out to be a robot too and we end up with two Frys. "I'm sorry, I didn't realise I was already here" is his beautifully absurd response. We've seen Fry interact with himself before in season five's "Bender's Big Score" but this doesn't feel like it's retreading old ground and finds a fresh perspective on the idea. You have to pay attention to the plot here -- it may take repeat viewing to understand what happened -- but it's a great payoff to the episode's absurdity and what everyone did is all perfectly in character.

This episode isn't quite up to the standard of the first four seasons or the better bits of the fifth season but it's still pure Futurama and a great re-return for the show. I guess the writers just said to themselves "Let's create the most absurd story possible" because that's what they did. If only Bender could have kept his requirement to party non-stop for just a few further episodes... that would be funny and could have lead to some wonderful background gags as you can see him dancing away in the background. Still, you can't have everything and the episode we get here finds a way to resolve his predicament in a manner that gives the episode an excellent conclusion.

A welcome return
Tweekums1 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Having been cancelled then brought back in the form of four straight-to-DVD movies 'Futurama' returns in its original form… just broadcast of a different channel. If it wasn't for a gag in the opening scenes viewers watching on DVD or outside the US probably wouldn't notice the change.

The story is told in flashback as the Professor tells Fry how they had all been involved in a serious accident which has destroyed everybody's bodies. Luckily he was able to revive most of them using human stem cells. Unfortunately Leela couldn't be revived and remained in a coma. Unable to cope with the loss Fry built a robo-Leela into which her personality and appearance are downloaded. The copy is so good that it believes itself to be the real Leela until an injury reveals wires not blood. At the funeral of the real Leela she wakes from her coma and Fry has two Leelas competing for him. Eventually they each challenge him to shoot the other; he refuses but accidentally shoots himself leading to a shocking revelation. While all this is going on Bender can't stop dancing as the Professor used a doomsday machine as a power source to revive him after the accident and if he doesn't burn off the excess energy he will explode.

The original four seasons were a lot of fun but the films, which were okay, showed that 'Futurama' is best suited to the twenty two minute format. Apart from a quick gag early on one would never know this wasn't part of the original run. The story was well told with plenty of laughs and a twist that I hadn't seen coming. It was great seeing the real Leela waking at her own funeral and competing with her robotic double and the twist didn't seem forced. The gag about Bender having to keep dancing was comparatively weak but didn't detract from the episode and was ultimately resolved in a good way. Overall a pretty good episode that marked a welcome return for this series.

Twisted and funny story, touching love, good 2.5D visuals and intriguing ending but not so creative, no franchise reboot and anticipated episodic format of the bionic pizza
igoatabase25 June 2010
I only watched a few episodes of the first two seasons but always considered Futurama one of the best cartoons on TV. However I never became one of its followers as I'm not into episodic shows. Some missions of the week were good but others were disappointing. So when I read that season 6 was about to air I thought it would be the perfect occasion to reboot the franchise and provide its long time fans with a fresh and original production.

Rebirth didn't meet my expectations but it should succeed in entertaining the audience. Indeed some situations were quite hilarious. I didn't dig the whole Bender delirium but most of the jokes were funny. However I found some cultural references a bit lazy, at least two films. I couldn't help comparing it to Space Pilot 3000, that I rated 10 out of 10, and they didn't play in the same creative league. Otherwise the characters spirit hasn't aged and I instantly fell in love again with Leela & Fry. I found some scenes touching and even if their relationship is not as super as Lois & Clark I think it has potential and I hope it'll be further developed in the upcoming episodes.

As for the story it wasn't mind blowing but twisted enough so you should definitely be surprised. Visually it's still a miss of traditional 2D animation and 3D cel-shaded CG. However I think they could have upgraded their vision and made it a bit more modern. Some backgrounds were specially tasteless but overall I think the production quality is good. Last but not least it ended with a cliffhanger and even if I don't expect Futurama to switch to a heavy format, with one story for the whole season, it should intrigue you enough to at least watch the next episode, In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela. So it wasn't a two parts pilot but I think Rebirth deserves your attention. But don't expect Futurama to reinvent itself ! It's really like if the show had never been canceled.

The One Where Everyone Is Reborn...

Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. I think it was a good Season Premiere and is one of my favorite episodes. It's such an inventive idea. It's truly a great watch.

In this episode, a devastated Fry longs for Leela, after she falls into an irreversible coma. Professor Farnsworth decides to make a fake Leela for Fry, so he won't be sad anymore. I'm honestly not sure whether he actually knows it's not really Leela, or if he does think it's her. Anyway, the real Leela eventually wakes up from her coma and stuff gets crazy.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.
